The Most Important Element of Jazz Improvisation?

Музыка

Did you know that a few wrong notes played with great timing over a tight groove will often go by unnoticed by many, whereas the opposite, a great melodic line played with bad timing will be apparent even to most musically uneducated ears?
In this lesson I demonstrate a musical experiment to show you how and why RHYTHM is the first and foremost element most ears perceive and often the ultimate factor that determines how you rate a performance. After proving this point, I discuss 5 practice tips to help you strengthen your rhythm and timing.

I read somewhere that Basie's "Lil' Darlin' is one of the hardest tunes to play well, because it's so close in tempo to the human heartbeat, and it requires real concentration . Jonathon Kreisberg does amazing things with time, particularly his versiion of "Caravan". Thanks Richie!

Great lesson, Richie! There's no doubt that the second example was much better and I might argue that I heard some John Scofield in there.

So many great points in your lesson maestro! And I can see you tried really hard to play those right notes with the wrong beats, it takes time of practicing as well! (Just a bad joke of me.) I wish you all the best. Saludo de B.A.

If playing ahead or behind the time is a commonplace then what is the definition of "good time"?

  • @RichieZellon

It depends on the style of music and tempo. In jazz we play slightly ahead of the beat when using swing 8th notes. If playing in 16th notes we play right on the beat or what you're calling "good time".
