The Motive and the Cue charts the meeting of film and theatre royalty, Richard Burton and Sir John Gielgud, during the rehearsal period for Hamlet in 1964.
Is it motivating enough to be this summer's hot ticket at London's National Theatre?
Or is The Motive and the Cue missable?
It certainly is not for everyone, as I explain in my 3-star review.
The Motive and the Cue is directed by Sam Mendes (The Lehman Trilogy, Skyfall) and written by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, This is England).
The Motive and the Cue cast is led by Johnny Flynn (The Outfit, Lovesick) as Burton, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey, Our House) as Elizabeth Taylor, and Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen, Sherlock) as Sir John Gielgud.
This production of The Motive and the Cue runs at London's National Theatre until 15 July 2023. I was invited to the press night at the Lyttelton on 2 May 2023.
