The most realistic eclipse timelapse I've ever taken - Spring 2022 Lunar Eclipse HDR stack
Ғылым және технология
A real lunar eclipse is DARK - the red moon is super faint, and it doesn't illuminate the clouds around it the way the regular sunlit moon does. Using two cameras, a tracker, and a bit of math. I created a video that's hopefully closer to what the human eye sees than what any single auto-exposing camera would be able to manage.
There's a lot more info about the process in the full video: • Eye vs Camera: Why it'...

Sup everybody! I got some requests to just post the highest quality version of the timelapse as a standalone video (especially to combat KZread's compression), so here's the 4K beast itself! If you want to learn more about how this was filmed and didn't watch the first video, check this out! kzread.info/dash/bejne/aIZhy6-mk7Sbkaw.html

Is launching spacecraft on a hot day better than cold ?
I wouldn't have known the crazy amount of work that went into this from only seeing this short video, it gave me a whole new way to appreciate the smooth transitions despite the difference in exposure. Great job!

Same. I watched the other video detailing that effort before watching this. Definitely appreciate the result, though.
I'm 99.5% confident that someone is going to use this video without permission.
Amazing! Thank you for showing this without the helper lines! Now, is it possible to have it closer to real-time? ;)

I love seeing the shift of the moons position against the background stars.
Having never seen a lunar eclipse myself, I appreciate the effort for realism a lot :)

I call BS on this lol. We have on average 3 lunar eclipses per year. You cannot have gone your entire life without seeing at least one.

Clouds were being kind that evening!
Sweet. You continue to awe, amaze, and inspire. Like a beautiful yet complex piece of Classical music, I had to watch this video .. and the how you did it video .. several times, to achieve full appreciation for your genius.
That was beautiful
Happy Super Month. 👩🏿🦰
I had to comment because I know you put a whole bunch of work into this way more than we could ever possibly imagine. I am absolutely certain that a lot of people have no idea how much work you put into making this come out so nicely. A+ It actually came out really really nice and the music was a nice addition to it thank you for sharing it with us.
Very beautiful
Very very beautiful
me (watching with a phone, not even noticing youtube compression): noice.
Impressive!!
Great! Thanx!
Awesome work must say. really enjoy how well you explain things in general :) (commenting on a video with no explanation =)))
The clouds make it MUCH more realistic! Beautiful time lapse

Indeed! How’s you get so lucky with the clouds!
Damned clouds
Your last video reminded me a lot about the way the new Zoom F6 works, it's an audio recorder which uses dual ADC in order to capture the biggest resolution possible. It is made so that you don't have to dial audio gain ; the dynamic range is so big that the sound will be captured without clipping or too much background noise

One ADC with high input gain and one with low input gain? I was considering that technique for a microcontroller based meter I want to make.
Please go watch the full video as well if you haven't already! The process is almost as great to see as the result!

that's beautifyl
Sweet...
For some reason I was expecting salty flat earther comments
Dude I fished a kayak tournament in Jordan Lake. That’s cool
Dr. Tyson (whom I have nothing but immense respect for but had quite possibly the funniest hot take I've ever seen): There's nothing special about this lunar eclipse, go home AlphaPhoenix:
first bit looked real good you count see gray at all from all dat nerd stuff you did. the cloud algo seemed pretty noice. without the dots and circles an stuff that was real cool an looked how it looked im me eyes, but not in me camera
Jordan Lake is an excellent astronomy spot when the skies are clear. The Raleigh Astronomy Club meets there every so often.

those freacking cloud ahaha
Hmm... around 0:37, there's some weird light artifacts... like, it's as if the moon itself is in the clouds, the sun is a lot closer, and we're getting light rays off of it. But of course, there wouldn't be any clouds that high up, the sun isn't so close, etc... Was someone playing with flashlights or something? I'll go watch the explainer video, too, but noticed here so asking here. :)

@@AlphaPhoenixChannel Hmmm, maybe. It looks like a big X, and then a straight line that's just one side of the X... seems to me like a weird pattern for dew on the lens, but... not sure!
I'm really annoyed that I missed this eclipse. I was only told the day after
Unusually dark eclipse, I think from Tonga volcano?
I've never really taken the time to look at a lunar eclipse before this last one because they're so common I always just figured I'll see the next one, but they're really underwhelming. Looks absolutely nothing like the bright cherry red long exposure and amped up contrast pictures that always accompany the media's "super blood" this, and "double cherry blossom" that type sensationalized headlines they constantly pump out. It actually looks very much like this video. Just dark with a slight hint of red from the Rayleigh scattered out / blue depleted filtered atmospheric light.

Kinda disagree agree on that overhyped titles that have little to do with the lunar eclipse cringe but I have seen 7 totalities 8 I guess “blood moons” one of them was a deep partial but at least in a low light pollution area they are significantly better than in a high light pollution area and rare to see the same two colours each one is usually a different colour by slight
As a videographer I have a question, though I might be overlooking something :D I did this a few years ago with a single camera both with bracketing and in camera HDR creation and both worked perfectly fine and got me similar results. Why did you choose to use 2 cameras?
I wouldnt have uploaded it without a watermark ^^"
My man took a video of a hologram. That’s gotta be copyright infringement or something.
Now all you need to do is do a collaboration with: ElectroBOOM(for sure!), Cody’slab, Steve Mould, The Action Lab, The Backyard Scientist, Styropyro(yes please!), Allen Pan, William Osman, Veritasium, Stuff Made Here, Smarter Everyday(I can’t wait!), Nilered/blue, or even I Did A Thing(HowYouGoing!) to become a full fledged ScienceTuber. (P.S. I left out Mark Rober and Vsauce because they have become too mainstream and they will only do a video with you if you are VERY famous or completely unknown and Alpha (IMO!) is just south of middle. I also debated putting destin on this list because he too is very mainstream but he is also hidden away in our own little corner… also for those of you who think SciShow should be on this list don’t understand what a ScienceTuber is… they do experiments while SciShow just reports stuff… they are basically basically just another media outlet).
People are still talking about this? It was last season
WERE CLOUDS ............. ZEEBRA CROSSING !!!!!!!! THEY WAITED FOR MOON TO PASS
Show this to a flat earther watch them cry.😢
borderline
Who in the hell uses auto exposure on an eclipse? LMAO, I suppose amateurs might.
stupid clouds for me :(
Not realistic - I don't think you can see those circles and text in the night sky, even with a telescope
yo tsup man .. tks for your brain ! i have some idea that is too large to talk here .. i need some help from you to calculate a weird reality ! can you give an email ? or .. whatever , pls ! tks , and have a great day
