I never realised how similar the two are. It's interesting how they both use children as a symbol of innocence for their most powerful scenes. For The Last of Us, it's that opening scene. The loss of innocence and by extension, anything to fight for. For Children of Men, it's the ending. We're in a war zone, watching soldiers tear the world apart. But for one moment, the soldiers hear the cries of the first baby born in 18 years, and we see what that symbol of innocence can do to vicious, blood thirsty soldiers. They stop fighting, in awe of the purity of it. For me these two scenes are hands down some of the most emotionally impactful scenes put to their respective mediums.

after all the inhumanity and cruelty we see throughout Children of Men, that moment where everyone stops fighting over the cries of the baby is just... really something. what an incredible film! I remember watching it back when and just being blown away.

Why call soldiers viscous and blood thirsty, how blind a statement. There isn't a soldier on a battle field that doesn't want tj be somewhere else! Soldiers fight because they are told to, by officials voted in by people, like you. 99.999 percent of soldiers join for a place to live, schooling, and to remove burdens from a household, not to kill. Then some political figure voted in by the people decide the have to go fight and kill, or be killed, because you know , whatever the "right" thing to do their TV tells them. Soldiers are just boys and girls taking the only way to a future they have, most are vert very poor, the poorest people of a nation's children, its always the people who scream for blood. Right now is a great time for making that example. How many billions of dollars and weapons are being sent to wars by the US government, with the people screaming it's what is right, those are weapons being used on people, no matter what people you like or dislike, more death is possible due to those weapons and money. People scream for death, be ause it's "right" , now , in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, on and on, the soldoer is just the tool, that dies even if he lives, that person is now broken forever, win or lose, he or she did the "right" everyone wanted, with weapons paid for by you or me, so who is blood thirsty? Those soldiers are only doing it because they were told they had to, and even stopping for that moment may cost them their lives for not following orders, tge orders given by the political figures put in place by tge votes of those who will later call them names for doing what they wanted them to.

@@Xterminate13Men have an insitint to protect there homes and futures. Never forget, they are just tools sent to do battle , kill, or die, by the people. The sane people who will call them monsters later, not one man or woman on a killing field wouldn't go home if offered the chance. The second a solider kills or watches a friend die, they die to, ptsd is real, but they are there in your stead, protecting you, your home, your future. It makes me crazy when soldiers are called blood thirsty , to many movies, soldiers are afraid, want to go home, and can't. Respect the people you send to die or kill for you, they are mostly lower class kids thay joined for a home and education, not to kill, then the people scream for war and they go.

@@suzygirl1843 The Korean movie? No. I haven’t been a regular cinema goer for quite some time because of too many movies after Children of Men that had no wow. 😁 I’m not talking visual wow, ala when Marvel was actually good and fun for a minute, but the kind of wow where a movie takes you by surprise. You can’t even remotely predict what someone is going to say or do and or what may happen. Love that. So many movies stick to such repetitive formulas, you’re always way ahead of the movie and it’s incredibly boring. I might go to a theater for a purely visual aesthetic but the quality of the image at the theater these days vs. on my decent TV at home is so much less, the bigger size doesn’t help. Then of course there’s the cost. The last movie that may have had the chance to make me go wow was stopped, by malfunctioning HVAC in the theater, that made us bail after 20 minutes. I regret I didn’t go back to try it again before it left the theater. Especially the black and white version. Godzilla Minus One.

I find it amusing that in a movie about a "cleaner" who's teaching a little girl how to "clean" after her whole family was "cleaned" by cops, it's the pseudo love story that bothers you. It's almost as if art doesn't have to be ethical, like Breaking Bad, The Godfather, The Silence Of The Lambs, John WIck, and of course video games and their violence.. Children of Men was one of my favourite films and thought it also reminded me of missions in MGS4 2008 when you can decide to kill everything and everyone or stealth your way through chaos by crawling, using octocamo and metal bins or cardboard boxes. The Last of Us is a great game and story that definitely has a lot of inspiration from that movie and think they made it unique enough to be one of the most powerful zombie stories of humanity overcoming or accepting the downfall of the world around them.

Beautiful video essay, love both of these stories, and I had not ever seen the interview with Neil, so I didn't know about that inspiration, but it's clear through your analysis that The Last of Us was much more than just inspired by it, it was also a deep homage to it with so many parallels in their cinematography and themes/writing, and that seemed to really help to ground and solidify Last's premise and delivery. And thank you for your honesty--I hope you make more videos, you have a good voice (in both written/vocal respects), solid editing, and illustrated a great idea that clearly had not occurred to a lot of people!! Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road was also a major inspiration.

Wow. That's one hell of an inspiration. No wonder the game was so absolutely good.

the theme of this song is just perfect for it, the dreadfulness of the tune, and the way the music is like a fading breath is just perfect.

Wow, I never made the connection, even though I loved the movie. This was a great video.

Niel Druckman also mentions "The Road" as an influence. You should read it. Cinematography wise, Children of Men might have influenced the game, but the soul of TLOU (part 1 only, not part 2) comes from The Road. Great video though, I will add this movie to my list.

That’s what I figured cause I can’t see the surrogate Father daughter connection… superficially I can see just “oh a dude pretty much going on an adventure to bring valuable cargo. And risking his life for it”. Maybe if Ellie was sacrificed to save man kind. And she was like an embryo lmao. Or in a bb pod. Or some crap. But last of us is about the connection that forms between them… not the delivery for humanity…

Now you can make a video about Léon: The Professional too,the relationship between Joel and Ellie is pretty much lifted from this movie

The scene in CoM where the soldiers stop fighting while the girl and her baby are evacuated out of the building is just gut wrenching. Sarah's death was the first time a video game made me cry.

Love how in Children of Men it's the Fishes, and in Last of Us it's the Fireflies. Watched this movie a couple months ago, and it is absolutely wild how similar everything is. Even one of the final scenes in the movie is something borrowed by Part 2.

What are some of the background music that you used for your video? They sound fantastic.

The first one is a melodic, perhaps piano, version of The Last Of Us theme music.

I never even knew the children of men was a flop. I remember watching it and was mind blowing and all my friends thought it was amazing when it came out so I just assumed it was a big hit. Seriously though, it is an amazing movie.
