Private, comfortable living among the treetops in this exceptionally designed 8-sided coastal retreat. The spacious wrap around deck extends the living space with views including Grand Manan, Lubec Village and Campobello Island. A wide tree lined driveway gradually ascends to a large Gambrel Garage on your right and then ascends further to what is referred to as the Mountain House Get Away. The home has been a summer rental for the past several years after having been a year-round residence. Quoting a house guest, “… the house is both spacious and cozy” and “… a perfect place to relax between hikes”. The wood finishes in the open concept living space give the house a warm, relaxing feel with plenty of natural light and southern exposure from twelve-foot double sliders. Enjoy the convenience of one floor living with two bedrooms, a central laundry with a central vacuum, and conveniently located bathroom. A bonus second level living space with 360-degree views can be used for guests, office, or however you desire. The garage is nestled below the hilltop among a mixture of tall Birch and evergreens. It has room for three to four vehicles or if you prefer plenty of space for trailers and “toys”. The roomy second level has plenty of space for more storage, work areas, hobbies, or could be finished into an in-law apartment or rental.
Lubec is the most Easterly town in the U.S.”. It is in Washington County, Maine. The area has more shoreline than any other town along Maine’s coast. Lubec village is quiet and picturesque. The candy striped West Quoddy Head lighthouse and State Park are in south Lubec and boasts hiking trails and a local history museum. It is at the gateway to the Bay of Fundy. New Brunswick, Canada is across the bridge to Campobello Island, home of Roosevelt’s International Park, picturesque Head Harbor Lighthouse and Herring Cove Provincial Park. You can also enter New Brunswick though the Calais border crossing from which you can access many Canadian destinations. Machias is the county seat. It is home to the Campus of the University of Maine at Machias, the Down East Community Hospital and many other amenities.
Recreation opportunities abound for the outdoor enthusiast and naturalist. There is beachcombing along the many public beaches, hiking on the many local trails, and boating of all kinds are popular along the many coves and inlets and rugged coastline. There are many acres of preserved lands, state parks within minutes, the Bold Coast Trail system, and the 127-mile Sunrise Trail for hiking, biking, horseback riding and 4 wheeling to explore. Lubec and the surrounding area offer many opportunities for whale watching trips and seasonal ferries are available to and from Eastport, Campobello Island, Deer Isle, and Grand Manan Island. Inland you will find many freshwater lakes in the county that can be accessed for boating, fishing, and swimming. Bird watching is very popular because of the abundant variety of native and migratory birds. The newest offering in the Lubec area for hiking, biking, camping, paddling, and bird watching are the Cobscook Shores waterfront parks. Hunting White Tailed deer, moose, Black bear and turkeys is seasonal in the thousands of acres Washington county’s woodlands.
The waters off Lubec and the Downeast coastal area have tides that eb and flow more than 20’ twice a day, revealing opportunities to explore the oceans floor and unique tide pools. It is famous for its rocky bold coast and miles of inlets, coves and picturesque harbors. The Old Sow whirlpool reveals itself on the incoming tide just off the southwestern tip of Deer Island, New Brunswick, CA. It is the largest whirlpool in the western hemisphere. Fin Back, Minke, Northern Right Whales, and Humpback whales migrate to the waters between Lubec and Grand Manan Island. Harbor Seals, Bald Eagles, Osprey, are commonly seen.
Freshwater lakes and tributaries crisscross the interior of Washington County. Southern Washington County is home to Roque Bluffs State Park which has a great sand beach and picnic areas while in northern Washington County, you can camp and hike at Cobscook State Park. Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, located in north central Washington County, purpose is to monitor and protect native wildlife, however they specialize in providing nesting and feeding habitats for many bird species. The refuge is located within the Atlantic flyway migratory route.

My husband and I got married there, and we stayed there with our baby for our first wedding anniversary. I'm guessing this means we won't be booking it again through AirBnb? Breaks my heart a little, but we'll always treasure the memories.

Serious question: Not familiar with Maine winters, but wondering if the deck would need to be shoveled/cleared after each snowstorm? Especially since the snow would be sitting directly against the shingles and lower portions of windows.
@DemiseUnseen

Well I live in New Hampshire so the winters are nearly the same. There will be plenty of snow/wind at that elevation and relatively near the coast so snow drifts will be a thing. Shoveling the whole deck wouldn't be necessary. Will add slight wear and tear to the exterior but not a rapid deterioration. There shouldn't be water seepage issues thanks to Gravity.

Snow does not magically disappear. 8 months of winter. Actually Lubec may have a longer one than us in central Maine. lol
@DemiseUnseen

@@SirenaSpades Well, it kind of does. The radiant heat from the building will melt a couple inches away from the structure. Wind drifting is a thing and might need to be attended to. The shakes will do their job, drifted windows may require a bit of staving off from storm to storm.

@@DemiseUnseen Thanks for keeping this thread accurate. I didn't think about how heat from the structure would melt snow immediately surrounding it. Been a long time since I've lived in upstate NY. Still want a cabin somewhere and am grateful for your input.
Great property for a weekend retreat. Does it have internet? how is sewage and water supply arranged?
