The Most Pressing Problem of Our Time? | Stephan Trzeciak | TEDxUND

This is a story of an awakening… and finding fulfillment. For physician scientist Dr. Stephen Trzeciak, his research career was going exactly as planned, and his scientific program was hitting every milestone for “success”. And then, an unexpected question from a 12 year-old (his son) caused him to reexamine his life’s work and change the trajectory of his career. One question changed everything. In this TEDxUND talk, Dr. Trzeciak will take you on a journey through this awakening, and dare you to ask the question “What is the most pressing problem of our time?” University of Notre Dame Alumnus, Class of 1992, Philosophy and Pre-Professional Studies
Professor of Medicine, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University
Physician Scientist, Intensivist, NIH-funded Clinical Researcher This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

12:37 - Following your dream could (and generally will) lead to compassion... He hasn't accounted for that. 13:25 - No, that's wrong. It doesn't *necessarily* do that. It hasn't for me. Okay, while that "need" message is probably great for most people, it's terrible for me because a little while ago I realised "nothing *needs* to exist". Desires and wants exist, but not *needs* . To me, no-one *needs* to do anything. No-one *needs* anything. There's no *objective* determiner of needs. It sort of follows this quote - "Life has as much meaning as you ascribe to it." Interestingly enough though, if I do think through the lense of that quote then what I am doing with my life is fulfilling the greatest "need" I can see. But I didn't get to this point through that lense. This isn't to say that it isn't a good lense for most people to look at their life through, I think it probably is - it just isn't for me. 14:30 - Ahhhhh, it so should have ended there! Regardless, great talk and message!

A very important message at a time when anxiety, depression and suicide has sky rocketed amongst people under 35. We obviously need to make some shifts in our priorities.
