    I've been daily driving this mini pc for about a month now I think, first thing I did was turn that RGB crap off in the bios, after that I bumped up the power plan in the bios to performance (70W) and tbh for daily computing I think its just as fast or faster then my desktop, I just moved my m.2 boot drive over to the mini pc to minimize the changes. Not a single bluescreen, or random restart, lag or hang is basically non-existent with it. I have been running it in 1080 res for gaming and im getting results around a mid tier discreet gpu results which if you think about it is kind of insane for integrated graphics only pulling 70W total system power. When I get a chance I'll pick up a pcie 4.0 gpu base and utilize the oculink port and I have no doubt this configuration will be an absolute BEAST of a system.

    I really didn't expect to love this system as much as I have. The blue they used is just so beautiful to look at. not a fan personally of the tiger image but the fact that you can replace it with anything you want or just turn it off makes it great. I honestly hope more mini PC manufacturers start making systems with different colors.

    the "blue" is one of the 3 colors that CYCLE. You can change the pattern if you can create one.. no link is provided to sell you anything other than the tiger, but supposedly they make logos for product reviewers. You cannot choose a single static color... its all or nothing. I believe the logo display was a placeholder for upcoming models that offer a touch screen display in its place.

    I almost bought a 790 Pro, I didn't because of the reports of blue screens and random shutdowns and crashes, I suspect they cant get an effective cooling solution into a package that small, however, if you do a CPU comparison of the 7840 and the 7940 there is very little difference between the two, biggest being about 100mhz on the graphics.

  • @EVOTech1

    @EVOTech1

    6 ай бұрын

    unfortunately not. I don't really know of any mini PC that does not use JDEC speeds. XMP/DOCP is pretty much only used in full size memory sticks. there were some XMP SODIMM DDR4 RAM sticks but there were only a handful of laptops that could actually use it. If you used it in a non XMP laptop, it would run at the lowest JDEC speed specified in it, usually around 2133/2666, which would hurt your performance. 5600 is the max speed you can get on this system. future Mini PCs will likely support higher speeds but these current systems will not support newer JDEC DDR5 speeds.

    Not sure where the Oculink idea came from - think it's a solution looking for a problem - and the light show us a just a weird choice, but the actual machine looks pretty advanced. There is a big jump in price from the next model down in their range - the UM690s - and this model, so can't help but wonder what they could have done by putting this chipset in a plainer box without the gimmicks.

    Occulink is a cabling interconnect standard for PCIe, a way of having PCI peripherals off-board. It avoids the overheads of tunnelling PCIe through Thunderbolt, particularly latency, a problem that severely limits eGPU performance over Thunderbolt. That's why TB connected eGPUs offer lacklustre performance compared to the same card plugged into a PCIe slot with the same four lanes. Occulink throws away the TB overhead by being a native PCIe connect without tunnelling.

  • @jabonorte

    @jabonorte

    7 ай бұрын

    @@nezbrun872 Yes, but is it really something that needed to be included? How many people are actually going to use it on a mini PC? For most people who game, it's easier to have a mini-ITX PC for gaming, as it's neater/less complicated than having a mini PC and an external graphics card. It might be possible to use the Oculus to link to Oculink hardware, but the IGPU doesn't have enough power to make that worthwhile. I think it says a lot that Minisforum don't pre-install the card in the PC, because people are more likely to want the slot for NVME drives. They'd already included a 2nd slot in the Ryzen 9 board, so the Oculink was probably cheap/easy to include the card as a sales gimmick because all they needed to do is design-in the hole in the case for the pass-through. At best it's a niche selling point on a slightly improved existing platform.

  • @shaolindreams

    @shaolindreams

    @@jabonorte Quite a few probably looking for that feature. You can't really take your mini-ITX PC around in your backpack, whereas this box is small very portable and you can connect a graphics card for serious gaming.. e.g. at home, Or i think even with the graphic cards in the backpack it's still smaller and much lighter than a mini-ITX PC. Occulink is a badass feature tbh, rather have it than not. This mini has a strong CPU matched with a external GPU it's going to be able to game on a much higher level than just the APU. Modular gives you more options.

    @@jabonorte Unless you want a very high performance pc in a very small and mobile platform, largest item being your external graphics card. You could fit everything you need into a multi handgun case you can pick up from harbor freight, 4K TV's are everywhere. Some will try to argue that you can connect a external gpu via thunderbolt 4 and they would be correct, you can but thunderbolt 4 max transfer rate is about 40GB/sec at best... Oculink rate is 63GB/sec which eliminates the bottleneck completely meaning you can fully utilize a 4090 on a mini pc using oculink, only thing I haven't seen yet is gpu manufactures building the pc onto the external gpu itself, Id think that would be worth a propriety interface personally.

    I have both and as I'm using a EGPU using Oculink the 780 XTX is better as its a far tidier setup. I also am not so keen on the 790 pro's IO, which has 2 usb4's on the front and none on the back. Performance wise I can't tell the difference although I believe the 790 pro is a couple of FPS faster. The max VRAM on the 790 pro is 6 gig whereas you can go up to 16 gig on the 780 XTX. If you don't use the Oculink its a coin toss, but I still prefer the 780 XTX because of that USB4 on the back which provides both video and power to my monitor.
