Big props for mentioning the "gatekeeping" aspect of the hate for browns. I think thats actually a huge part of it. I am not a big fan of browns, but I also dont feel like I need to post genuine vitriol online about them to newbies to the hobby. Memes are fun though.

I am genuinely surprised by the hate for the switch, lots of people when they first get into mechanical keyboards start with reds or browns. I did way back in the day. I found reds too mushy, I found blues sociopathic, browns to me felt just right. And I have used browns in one form or another since 2007. My dedicated work keyboard that IDGAF if it gets ruined is a Das Keyboard with MX browns. It is elitist and offputting to see so much vitriol and gatekeeping when someone looks to take the next step. If I say I like how browns feel and the community is rude, I wont be likely to go further in the community.

I remember the first time walking into a store and trying both mx browns and reds, and couldn't feel a difference at all. I was genuinely confused what the difference was even meant to be, so I think that being able to feel the tactility comes down to how familiar you are mechanical switches

I've been a long time Cherry Blue user and everyone hates on them and swears all other clickys are better. So I took the bait and bought a lot of the highly praised Box Jades and I was super disappointed. The moral of the story is that the 'gate keepers' have no idea wtf they are talking about.

Frankly speaking I believe RGB MX Browns are to blame for the hate. these are made from entirely diffrent material than classic cheries, which then gives a higher pitched sounding, unoticable tactile switch. I am currently using lubed, burnt in retooled browns and they feel just fine for typing, not too agressive on the hand coming from the lighter side of linear gang while having a very soft and sastifying topping out sound.

Its either that or people are hating it just because its popular. Very common amongst enthusiast groups. Linus did a blind test with the common keyboard switches and MX Browns won with flying colours even through a lot of the people there hated it, and of the ones that actually got it right, their attitude against the browns looks biased af.

Congrats on the partnership! I recently got a batch of MX browns from a used board I bought and I believe they're also hyperglides. Apparently the previous owner used the board for about 1.5 years and they were surprisingly smooth even stock. I'm more of a linear user, but I've been on the fence on trying to spring swap them, as well as lube and film them. In contrast, my main board is using L+F Retooled MX Reds, but I swapped the stock springs with CK x Tecsee 63.5g "Slow" Springs and they're now my favorite switch I've used so far. They're not the smoothest, but they sound so great! Prior to the mods, they were probably the scratchiest switch I've ever used. Last, I guess for me smoother doesn't always mean better. I've used incredibly smooth switches before (lubed Tealios) and I didn't like them. But again it all comes down to preference.

Whoa! A very thorough video revolving around a controversial switch. You're brave. For me personally, I've built a board with Kailh Pro Purple switches, which is subjectively unpopular light tactiles in the market. At first, I didn't like them that much, but they grew on me since I have found out that the tactility on Akko CS Ocean Blue switches are a tad too heavy for me (and to put on a perspective, I haven't tried Holy Panda just yet) Plus, the stem on Kailh Pro Purple has a longer pole compared to the one from Cherry MX Brown, thus frankenswitching with the Pro Purples would be interesting due to how a longer stem pole can affect the bottom out sound of a switch. So yeah. If you don't mind, I really recommend for you to try out the Kailh Pro Purple switch (and to replace the stems from Hyperglide Browns with the ones from Pro Purples, because people on Reddit had wrote about how they liked the said frankenswitch combo)

I've had the Cherry MX Brown for about a year in my Odin R3 and they have been great, after lubing - they really REQUIRE LUBING! Stock hyperglides are bleh, but the improvement of lubing is massive and I believe their improvement to be much greater than many other switches... ...anyways, now that I'm running prelubed Gateron Oil Kings, I don't bother with it anymore. But the browns will be my dependable backup switches.

Love the MX Browns. I'm trying different but keep coming back to what feels comfortable. I have above good hearing but I cannot say any of those so called scratchy or others matter to me. Too much else going on for me to be bothered. But feel is much more important. I could like a little more tactile bump & more weight while maintaining the quietness or low resonance. Do remember the board housing and material you choose makes difference. Drop in a layer of cork or rubber w/ a poly top plate layered w/ denim underneath. Options. What is the gentle next level above MX Bron in feel of a bump & defined activation point? I was thinking MX Tactile Gray!

From my experience retooled browns sound and feel better than what people consider to be the brown killers (pewters). Browns are a typist switch and are great for ergonomics. They're so hated that they're the most copied switch. Pretty much everyone offers a brown clone. Even Glorious copied them with the holy panda. The tac bump isn't meant to be an actual noticeable bump so much as enough of a bump to make you feel as if you bottomed out the key without actually doing so. It teaches you to type softer and not bottom out the key every time you press it saving pain in the hands. Browns are legit one of the best switches. After trying several others I can't find a switch that feels as comfortable.

I have been outfitting the medical coders around here with mech boards for a few years, you'd be amazed at how many there are who type constantly, all day, on membrane monstrosities. When I started doing this, I pretty much built with Reds unless the click was important, then it was OFC Blues. After a few didnt like the reds or blues, and wanted something that had the physical bump but not the click, well you can guess where that ended up. Since then, I generally bring 4 boards to demo - Reds, Blues, Browns, and my personal favorite heavy tactile with dual-click, which everyone hates but I love. (Kailh Box Whites are the current GOAT) Anyway, without the influence of all the BS that we have developed in the "community", when normal(ish) people who are doing a job want the best thing for that job, the overwhelming majority choose Browns.

Those are OEM profile PBT doubleshot keycaps. The stock ones used in Leopold keyboards are the same as these. You can also find them on Amazon under Mistel branding. If you want further info, I talked about them in my build video for my GF 😊

I'm 12 years brown, tried Aqua Zilents spring modded 55g from a friend, and the bump is too big. Don't like what is perceived as "default tactility" which is very big actually. Would Zealios 62g be considered a medium tactility switch?

I'd say there's minimal "breaking in" if you lube them first - you'd have to be using them stock to "break them in" before you can lube them.

I personally prefer clicky switches, and my favorite so far is the Razer Purple Switch. However, I can't use clicky ones at work, so I use MX Browns there. They are the best non-clicky switches I have tested so far. I don't like MX Reds (and all the light linears) at all; they are too easy to trigger and cause many unintentional keystrokes. MX Blacks are a little too tiring for my taste, but I wouldn't consider them bad. I have never tested any other non-clicky tactile switches apart from MX Browns (excluding cheap Chinese ones that I don't count). I also haven't tested any linear switches that fall in the MX Brown ballpark (between MX Red and MX Black).

Go for it hehe. I have some Boba U4Ts and I just did the Gazzew lube method where you just put a glob of lube on the rails and I think I might go back in and lube the rest of the stem, including the legs. I'm probably not a hyper tactile guy 😅

Personally I don't like browns as im a fairly heavy typer and play Rhythm games a lot. I seriously feel no bump at all when I play or type so it doesn't make sense for me to use them ( if I was going to use Tactile switches over my Gat black ink v2s ). As you said its all preference though and a friend loves them. I guess a lot of people don't recommend them becuase you can get much better switches for a bit more or even same price? I dunno. I personally don't understand the elitism in this hobby

I don't think that the hate comes from them being light tactiles, it comes from them being very light and the opposite of sharp. They drop only 7 grams of force and takes more than a millimeter; it's the lowest grams per unit of displacement force drop I've ever seen.

  • @CaloysKeyboards

I didn't ignore scratchiness. I factored it out of the reason that Browns specifically are hated since people love Blacks and those are scratchy too. Like I said in the video, the Browns need breaking in to be good. Breaking in reduces scratchiness hehe
