well, if you inspect closely, you will see that Tori actually uses ascending scales and descending scales with very similar patterns and not as creative as you think. And Mariah, great though she is, lacks accuracy and precision in some of her earlier performances (i.e debut and emotions era)

my name is i agree with ur opinion on tori's runs, but mimi? NO. she was inconsistent for her support and belts for a few times maybe because of her nodules but she was always buttery and accurate on them runs boo. i don't think famous opera singers would consider her the ingeborg hallstein of contemporary music if she's inaccurate...

Ingeborg Hallstein? That's a bit of an overstatement because Hallstein, as did most opera divas, utilise her headvoice to the fullest extent, while our girl mariah rarely did the same. The one singer in pop who resembles Ingeborg is Maureen McGovern, if u dont know her, check her out. Put all that aside, i thinh not until music box era did Mariah master melismas and runs/riffs. if you see some earlier performances, such as vanishing Snl live (not the flawless rehearsal but the more nervous official one) and vision of love at the Grammys (her first one ever!), some of her runs could be describe as not very refined, even sloppy. There are some reasons: her mask placement, her early stage fright and the fact that she was yet to develop her signature whisper tones, which means that the vocal folds are abducted and allow more air through, hence more ability to jump from one pitch to another at the cost of drying the throat. Her voice naturally is an obvious coloratura soprano, and she is really one of the most agile voices ever. When i say she lacks accuracy and precision in her earlier performances, i didint mean it as any indication of inferior abilities, i was only expressing what i think, and we all know that what she "lacks" then was only 100% confidence, all other things are result of her fright. Peace!

Dirox Mariah only sings riffs with precision in that whisper voice that she does. Tori can riff in her head voice as well as her mix and is far more precise. That lead the way run is way overhyped and she’s never done it live. She’s just a great studio riffer or was.

Please, Tori's runs'structure is wayyy more simple. They are either ascending runs through half an octave and then down to low note or descending ones that end with a nice falsetto or head voice note at the end. Her mix is good, but her placement prevents her from utilising that part of the voice. She always placed her upper belts in the mask but in a very forceful way, which is not wrong, just not optimal because that seriously impedes freedom and agility. Whisper voice-mariah trademark, is actually a method to make your voice more flexible as the vocal folds abducting would allow more air through and hence the voice is lighter, easier to do melisma (however that comes with the cost of drying your voice and causing hoarseness in the belting register over long period of time). She can also do amazing runs in the whistle register, which is far more difficult to control, as evident from jojo, an amazing riffer but cant control her whistles. And as far as musicality and creativity are concerned, mariah has virtually no match in pop

Wilson Canlas the vision of love one was live but the audio was dubbed (as were nearly all of her recorded live performances back then) because they wanted perfect sound quality without the noise of the crowd

It would take a longer time to get a perfect technique than that. Mariah started singing at very young age. She mainted her influences from that age. Whitney sure inspired Mariah. But Whitney didn't leave enough time for mariah to get influenced.

People sleep on Jazmine Sullivan- chick had crazy melisma at AGE 11 IN A SCHOOL PLAY! Like, damn. Check her out in "Home" if you haven't seen it. Jojo is also BAAAAD!! Her run she did in rehearsal with Boyz II Men is RIDICULOUS especially with how effortless it was. She was just like, "Oh, yeah. That's cool, lemme try." Special mention to Christina Aguilera- her runs are usually kinda sloppy and not so agile, but her first one here is fucking incredible!

You can find the interview which Queen Mariah wearing a red dress and this guy with glasses asking her connection and duet with Whitney Houston.

Avery is so agile but I feel like he just riffs and runs through entire songs and sometimes it takes away the meaning and musicality. Maybe i'm jealous 🤔😂

My favourites (in the right order) 1. Mariah 2. Beyoncé 3. Jessie J 4. Tori Kelly ❤️ I usually prefer the sound of Toris runs over Jessies, but Jessies are more difficult often. There were a bunch of singers who were also really impressive in this compilation, but I don't know most of them, so it's hard to rank them based on 1-2 videos 😀 | update : now, 2 years later I would definitely change my ranking. 1. Her agility isn't stiff, she's quite agile but not as agile as these vocalists...

The crazy thing about Mariah is that she can incorporate Pop, Soul/Gospel, and R&B into a single song switching between the genres. Plus, she goes from this full-on Gospel-ly belting to a very feminine transitions of falsetto.

Natalie Weiss literally has an entire video series entitled "Breaking Down the Riffs". She's incredible and can identify the musicality behind it. Not just cramming as many notes into one word.

If we’re solely basing it on runs and riffs like this video, then most of the ppl on this video are far better than Mariah but Mariah has the fastest transitions hands down. Whitney was better at dynamics imo! That’s just my opinion. Whitney’s Head voice couldn’t be touched! She may not have had the range that Mariah had but she was a master of control and precision!

Mariah is the greatest and the one who popularized it. She doesn't even try, she just does it.
