Growing up in the 70s, you couldn't get away from radio hits like 10cc's 'I'm Not in Love' or Doobie Bros' 'Black Water.' I grew to hate them because of the overplaying. Listening to them recently, they floored me with how good they were.

I disagree about Back to Black. I think it was more "fashionable" than overrated. Amy W. had her own "retro" groove that was not built for large arenas. My respect for this album grew when I listened more closely to the arrangements, and they're fantastic. And her vocals are superb.

Honestly a good point. Just because something's overrated doesn't make it automatically terrible, it could just be decent but with an unjustified amount of hype and reputation to it. I do like some of the bigger singles off of Thriller, especially the title track, but I can see why the album on the whole doesn't quite match the sales figures. (And in my opinion his best song was Smooth Criminal, anyway, that's a hill I'm prepared to die on.) As for albums I'm a bit more specifically versed in, I might have to be a bit controversial and say The Wall, at least among prog albums. I don't think it's bad, by any means, and there's a lot I really like and appreciate about the themes and some specific standout tracks. I just have a bit of a hard time wanting to go back to listen to it as a whole because I find the plot, while good in concept, a bit scattershot in execution, a bunch of songs are a bit boring to me even when they're necessary for the story to work, and that inflates the run time a bit past what I'd be willing to put up with. That, and the bitter irony of an album about the dangers of self-isolation only driving Roger Waters further from the people around him. It's still a really good album, but coming after a string of truly great albums it's a bit underwhelming for its reputation. There's still the makings of a great album in there, it's just not quite finished. (As unpopular an opinion as it is I find myself going back to the Gilmour-led albums more than The Wall, maybe I'm just weird but there's some good tracks buried on those.) That said, you can't argue with Comfortably Numb. But hey, I've seen plenty of people be harsher than me about The Wall, so, if enough people call something overrated, does it cease to be overrated in some sense? Worth pondering, I suppose.

I’m a big prog head so I’ve tried to watch you multiple times but your delivery has always put me off so I’ve never gotten through more than about a minute of the show, but today I hung in there to see if you think Dark Side of the Moon is overrated because I do. Great album sure, but is it really so good it deserves to be on the charts for like 40+ years? No. Then when you said Wish You Were Hear and Animals is better I decided right then and there that I will be watching you from now on. I’ve had this exact conversation with many people and they always look upon me with disdain. I also think Pet Sounds is WAY overrated. And I find myself agreeing with most, not all, of your assessments of the other albums you brought up. So I will be watching from now on.

I think to talk about GnR’s Appetite you have to look at it in the context of the time it came out when MTV was drowning in synth pop and hair metal bands( a few of which were good), but nonetheless, Appetite felt like a breath of fresh air at the time. I also think the deep cuts on that album are better than most of the singles that came off the record. In retrospect I still think it’s their best album and I do still like it, but not as much as I used to, so maybe it hasn’t aged very well.

Maybe it's just me but I heavily dislike the term "overrated" and find it overused. Strikes me as conceited since it's about thinking that you know whether or not something deserves the acclaim it gets and I think that saying "this isn't for me and I can take solace in the fact that it's for someone else" is a far more mature way of going about things.

I find the "overrated *band*" lists pointless and frustrating because most people have only a cursory and incomplete knowledge of a bands catalog. I've seen reaction videos of middle aged guys in AC/ DC t shirts doing first time reactions to Black Sabbath or Queen. Some bands are known for only a few songs, and those will likely be accessible ones that get played on the radio. There's so many bands whose best songs are hidden away on their albums that rarely get airplay. If all people knew of The Beatles was She Loves You and Day Tripper then most people would think them highly overrated. Overrated *albums* lists are a bit better because there's a higher chance that people have actually listened to it all the way through and formed an opinion.

You are so right- aside from the great 'Billie Jean,' the album should be called 'Filler.' The LP that Rock critics adore is 'Forever Changes' by Love. Try as I might, I don't hear it. BTW, the best Stones album is 'Let it Bleed.'

Great video Scot! Good pick with thriller. Beat it is the only song I love from the album and I really love the guitar solo, to each their own. The rest of the album is good and MJ had such a unique voice and presence so it's easy to see why it was such a good seller but the songwriting doesn't really live up to the hype in my opinion. Most overrated for me would be London Calling, I don't hate it by any means but I don't hear what is so special about it. Yeah, it's eclectic but many albums are. The songwriting doesn't do a whole lot for me. I'm curious though, what are y'all's opinion on the velvet underground & nico? I love it immensily but I could see how people might find it overrated. To this day, I still don’t have any Michael Jackson in my collection. And although I’ve thought about getting ‘ Thriller ‘ in the past, I just couldn’t go there due to its burnout play. Speaking of burnout, I get why people are tired of albums like Dark Side, but I still think Rumors is exceptional. It rocketed its way to stardom because its overall appeal to the masses. Rumors is one of those that people enjoyed without even being a fan of Fleetwood Mac. However, I’m definitely into the early Peter Green material.

I remember when I first actually went out and bought a copy of Led Zeppelin 4 back in the 80’s, as I sat there listening, I found myself wishing I could actually experience this music for the first time. Every song was absolutely brilliant, but the were ALL perennial staples of the mainstream Rock radio of the day, to the point where I’d already grown up hearing everyone of these songs my whole life, I was intimately familiar with every note, I didn’t need to actually buy the album, it was already pretty much engrained my DNA.

first of all great channel, I think that an album can be overrated and overplayed but still great. I guess dark side of the moon is overrated but it is still one of my favorite albums of all time and it is way better than wish you were here and animals, in my opinion. What works against dark side, works in animal's favor, being an underrated album. However, Dark side of the moon is just perfect, I love that album. I love animals, meddle and wish you were here too, it just doesn't feel organic and right for me too say that they are better albums than dark side of the moon just because I have underplayed them. Cheers!!!

It’s depends on HOW something is overrated. Is it in terms of popularity, or is it in terms of its innovation? In that regard, yes, I do think Pet Sounds is not the monumental work of art that it’s often considered. I agree about thriller. Good album, but nothing spectacular. I would also say, that Princes popularity far exceeds his actual talent, but that’s another story.

Prince? Hmmmm. When I saw him live it changed my opinion of him. This was right at the time of 1999 - right before he blew up. I was impressed. But I’m easily influenced…

Thriller was the first album I ever bought. I was listening to it over and over, then I moved on to some pop and new wave music and, having brothers who were a lot older than me, I discovered progressive rock and some hard rock stuff. Later, I became a metalhead and I must admit that I think it's funny to think that my musical journey started with Michael Jackson, but hey, kids have to start somewhere... Maybe some swifties will eventually end up listening to some female fronted metal bands...

When I think of "overrated" I think of something that the hype brought more people to it than the "product" itself (remove the hype and it dies in obscurity). For example, in prog, I can't help but think of the album 666 by Aphrodite's Child. I simply refuse to believe loads of Progers are putting that album on every day. The production quality is weak, it has one good song (The Four Horsemen), a couple tolerable "ok" songs, but the majority of it to me is unlistenable, but for some reason what most would consider unlistenable, others consider "ground breaking and experimental." That's one thing about Prog, you find albums and artists like that, but I plead guilty in not always getting it, maybe it's because I've never done drugs. Haha PS: I just confirmed by theory...on Spotify The Four Horsemen has around 13 million listens, the next closest track is The Battle of the Locust with only 1.4 million, and it's under a minute long. :)

I had a feeling you were going to pick the one you did. It's hard to disagree but I still don't think it's horrible but yes probably very overrated. A personal pick for me is Def Leppard's Hysteria. Those songs were just played to death and as such I have a hard time with it now. I much prefer the two that came before it.

I've always felt Dark Side was the last "Pink Floyd" album. I tend to divide their career into four parts: 1) the Syd Barrett (and to a lesser Rick Wright) Band, '65-early '68; 2) Pink Floyd, '68-'73, when I think they operated most as an actual band and joint creative unit; 3) the Roger Waters band, '73-'83, and 4) David Gilmour & friends, '87-now. Dark Side is great but it was also the worst thing that could've happened to them by that point. I thought Nevermind was overrated even at the time. Part of it was that I always felt the tracklisting was off; I did once come up with a revised version once but I forget exactly how I did it.

Consider this fact (ok its defensible), the best vocal performance on Thriller is Not Jackson's. It is Vincent Prices awesome monologue on the title track. The last thing the man did career-wise as a performer, and what a hellacious performance. Gotta give major props to Jackson for letting another performer steal the spotlight so utterly.
