THE Most Interesting SAWMILL Video Ever Made.

Today I mill up logs that burned in the Detroit Lake fire 2 years ago which also claimed my friend's dad's cabin. He'll use this lumber to rebuild his new cabin. ENJOY!

    The blade that hit the spike is still usable. A good sharping service can get it sharp. Can still cut well but leaves a fair amount of texture . My guy always tags the blades that have hit metal. Makes good blade for yard trees.

    Watching logs being turned into useable lumber never gets boring for me. Sometimes I wonder if your back will hold up what with lifting those planks from the mill! So, you're turning a milestone hey? Well around here some folks would say, "Ah, you're only a boy!" Congratulations, and that's a super way to celebrate your special birthday. Stay safe,.. I imagine we'll all be here when you get back. Cheers!

    Bandsaw mills are typically more portable and easier to maintain. There is also much less sawdust generated by the thin kerf of a bandsaw. You get more out of a log.

Question, you hit a spike, ruining that blade....does hitting any metal, like a bullet ruin them? Or does a smaller nails, bullets just dull them but can still get some cuts. Thank you again, enjoy.

    Thank you, Joe! Those burned buildings were actually on my property… I have hit smaller nails before that didn’t kill the blade. I’ve never hit a bullet but I’d think the lead wouldn’t do too much damage to it. There are also bi-metal blades you can buy that with handle many nail hits without damage but they’re twice the cost.

    Thank you, John! He will have a licensed lumber grader come out and inspect and stamp his lumber so it can be accepted under his building permit. When a blade hits metal like that it can’t be resharpened.

    What's the moisture content like in burnt logs?

  • @NorthwestSawyer

    @NorthwestSawyer

    Pretty much the same as any log that’s been down for the same amount of time. The burning kills the trees but doesn’t do much to dry them.

    I watch a couple different showsof guys with sawmills and none of them ever use a metal detectors to check for metal. Seems to be a small investment compared to new saw blades. Whats ur opinion?

  • @NorthwestSawyer

    @NorthwestSawyer

    2 жыл бұрын

    Finding metal like that doesn’t happen that often. If I spent the time it took to thoroughly search each log I saw, I’d never get anything done. I do use a metal detector on reclaimed wood because it’ll typically be at the surface and easy to remove. If I detected metal in a log it could be very difficult and time-consuming to remove. When I hit metal in a clients log, they cover the cost of the blade.

    Would it be sensible to edge those two with wain down to the best width possible to make header materials for doors and windows? I mean a graded 2x8 or 2x10 is better than a fail is it not? Also how does that fire burning impact the sap? Does it set the stuff and make it hard on blades? Seems like it would at least set the areas below the burnt part much like a kiln sets the pitch/sap on other species.

    In the case of these logs, the fire didn’t get hot enough to affect the lumber. As for cutting them to smaller sizes, I’m sure he’ll modify them to what he needs. He actually has a smaller sawmill but can’t cut 16’ long.

    Happy Birthday Sir! Hope you had a great day! Question: when you price a job for someone for lumber, are you charging for the board foot, or adding incidentals like hitting a spike and replacing a blade. How does that all play out? Again, hope you had a great 50th!
