The most important concept in ALL of poker: EV | GTOx ABCs

Ойындар

At some point, you’ve likely heard the conventional wisdom that beginners and players at lower stakes should not learn GTO. However, since GTO defines fundamentally sound strategies, this advice is actually paradoxical. In this video we explore how GTO can and should be learned by players at all stakes and of all experience levels, by focusing on the core function of a solver, which is to maximize EV. As the old saying goes, it's better to have GTO and not need it, then to need it and not have it…

    Excellent content. You said the only thing that changes with an unbalanced opponent is the cutoff point, but that’s not the only thing. Another thing is you wouldn’t need a mixed strategy (I.e., in regards to bluff catching, you could either fold or call all the time with the bluff catchers, as opposed to mixing the strategy as per the solver). Another point in favor of using GTO, even when you “know” the villain isn’t bluffing, is that in real life competent players won’t have a “fixed defect,” but will be adjusting their strategies based on what you do.

Also, how to apply in real world the rough gto strategy after you have reviewed the hand through solver before after conceiving general ranges of opponents and yours,e.g. Counting the rough amount of defending frequency and bluff catching frequency needed with exact combos

    Every player, regardless of stake, should incorporate solvers into their study. There are 3 key reasons for this: 1. You understand optimal strategies for when you progress through the stakes, permitting the ability to play effectively against good players 2. You recognise when your opponent is utilising a strategy which deviates from a solver solution and can easily adjust to maximise EV 3. You can print money 😋

    Theres something i don't understand about GTO poker strategies. In Rock Paper Scissors when player A plays balanced (make each move 33%of the time randomly) it doesn't matter what player B does, both players have 0 EV. Is that also true in poker? Because most people on youtube seem to say, that if Player A plays GTO Poker, Player B needs to play GTO Poker too or player Bs strategy will have negative EV. Wich one is it? Or do i misunderstand something profoundly?

    so if we take the simplified strategy of bluff catching any A with a diamond or heart. im not sure i understand the significance of the Ah vs Ac. is it that unblocking potential bluffs with Ax of clubs is more valuable than blocking the one value combo of ATcc where as having the A of diamonds gives us the best of both worlds. thanks for all the great content

    @@FindingEquilibrium thanks. my general framework for bluff catching is that i look at our hand strength, our blockers to villains value range and if we unblock villains bluffing range. in a polarized spot like this where villains value range is very narrow the importance of our hand strength goes down, blockers to villains value range goes up and unblocking bluffs is important but generally less important than blocking value. so if we took a combo like AA. we would likely call AdAc first, then Ad,As/AcAh etc, and call least (if at all) with AsAh. in a less polarized spot where villains value range is much wider the importance of our hand strength goes up, blockers to value goes down and unblocking bluffs becomes more significant. this helps me in game to adjust to different opponents e.g. vs a tighter player who bluffs less often we can just call our best bluff catchers and vs a looser bluff heavy opponent we can maybe call all our bluff catchers and of course anything in between. does this sound reasonable to you? thanks for your response and again really enjoy the content!

    Isn't it GTO that if our opponent is underbluffing at all it means we get to fold all of our bluff catchers without being exploitable since bluff catchers are 0EV calls against an optimal bluff frequencies and immediately become -EV once villain is underbluffing?

  • @pokerandphilosophy8328

    @pokerandphilosophy8328

    3 жыл бұрын

    This is only true in a idealized toy game, on the river, where all of our bluff catchers win again all of villain's bluffs and lose against all of their value bets. Even in that case, bluff catchers only have exactly zero EV when they don't have any blocking effect on Villain's value or bluffing ranges. In more realistic river situations, when Villain is underbluffing only moderately, there still may be bluff catchers that are +EV for us to bluff catch with when they block part of their value range, unblock part of their bluffing range, and/or beat more of their bluffs. (In normal river situations, some of our "bluff catchers" lose to some of villain's "bluffs").

  • @FindingEquilibrium

    @FindingEquilibrium

    3 жыл бұрын

    The truly indifferent hands will fold and the +EV bluffcatchers may as well depending on how much villain is underbluffing. However, as a practical matter it may be hard to know how much villain is underbluffing and where your own cutoff points are. Also, in theory, villain can always adjust.

    It is usually a mistake to use MDF on the river. Sometimes on some river runouts solver always fold when checked first and villain always bluff with all hands with no showdown value. However, you can use MDF if you consider all possible river runouts and in that case, on some runouts, you will call way more than MDF and in some cases, you will always fold when you check first. Also using MDF on a certain flop is really a mistake. On some flops, you defend less than MDF and on other flops, you defend more. Overall it is MDF but not on any specific flop. That is why using MDF analysis is a mistake except when defending PF.

  • @knowlestoo

    @knowlestoo

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, MDF really comes out of toy games when learning GTO at a level you can sit down and calculate yourself. Switch to the real game and the size quickly explodes beyond what you can calculate by hand and, when solvers do the calculations for us they show us that maximising EV means paying very little to no attention to MDF. It's like a side show, you've got to defend enough but EV isn't linear enough to simply turn into a frequency based off bet sizes.

  • @pokerandphilosophy8328

    @pokerandphilosophy8328

    3 жыл бұрын

    Finding Equilibrium makes it very clear at 17:00 that the MDF formula can't be applied precisely in most cases, even on the river, since players seldom have a perfectly polarized range against a perfectly consensed range.

  • @FindingEquilibrium

    @FindingEquilibrium

    Actually GTO will be most profitable when you don't have any information on your opponent. If you have good information about a weakness of your opponent, it would be more profitable to deviate from the baseline GTO strategy to take advantage of the weakness. My point in the second half of the video was that even in that scenario, the principles we learn from studying GTO still are applicable.

  • @ericpetersen4185

    @ericpetersen4185

    Ah that makes sense, so GTO is a baseline for +EV across all players in holdem, it’s nice to know the +EV spots but also nice that NL holdem will never be “Solved” like limit holdem, that’s what makes the game so fun, if it was “Solved” then it takes all the thinking aspects out of the game, in from MN and limit games are dying and spread limit games are in the rise because MN doesn’t allow NL unless it’s a tournament

    It is pretty funny that still in 2020 people view GTO as an inferior way to approach the game. That kind of logic is somewhat comparable to thinking that our planet is flat or denying the fact that 1+1=2, the possible comparisons for an example are quite endless. It takes a huge amount of ignorance and stupidity to go against facts that have been proven with different schools of science. GTO is a way of life

  • @FindingEquilibrium

    @FindingEquilibrium

    3 жыл бұрын

    This is funny because I've actually thought of people that totally reject GTO as poker's version of flat earthers. In fairness, I think part of the issue is just a miscommunication, where when people hear "GTO" they assume it means memorizing sims and applying the strategies indiscriminately regardless of what the opponent is doing. But I think anyone that actually has a good understanding of theory doesn't actually play that way.

    This video gets at the "trick" to GTO play. You literally can't play GTO by memorizing solutions that you can't compute in a lifetime. You have to find a human connection to the math to execute it. Linus Love said that almost precisely.
