The Most Important Part of Your Story (The Aha Moment)

What's the MOST IMPORTANT part of your story? The "aha moment." I've been waiting forever to talk about this...and the day has come! In this video, we're diving into your character's realization and transformation... and how to leave a lasting impact on your audience. This is YOUR moment - the reason why you wanted to write this story in the first place! I'm also going to show you examples of the aha moment from some of my favorite stories, and what makes them so emotional.

My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. I really have to thank you as an amateur writer. I'm writing my first book and this lessons your are giving me means a lot. Before watching it I didn't think too much about the psicology behind any specific action of the main character. I was so stupid that I thought people will easily understand by themselves. That's not true at all. You need to give the bad and good moments to the protagonist to show the reasons behind any of his/her action and mood. Thank you really. I'm not and English native person and I decided to write my book in English to improve my language skills. Moreover writing in this language I discovered how much I love it and also how good and satisfying it is to write a novel in this language. I will keep watching your videos to improve and became at least a decent story teller and writer. 😊

I drank champagne with kings and queens. The politicians praised my name. But those are someone else's dreams. The pitfalls of the man I became. For years and years I chased their cheers; the crazy speed of always needing more. But when I stop and see you here I remember who all this was for! And from now on these eyes will not be blinded by the lights. From now on what's waited 'til tomorrow starts tonight! It starts TONIGHT! And let this promise in me start like an anthem in my heart. From now on. From now on. FROM. NOW. ON.

For the longest time, something in my story didn't quite work. I couldn't put my finger on it. And now everything clicks. But cecause I can't ever seem to fit my stories in one book I'm struggling with making the 3 act structure work when it comes to a series. Should I have 1 little character arc per book, each with its own aha moment, fear, misbelief etc, all part of a bigger character arc? How do I make the last one aha moment the ultimate one? I have so many questions lol. If you could try and answer this or give gips in a future video that would be great :)

I think this is my favorite Abbie video. Not just because I was - again - moved to tears by "It's a Wonderful Life" (even the colorized version), and not just because you uncovered another movie worth seeing. No. It's because I finally clicked on what flaw and misbelief my character has - suspicion of others' motives - that in this story will be uncovered by his mistrust of someone he should trust. In fact, I think his conversion will also convert - or at least weaken - the funny yet dangerous "unreliable mentor" in the book. Thanks again, Abbie.

Hey Abbie I love your videos they are very informative and inspiring! I want to draw a manga (japanese comic) someday and they typically consist of multiple story arcs. Should there be aha moments in every arc concluding to the final aha moment?
