I miss the old days! The railroads were so colorful and no graffiti! Now the railroads today are boring.

I started taking pictures of trains in 1985 and quit about ten years ago for just those reasons 👍

Maybe the most colorful period in Western railroading, with all of the different pre-merger paint schemes and inter-railroad cooperation. Great video!!

My Dad and others were responsible for gaining government ok for the merger. The personnel pool was deep and the HQ in Saint Paul had a succession plan of former Burlington executives

Well, the Milwaukee Road wasn't too happy about the merger. Although it was holding it's own out west. The management of the Milwaukee deferred it's maintaince of track and equipment to show good profit to stockholders. They wanted to merge with the Union Pacific but they declined due to the shoddy shape of Milwaukee's track. That may be an ok description. I'm sure there is more.

I wonder how UP snatched the Western Pacific out from under the BN? If there was a missing component to the BN merger, the WP would be it.
