A lot of people were calling this deck "Poison Ivy" in preview season. It seems like it's going to be the Standard equivalent of Hammer Time.

@@McArRuIzO I think the combo is good enough that if you combine it with a very strong shell that it can absolutely be a good deck. I don't think it's the same as Neo-Form because that tries to win on the spot... But it is similar to modern Hammer Time which tries to win over two turns.

Always appreciate decks that take forgotten cards and put them to use.
Deck Intro: We'll mulligan pretty aggressively to find Rotpriest... Gameplay: [Keeps a bunch of 7s with no Rotpriest.] Even after he tells himself to mulligan, Seth just hates taking mulligans too much 😆
I think this deck wants to be more all-in if it's a glass cannon. The Tainted Observer is more useful as a blue and green pitch card to both Marches than anything, so Winterhorn Blessing would be better as another targeting spell that gives a little interaction and gets multiple casts off of one card if the deck needs to mulligan. I also get how Stormchaser Drake is an attractive alternate wincon, but I wonder if Colossal Skyturtle is better as an uncounterable modal card that bounces, recurs Rotpriest, and pitches for both colors.

This deck is more cancer than og heroic , source I played heroic in standard. We didn’t have access to dumb cards like storm drake and actually had to empty our hand to play spells
Around 1,5 year ago there was a turn 2 kill combo in standard involving minion of the mighty, 2 infiuriates and a terror of the peaks
Nishoba Brawler (or any 2-mana double strike creature) + Twinferno + Gaea's Might is also a turn 3 kill in standard, but you need a lot to go right.
@IFTNCW
Жыл бұрын
Was gonna post the same thing. I've played a deck using that combo a fair bit and never got a turn 3 kill, but had loads of turn 4 kills with it (usually by turn 3 casting Weatherseed Treaty on its second chapter and then turn 4 Twinferno & Gaea's Might)
I built this list a month ago when rotpreist was pseudo-spoiled...with season of growth and tamiyos safekeepings instead of the heavy blue shell gives extra scry and extra life its freakin sweet
electrostatic pummeler from kaladesh. was turn 4 then became a turn 3 with llanowar elves from dominaria. loved that deck
There was a turn 2 win in standard in Theros-Khans of Tarkir, where you would play turn 1 land, springleaf drum, ornithopter, springleaf drum, then on turn 2 play land, tap both lands and a drum with your thopter to play jeskai ascendancy, cast a briber's purse or astral cornucopia for X=0, untapping your ornithopter and prowessing it, then tap the ornithopter again to the other drum to cast a retraction helix on your ornithopter. Now it can tap to bounce your 0 mana artifact, which untaps your ornithopter and gives it +1/+1 every time it's played. I'm not sure if it ever happened in a real game or not because it does seem staggeringly unlikely to have those 8 cards by turn 2, but it was technically a possibility.
There was the t2 combo with the kobold that you could pump and smash the double striking dragon into play like, under 2 years ago
That game vs GW toxic was awesome!

croaking counterpart works on opponent's creatures too, might have been good on Amazonian's annex sentry.
I wanna see an against the odds with Monument to Perfection. I feel like it's a sweet card to win with.
I have been utilising march of swirling mist for a long time even after after hinata rotated. My soldiers deck brought me 14/0 score in a meta game challenge last set, mostly because of the march saving the day, just like you see at minute 9:00
AN AGAINST THE ODDS ON SUNDAY? COUNT ME IN!
I do the same with black green and it seems to be a little more stable.I have back up if rot priest is some how removed and necrogen communion is always nice if you can pop on turn two with no blockers. If some how rot priest is removed it just comes back. Fill the deck with removal proliferate or any cheap buff.
I feel like some commune effects would be beneficial, especially when you don't find the rotpriest in your first 7 cards or mulligan
not that it mattered, but during game 2 could you have won faster by casting march x=2 twice, holding priority before the first resolved?

I was planning to build this deck. I already have a U/G Ivy shell. I run lots of Ledger Shredder personally
@NightmareFuelsYou

This deck can have a legitimate flier beatdown win condition if you add 4x rancor and 4x ledger shredder instead of going all in on Rotpriest
There was a turn 3 kill when runaway steamkin was in standard, Turn 1 tin street dodger, opponent at 19. Turn 2 steamkin, 1 more goblin damage, opponent at 18. Turn 3, various combinations of samut's sprint, infuriate, and uncaged fury for the kill. Used to love doing this to threeferi. It was still an awesome deck besides that too. I ran dreadhorde arcanist, and mizzium tank with the usual skewer and light up the stage. Took me to ranked mythic, and never saw a single other person run it. Everyone else was doing the ghitu lavarunner and viashino pyromancer version. This version annihilated the red mirror. Mizzium tank was secretly awesome, and triggered itself. It was my first deck that really got somewhere, so a bit biased; but that standard was awesome.
Honestly for BO3 it feels like its best place is an updated version of Mono U Tempo where you make it simic and you run this as a finisher since youre already running a lot of protection and counters
Seeing a lot of attention paid to this fella. I foresee ban talks in the works
If it was like 3 mana i don’t think it would be oppressive but right now it just seems mean, interested to see what sort of combos appear to counter it
There was a turn 2 win in scars of mirrodin that did 21 damage turn 2, it was like 7 cards long but you could do it, I saw it once
I think we will see this deck in modern. Maybe when more combo parts come, but even right now, it has chances.
I feel like this deck will be that much more dangerous in Modern, with Summoner's Pact replacing Green March, and having access to the absurdity that is Ground Rift when it target Rotpriest
In my old LGS we would call this deck "a brick", coz like a brick, if it hits, it kills, if it miss, your opponent will just laugh and hit you

The problem is that Rotpriest needs additional cards to win. Various Treasure Hunt style decks can mulligan all the way to one because all they need is the Treasure Hunt and they should win the game, but Rotpriest also needs spells to protect and target it. A hand of Rotpriest, two lands and a spell isn't likely to win the game. I think that mulliganing to six or maybe five if the six is bad is often worth it, but I don't think you can go much further than that.
Now everytime take a shot when Seth says Rotpriest

Last turn 3 kill I remember in standard was when minds desire was in standard. Well combo kill that is
Pulled one of these at pre release, sadly only got 3-4 pump/target spells in the right colors.
Me seeing this deck after first playing standard with mono green infect. Turn 1 rotpriest felt like turn 1 glistener elf to me.
i have a deck in pioneer with venerated rotpriest, zada/mirrorwing dragon, and awaken the woods and then like expedite
There’s a more optimized version with curiosity and tamiyo’s safekeeping, bring the ending, etc… cutting useless cards like bloated contaminated and that other 3 drop. The deck is more streamlined and approaches tier 1 in standard having basically no bad matches
i love croaking counterpart in this deck
"zaff, better known as zaahfriiin ahhhhleeeev" Also I used to run turn 2 delver infect in standard. T1: delver T2: flip delver, tainted strike, mutagenic growth, and assault strobe, attack gg I played the deck, its fall back plan was skitherix, and a flurry of counterspells to buy time. It was a deck where if a creature stuck around to attack your opponent lost but was very tough to pilot. Won a couple fnm's with it.
What if you play black instead of blue for diabolic intent so you can tutor rotpriest even when you don't have one? And you can replace te blue protection with ashnods intervention and tamitos safekeeping and add 8 1 or 2 drops. It does loose the turn three kill but it's probably more consistent
@stebobibo

I think blue march is too important to cut blue, it's the best non-creature card in the deck. And Ivy is pretty good. Diabolic intent requires a sac which can be awkward.

Ehhhh the problem in standard is exactly what seth talked about in the wrap up. This deck just doesn’t have the redundancy/resilience to make it a serious contender in top tiers of real magic, ie bo3, for the same reasons most single-card named decks struggle in standard. If I was gonna try to make this card work in bo3 I think I would shy away from traditional sideboard into a transformational SB. Get your g1 win (hopefully) then transform into a slightly more “traditional” aggro/midrange poison build in g2. Hell maybe throw in the 7 drop. That all said this deck is going to struggle against a real tier format. Preview day is NOT a good example of what a deck can do against established archetypes especially in a black dominated format and double especially with a deck that relies on a single 4-of G 1/2.
@Weenhander
Жыл бұрын
@@virtueofabsolution7641 definitely needs to be a part of a more dedicated poison build with tamiyos safekeeping and things like that bite spell that also gives a poison counter. This iteration is absolutely not going to be the most competitive option for a competitive format, but rotpriest itself is going to be a major player in the coming weeks of standard, i can feel it.

wow what a deck. even Cut Down is awkward as a solution here, since just targeting the Rotpriest with the spot removal triggers it. Hey Zef, it’s Ib, um, Devilish Valet was fast too!
Oooppouunent!
I feel like the deck needs to be played as simic tempo until you hit rot priest when it becomes storm combo. There were games here that looked like a match if you played them the tempo way- use your burgeoning life on your drake, use marches to phase out opponent's entire board and your creatures, etc., etc., that weren't good, but gave you a shot. If the shell was built that way (maybe plus a little card draw, though not sure what spell- cgb used curiosity effects which might be solid as synergizes with Ivy), plus on counter spells, down on the 3 mana 4/4s and proliferate guy plan) I think it'll be pretty gross in Bo1 like you said, especially since BOTH game plans while wildly different in power level are both very similarly... very toxic to play against
Does rotpriest trigger twice on March of swirling mist because it’s targeted, then phases out then phases back in? Just confused how 2 Rot priest trigger 4 counters?
We have Fauna Shaman in Standard, we could use it to tutor Rotpriest
I think, this deck might have some legs if you just splash green in a heroic deck; Virtuoso, Rotpriest, and Shredder? Seems decent
What kind of joyless individual plays control during the early access event?
Also landfall from zendikar a few years ago was turn 3 possible :)
