I think we can’t relate to why the British “upper crust” was so emotionally distraught by the abdication of old Edward. Royalty was their “rock.” Edward leaving was like the father of their country abandoning the family. It hadn’t ever happened before. Yes Britain dodged a bullet with Edward abdicating but they didn’t know it then.

I can totally understand how a sensitive man like Dickie could be so distressed by the thought of David chucking the crown for an American divorcee that it could actually make him chuck his cookies. He probably saw no rhyme nor reason why David would turn his back on the crown, his country and his family for a silly woman.

Think how David affected the English public. The emotion had to be analogous to Diana dying suddenly. They feel it like their own family. They had such hope for this king. They had no idea he was so flawed and a Nazi, but they didn’t know.

That's probably why the RF worked so hard to keep the Marburg evidence from the public--they didn't want them to know how much the Palace and upper Establishment had deceived them about a Royal's true character, since they have continued to do so--Anthony A-J, C&D' s marriage, Andrew, Harry, Markle, who else? Diana exposed (too) much of herself, but not everything.

I am very interested in the Mountbatten book, and happy that you’re continuing with it! It seems that Lord Mountbatten was such a very strong influence on both Prince Philip and (then) Prince Charles that I’ve always been curious about him. Who can know how different the current British Royal Family would be now, if not for him? Intriguing! I have to say that with the revelations about Dickie and Edwina that we’ve seen in this book, it speaks highly of both Philip and Charles that ultimately it seems they had strong and overall positive characters. I do have to wonder if Charles’ romantic saga would have been different-we do know Dickie wanted Charles to marry his granddaughter, and apparently C did propose to her, but she declined. Dickie also encouraged C to sow his wild oats and not to settle with a wife at a very young age (which is what we see that Dickie did-and it would make sense if he may have regretted this early marriage).

An interesting and rather enjoyable chapter, Dickie seems one of those people who always wants to be thought of as an influencer in the top echelons of society, and it doesn’t get much higher than royalty. We are moving into the realms of how I vaguely remember him, the earlier years of his character were a surprise to me

Dickie WAS an influencer - and he EARNED IT. Just what he did modernizing the Navy with all his inventions was enough for people to respect his opinion. In addition, he was a very hard worker - and an expert polo player (which itself was highly regarded by the aristocracy).

Allegations which are not proven. Spoiler alert: in viewing a lengthy interview with this book's author, I learned that during the problems with Ireland, British Intelligence set up a "honey trap" for the IRA which included young boys. While Dickie was assassinated by the IRA, it's likey they killed him because AS AN INTELLIGENCE OFFICER Dickie supervised the "honey trap" operation - not because he was a participant!

Very religious, talked to God, claimed to hear from God, put into an asylum where she was treated by Freud who thought she was hysterical and the source of the problem was her ovaries which he fried with radiation which was experimental therapy. WOW! Also, Guy Fawkes bonfire would have been good treatment for the porn collection while everyone was busy with their adventures. 😂

No, Philip began school in Germany but was removed by the family in essence he followed Kurt Hahn from Germany to Gordonstoun. Whilst the Mountbatten brothers did look over Philip it was his Grandmother who oversaw his life, Dickie and George’s mother. Philip said in later life Dickie claimed more info than he actually had, but he credited the choice of a Navy career to Dickie and acknowledged if he had gone in the RAF he’d be dead like so many of our brave WWII pilots.
