Like always, I enjoy your videos but still don't like your forced criticism. It feels like being there just for the sake of criticism instead of parts that you genuinely don't like about a film (and there are too many aspects for someome who loves movies). Also, some words feel unnecessarily complicated and pretentious. Which can be fine for some people but I doubt that any normal person on KZread would want to watch these kind of reviews.

The type of films I watched as a 14 year old were a lot of 80s coming of age films and Perks of Being a Wallflower, they still hold a sense of nostalgia for me and formed my music taste that is still my music taste today, basically a lot of Bowie and Cocteau Twins

Perks was great at that age. Same with Pump Up the Volume, The Girl Next Door, The Breakfast Club, etc. It's hard for me to watch Perks now, bc I don't get the same feeling I used to. But I still love all those movies. Stuck In Love is another great one. I recommend it if you haven't seen it. It's got Logan Lerman too and it introduced me to Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith. I watched it recently and I still love it so much. Same with Begin Again with Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. And Reality Bites with Ethan Hawke and Winona Ryder.

I definitely relate to forming my favorite movies as a teenager and not really out growing them. For example I saw Heathers when I was 14 and decided it was my favorite movie. I’m 26 now and I’ll still tell people that it’s my favorite movie. I even have a tattoo in it’s honor. However I know for a fact there are many other films that have come out since 1989 that I have watched over the last 10 years that I love just as much, if not more. That being said I think a reason Heathers has remained my favorite film is because it aligns with my personal aesthetics and sensibilities in a way that lets people know right off the bat who I am in regards to media.

Also all of these films were in my top films as a teen as well. Luckily Eternal Sunshine brought me to other Kaufman and Gondry films specifically Being John Malkovich and The Science of Sleep. All of the films you mentioned are good jumping off points if the average teen watching them uses the film as a jumping off point. As always great video! Crazy to think when I started watching your channel you were graduating high school and now you have graduated college! Congratulations!

I am 41 and recently I have started looking back at movies my friend group thought were super cool as teens/early 20-somethings. I definitely look at them more critically and some of the stylistic techniques that seemed so edgy to me back then often feel more like cheap tricks to me now. I watched A Clockwork Orange for the first time as an 18 year old…that was a couple years ago, now. The point is, seeing it as an adult for the first time, the movie didn’t resonate on a “can they do that?” way. I wouldn’t say I love the movie, but I respect it as an anti violence piece. The biggest legacy of it for me is that I love the movie “Singing in the Rain” and yet I can not hear the titular song without being horrified

my standard pre-teen/teenage film education experience involved staying up late to surf the movie channels (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz) at my uncle's on the weekends because he had Primestar aka DirecTV. This is where I first saw Pulp Fiction, Fear & Loathing, Big Lebowski, City of God, all before I was 14-15 years old, which eventually lead to me renting more obscure films at the video store my friends would tell me about or that I would see mentioned in other shows or movies via pop culture references. Once I got broadband at like 18 years old that's when I really started to dive into CINEMA and tracked down legendary films via AFI's 100 Greatest and various LiveJournal posts.

I want to say I was a cinephile my whole life. Born in 1985, I remember just watching whatever I could watch. My earliest film memory was the ending of Empire Strikes Back, I became obsessed with RoboCop by the time I was three, and I just kept devouring. We used to have a black box as I got older so I would watch whatever would come on. I probably watched Casino dozens of times on repeat when I was ten, second only to Gods and Monsters when that was on PPV. Jerry Maguire was my first R rating film in theaters, by myself (I was in the fifth grade and my dad just dropped me off while they did Christmas shopping). By the time I was around 14 or so, I was starting to get into Wes Anderson and comic book films were about to really take off, with Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and the Prequels about to go. Now I'm 36 going on 37 and while filmmaking techniques have vastly improved, it's very rare to find anything as good as the pre-MCU days. Not to take a shot at them, because I'm more of a Paul Thomas Anderson guy who enjoys all kinds of cinema, but outside of A24, cinematic standards have fallen with alternative cinema to what Fiege and what Marvel has done. But that's fine, because there's still a lot of films out there to find and we're living in a golden age of technology where those films are easily accessible.

This video hits the nail in the head about this very topic, especially the “Growing out of Tarantino” piece, I’m one to have done that myself, especially given released details about his strange personal life, as well as seeing interviews with him, very arrogant. Not a great role model for interviews. You on the other hand, are respectable and well put together. Funnily enough, your videos would be great to teach someone how to present themselves in an interview, the exact opposite of Tarantino’s demeanor. Saw Scott Pilgrim (on tv) when I was 11 and loved it, 20 today and still love it. Besides the weak third act and the ton of story it skips in favor of being a movie, it's a pretty damn fun one and I still love it

I know you disagree with a lot of a Kubrick conspiracies but I think the Bear symbolism in The Shining is absolutely real, I can’t see a scenario where all the beat stuff & the ball rolling into the room when Danny goes there while Jack uses that same ball later to throw against a wall & the magazine Jack reads that has a section labeled “incest, why parents sleep with their children” is all just coincidence

the original author, Anthony Burgess, wrote a clockwork orange as an indictment of the belief that it was better to be conditioned to be good than to choose to be bad-take Walden 2 by B.F Skinner. I haven’t watched the movie, but it’s pretty clearly outlined when Ludovico’s Technique is discussed, and someone brings up the fact that Alex doesn’t want to act morally out of duty, or out of desire to do good or love for the world-he hasn’t learned anything. He acts in accordance with duty, but only out of fear and self-interest. So while I take your point, and I don’t necessarily agree with the fervency Burgess outlines his point, Alex is the ultimate symbol of free will. (also, i think it’s interested to add that Burgess hated Kubrick’s adaptation because it cut out the last chapter of the novel, leaving it with a much more cynical feel)

i think it speaks about the film education in the united states more than your film education. You have to want to get out of the "amercian films doctrine" to actually watch something from a different country. Something like european cinema, or latinoamercian cinema or even african cinema, they different perspectives of life.

I see many comments about how they’re ashamed of still likening these movies now and i feel like they completely missed the point he’s making lol. Rewatch the movies you loved when you were younger and see how you perceive them now given your life experiences and everything that has passed. It’s okay to just outgrow things and feel uncomfortable by how you don’t love something as much as you once did, change is part of growing up!

I’m not feeling those criticisms on Eternal Sunshine - though I love some properly flawed films and enjoy them despite their shortcomings: Be Kind Rewind, He Died With A Felafel In His Hand, The Illustrated Family Doctor. I don’t think Burnham is a creep, even as I’ve grown closer to his age. The symbolism is a bit heavy handed but that’s not a fault. This film embodies the feel of 1999. Rather than tail off, it’s grown in statue for me. Too video though 👍

Looking back on it now, I was either obsessed with Bette Davis or desperately wanted to be a drunk homicidal washed up actress. Im now a middle aged gay man who lives in La Jolla, so I guess nothing has really changed.
