The Most Ridiculous Debate In The NBA

Спорт

We done with the 90s, but not really #nba
The debate of old heads vs new age basketball has never been this hot, this divided.
While this account might be joking or not, the response is real.
Plumbers not moving their feet, tackling people because they ain’t good, players shooting bricks, and the greatest player of all time, Michael Jordan, didn’t even have a left hand. Is this all true? Are we done with the 90s?
I’m tired of seeing based commentary everywhere so I decided to look for myself** and what I found, well you and I both won’t like it so strap in, cause we goin deep.
It would be pretty sad if basketball stagnated, if players didn’t build on what they saw growing up. For example, if you were 13 years old and saw Allen Iverson cross over Michael Jordan and it wasn’t called for a carry, you might go out on your driveway and practice that move. And eventually you’d get it down and add your own twist to it. That example I gave, LeBron was 13 years old when Allen Iverson crossed MJ. And somewhere saying he knew that AI was gonna get Mike.
I mean look at 3s now. When Steph Curry hit 400 threes in a season, it was bonkers. But 3 seasons later, Harden made 378. The previous record before that was Ray Allen with 269 in 2006. Now we have 7 players that have eclipsed that, some several times.
*And I think that in this debate of which era was better,* each side tries to use the argument of which players were better but have different definitions. And then the debate devolves into shouting and personal insults and we get no where, *more than any other sport I’ve ever seen.*
It’s also ludicrous to think that NBA players can’t adapt to the rules of different eras. In fact, we can see it.
If the players of yesterday were so bad, then why did the next generation immediately proceed to struggle?
But something that is indisputable is that basketball was more popular back in the 90s, at least by tv ratings.
And you can say TV ratings are archaic, in a world of social media, it’s impossible to capture the reach of the NBA versus then, and that’s probably right. But if players are better now, why is viewership of each game so much lower and struggled for the past 5 years, a problem that eventually got acknowledged by the commissioner Adam Silver. That has something to do with the style of basketball and not in the way you would think.
There’s a difference between players becoming more talented which has happened, and the NBA pushing to make things easier to also replicate the special. And there’s a couple of examples of this.
We have the removal of hand checking in 2004 to help the league help the offense after Jordan retired so that ratings could go back up.
The NBA has always been moving towards helping the offense slowly too.
They still made rule changes to help out Jordan like introducing flagrant fouls after the bad boy Pistons did unspeakable war crimes to him on national television. That was the league back then and not just with Jordan but the NBA knew they had to allow players to play without the fear of getting impaled. But the trend went further and further until it went way too far, something we’re seeing today.
Like the freedom of movement rules brought on in 2018.
We’re looking at the wrong debate man. And I think that is something all fans can agree on that the NBA has sort of lost a handle, no pun intended, on this offensive crazy NBA that they’ve created. Because they have forced the NBA to be a certain way rather than letting the players and their own unique styles dictate what happens.
Removing hand checking was to make guard play be more prevalent because they wanted more Michael Jordan types. Freedom of movement so they could have more Steph types. And once analytics had it’s run, now there was the most efficient way that every player should play and if they didn’t fit that mold, they out the league.
In fact if we look at pace over the years, it has dramatically changed each decade.
And that has led to a lot of regular season games becoming meaningless.
We’re seeing players sit out more and more, we’re seeing players gage their effort, preserving them in time for the playoffs, typically meaning defensive effort has taken a step back. And when players were able to get away with it for years, especially after David Stern stepped down, players kept pushing the boundaries.
I think why so many people, even former players keep saying that older basketball was better is because culture was different around games. Regardless of skill or lack of skill, players appeared to show more effort, games had more meaning and importance. I think if you hear how older players talk about having to ball out in the regular season for fans, for important match ups, it’s different than players choosing to sit out, needing a whole in season tournament just to have competitive basketball in the regular season.

I grew in the 80s era, 90s was both my teens and my basketball playing years. I watched every Bulls game from 1990 to 1998. Even the Jordan-less years. It was amazing, and exciting! However. This is a new era, I stopped watching after Jordan retired a second time, meaning I never watched a single game or highlight of him with the Warriors. But I am not delusional like most people who still believe Jordan walked on water. And I buy every year the current Jordan model and he's the GOAT for me. But I never hate on current players. I am not that soft. I am enjoying this era of Basketball, it's fast, it's exciting, defense is great but any player of today is either a shooter or plays multiple positions. Records are meant to be broken. Sports need to improve and grow. Things change as they should, why hate on something that doesn't seem like what you used to like? Enjoy it while it lasts. This era will also change and another generation will take over

I grew up around fhe sametime as you and ill answer that question... The 70s.. it may have had some great players and it had great balance ...BUT.. noone was watching 👀.. so the NBA had to make some changes.. which lead the Magic Bird and Jordan... after jordan while the 00s was a beloved era it was hard to watch becuase it was too much defense... now the pigilam as turned the other way and its un watchable because its too much offense... but instead of changing the NBA and Media has spent the last 5-7 years tellng us we dont know what we are talking abt and the talent and leauge is better so just appreciate it... No!!!... how abt change the product so ill watch like you did in the 80s and mid 00s... The issue isnt the fans the issue is the anyatics who run the basketball world thinking they know more than the paying customer... if this dont stop the NBA will become ill relevant its already losing to professional and.collage football and now its losing to collage basketball 🏀 and just recently it lost to women's collage basketball 🏀... the NBA needs to wake up

How have players gotten better? How are they more skilled? You've said that in your video, but you didnt explain how that is. Players shoot better because the defense isnt as good. If today's players played the way they did in the 90s they would be winded. Their endurance isn't as good. Players in the 80s and 90s sprinted up and down the court, contested shots, fought for rebounds, and they were constantly moving. Today one team shoots a three and then lets the other team get the rebound as they jog back to "play defense." Then the other team does the same thing. Today's players aren't more skilled otherwise they wouldn't need to travel and carry the ball so much. Rules have gotten easier so players who dont have any skills can score easier.

it should be "we done with the 90s rules" since that is the real reason the game looks different today, no handchecking and freedom of movement rules have allowed smaller, skilled players to thrive in the modern day, if they allowed dudes to handcheck and be more physical when they dont have the ball, only bigger wings or exceptionally fast smaller guards would still be good and skill would not matter as much thats why most of the better players in the 90s were bigger wings 6'6 or big men, they had to play from the post more because they would be limited facing up on a defender, even the shooters were typically bigger like Reggie Miller or Ray Allen. AI had an advantage because he was super quick with a great handle making it difficult to handcheck him.

You know, although I agree with basketball is more than just a purely physical sport, I see the appeal in making it physical. Seeing MJ’s athletic prowess was a feat in itself, especially the amazing dominance he showed. I’d say it might be interesting if we see a hybrid of all eras. Aka, changing rules throughout the game allowing different aspects of the basketball to be emphasized. For example, maybe alternate rules between seasons, weeks, days, or even quarters to allow for athleticism/physicality (classic old nba) vs ball handling/shooting skills (street ball). Why not have it all in one game. This also allows for the need for more team strategy, which would be amazing to see (almost like football). I think we’re all excited to see the greatest of the greats succeed because we want to witness history (which is why we see more money in the eras that had an indisputable goat discussion). We don’t want basketball to just be big guys doing unstoppable things. There’s no skill or defense to that. Just like Shaq or Zach Edey. However, allowing for free movement or banning hand checking basically makes defense basically impossible if the ball handler is skilled enough with the ball alone. That doesn’t make the player athletic tho. Hence, why not have both to make each quarter a suspense. The only problem I see in this is that such a game would require so much more resources/effort to pull off perfectly, which is already stretched thin already.

I think more players now are more skilled when it comes to shooting and handles. But too many 3s in a game is boring to watch. The last time I watched a whole game was the Finals between LeBron and Steph. After that, I just get NBA content from KZreadrs.

Too many freethrows and no defence allowed is a biggest problem. Also constant helping Lakers and LeBalco get far in playoffs by refs take all credibility away from nba. No league what is obv corrupted is watchable. Also make they team worse middle of the season is not part of any serious sport league. Tanking should be punish harshly. Not get rewarded by better picks.

I bet a lot of these ignorant ppl who claim the 90s is dead couldn't even beat their dad in basketball 😂 And I'll go as far as to say they prolly haven't achieved much in life to understand the significance of predecessors and what they've established for current ppl to thrive in the way they're able to. If their logic on Lebron being the goat is true, then we wouldn't be calling Lebron the goat but rather Jokic or Luka They like to scratch the surface of the internet and claim they must be right cuz they hav access to all the info they need. They jus don't understand how shallow and brittle their arguments are In a couple of decades, kids are definitely gon use the clips of all the traveling and Harden's defense to argue that this era is trash and over 💀

Regardless of how you feel about the 90s....today wouldn't exist without it. And the NBA wouldve been dead if it wasnt for Magic, Larry, Mike, etc. to carry the torch. The NBA would be gone, or it would be like the XFL and players would still be fist fighting with nostrils filled of coke(sorry its 2024 i meant fentanyl)

NBA today can't be better, the players themselves won't complete 82 game schedules even if the are healthy. Everyone is a shooter now, so most just hang out on the perimeter, you can't breathe on a player with the ball without getting called and this epidemic of flopping is taking over. How can more skilled players in a less physical league, play less games than ever before and somehow be called better basketball? Is this reverse world? It's so bad the commissioner had to address the bullshit, even that whatever the hell they call that All Waste weekend was anything to prove, basketball has turned in shyte. Players traveling en masse across the court like it's normal, euro step my foot, more like dimensional step. Sure currently players are far better shooters, well some of them, basketball used to bee a mix of inside perimeter play and ball movement to draw the defense to the big man and either he score drawing the foul or kicks it out to the open man. Whenever i see inside play, there is a lot of weird shenanigans like dudes acting like they got blasted in the face, unless of course you're around Draymond Green then all calls are right(that idiot need to get banned). Makes me wonder where did these current players learn to play ball? I think previous generation raised the awareness of basketball so high that the created a porcelain players curated in some well air conditioned facility and not on the blacktop in a park.

Okay so I I have not watched the game in years and I struggled to watch highlights now play. If they're not going to care if they're not going to put in the effort I'm not going to spend my money or my time. If the league is going to let it be run by all the players with less and less accountability why should I care fundamentally that's why I lost touch with basketball. If they don't care and if they're not going to do things that make sense to me I'm not going to waste my time. Does a lot going on in the world and it's not worth it. I can't be the only one who thinks that

The only thing these players today have gotten better at is three point shooting and shooting overall I suppose. Their handles are weak and their bodies are even weaker. I say their handles are weak because they basically are travelling half the time or carrying the ball. Only Kyrie has a great clean handle. I never see Kyrie palm the ball. These players' conditioning is absolutely pathetic. They look leaner than ever, but break down so fast. The 90s players had all that muscle, but were much more durable.

if the player is better now and basketball is better now, Why the viewership of NBA so much lower and struggled for the past 5 years? EASY, because of LeFlop. NBA now is like WWF. The WNBA plays tougher than the NBA. LeFlop would probably get hurt in that league!!

A wise man once said, "People who were great in one era would be great in any era." That's because great players always work on their weaknesses. MJ had a trash 3pt %. But if MJ were in this era, he would be MJ with Steph Curry shot.

So basically, Steph Curry ruined the league by being so good, but it's not his fault, it's Adam Silver's for trying to replicate it across the league. Personally, Adam Silver is one of the worst commissioners of all time. He took a league that Stern made worldwide before ANY major sport besides soccer and destroyed it by meddling with the rules to the point the game is no longer recognizable from what Stern left.

You can't say Jorwhased were better in the 90s when at the same time you are saying today players are better. Bron is the goat, playing in the present era with the most points EVER. The only thing you can say is Jorbum is the most influential player ever, but saying it's the best? Let me guess what are you using to measure greatness ? Hype, highlights, shoe sales and TEAM ACHIEVEMENTS.

Bring back handchecking and get rid of the dumb ass freedom of movement rule. If s defenders steps in front of you tough luck. Also thos calling a foul shit when a ginger gets tapped after a shot needs to stop. Not to mention refs fucking uo everything all time. The same way I say Stephen curry is my greatest plsyer ever is the same way I say the best iPhone is the 5s and not the first iPhone. The game has been shaped completely by Steph. He was and stil is the optimal offensive player. MJ is 100% 2nd in my books because he was the best of the past. Curry broke down the opponents in his time and has shaped the future nba player

The best player in history debate started when Lebron's CAVs beat Golden State. Before that was the Curry vs Lebron debate. When Lebron's came back from the 3-1, the haters switched to MJ trying to minimize Brons accomplishments. How great a player has to be to create a complete narrative change! 😅

i agree w everything, but to add when people say "players are soft" compared to the 90s, its the same thing, playstyles of players are a production of rule changes over the years, if 90s guys played in this era, why would they not try to use rules to their advantage and flop? if anything blame the league and the rules not the players
