Agree that Mustang Sally is definitely covered by bands more than any other song. Period. A close second would be Brown Eyed Girl. Those are the cover band staples.

Im from Drew Ms. about 25 minutes south of Clarksdale. The air is thick, the humidity is 150% (in summer), and the devil walks with you every step. That's why the blues was born there. For some folks mister devil is their only buddy. I believe the RJ Crossroads legend. Thanks as always for your great content.

Still beats Brown Eyed Girl or Sweet Home Alabama both of which were the bane of my bar band-playing existence.

Yeah, then there’s like 1000 other songs that have the same progression as those songs. The Joker, is like reverse Sweet Home, and it gets old quick, unless the band is cool about extending it a little. 😄

I’m 54 years, play blues and rock, have seen a zillion bands and blues jams. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone cover crossroads.

I am a 52 year old musician that has played in several cover bands. I am baffled that I have never even heard of this song until this video

There have been several movies about it. One for example is “Crossroads” starring Ralph Macchio as a guitar student and featuring Steve Vai as the Devils guitarist.

In the UK we used to bury suicides/murderers (and suspected Vampires) at crossroads. Thinking was that the crossroad served to confuse the spirits and stop them from returning to thier village/town. A perfect place for the Devil to collect lost souls.

This is pretty funny. I was in a cover band in the late 90's called Crossroads, and I bet you can't guess one of the songs we played in that band🤣

Let's not forget Big Yellow Taxi. It seems like everyone and his brother feels the need to cover that stupid song.

On Bass, doing a 2nd substitution - Playing B instead of E (or F#) is very nice. Works on the guitar part as well.

Clapton’s version is also a mashup with Traveling Riverside Blues.

I don't know if you've ever heard of Lex and Terry (it's a morning radio show) but they play the John Mayer version of this song as their outro every day. I've never actually heard it before (except the little bit they play on the show) and didn't know what it was until now. I only know it's John Mayer because they've mentioned it.

I admit that the Cream version is what got me wanting to play guitar cuz I wanted to play like young Clapton. Personally the definitive version.

They definitely went down to the crossroads

1.) Cowboys in late 1800s Southwestern United States when I'm disrespectful, as a newcomer in their local watering hole. 2.) Having to pee when I'm on an elevator.

Had no idea this was the song when you mentioned the most OVERPLAYED song in rock history! First, because it's a blues song, second, it's a 1930's song/track! But it has been among my favourites for at least 2 decades, I love Roberts music and listen to it regularly

If you haven't heard "I Killed Robert Johnson" by The Stone Foxes you absolutely should....it's told from the perspective of the man who supposedly poisoned Robert's drink for flirting with his wife. Its a blast to play too; really fun main riff!

Robert Johnson almost certainly had Marfans syndrome and most likely died from a thoracic aortic dissection , a painful thing which explains him “on the ground barking like a dog”. His long fingers are typical of the arachnodactyly found in Marfans and Jo doubt helped his guitar dexterity.

According to the documentary “Devil At The Crossroads”, it was likely Johnson drinking a poisoned bottle of whiskey given to him by the husband of a woman Johnson was seeing that caused the thoracic aortic dissection. Not disputing the Marfans Syndrome thing, mind. There’s also a theory that both he and Paganini may have had Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome as well as Marfans, which could explain their abnormal amount of flexibility in their hands and fingers.

@@atraxuswraithe6031 What "poison" would do that ? The most effective and available poison to lace alcohol with is methanol, but that doesn't cause aortic dissection. A more sensible post-hoc medical analysis leads to the conclusion that it was a collagen disorder that would lead to a dissection, supported by the photo showing his fingers.

Last time I looked it up, Hey Joe was more covered. Crossroads IS high on the "how often covered" list though.

You don't have to learn it, it's a straight twelve bar blues. Watch out for the ending though. A few bands play the "classical" IIm-V-I-I chord progression for the last four bars the way Robert Johnson did it himself, others use the more "modern" V-IV-I-I blues ending.

I like the RUSH version one of many.

It was overplayed until John Mayer pulled out his version. That whole album is on the same level - the drums, the bass, the production... Probably what made this exact song so nice to listen to as well - nevertheless, best version of all times. Thanks to Cream, by the way, but their part in this was like 5% of the whole story in this :)

I don't know. I personally don't consider Oasis to be a rock band even though they are classified as such, but every single a-hole with an acoustic guitar plays Wonderwall.

I remember trying to find that album: Pump It and never could locate it, then the masters were destroyed in that fire a few years' ago, but at least more versions of it are online.

The Beatles landed on Ed Sullivan theatre, and a million boys started bands. Cream released Crossroads, and a million guitarists started to jam. It was all different from then on.

First song I thought it would be is Mustang Sally.

These days the go to is Superstition among the rock guitar players when they jam. Satch, Vai, Collen, etc.

Just for fun I so every now and then look for covers on you tube. Last time Motorhead's Ace of spades. I found every sort of music from a "rap" version to jazz and even a a banjo version.

Robert Johnson didn't sell his soul to The Devil. Stories say he disappeared for about 6 months and when he came back, he was awesome. Some people call that "Wood Shedding ".

I never learned that song nore heard anybody playing it around in all my years :) In my youth, I remember a concert with a couple of band playing, we played Knocking on the heaven's door (guns version) and ear 2 other bands cover it after us... that was pretty funny and unfortunate.

I have never played Crossroads, and live in person have only heard it played by Clapton But it seems like an easy song to swap solos on
