Honestly you didn’t use it right. You get a ton of smoky flavor if you cook it lower at first (just the smoke setting), and then higher when it reaches an internal temp of around 115 degrees. You’ll get extremely dark chicken with red coloring on the meat. It’s very juicy and it comes out flavorful. You have to give it time to smoke. My chicken takes a little over 4 hours and crispy darker skin. Also use better pellets. Signature blend is weak. Try hickory or cherry pellets
I agree with your opinions GWD. I never grill on my pellet grill. It only smokes. Everything else goes on the charcoal! If I won that grill ribs would be the first thing to go on! Got 2 racks in the freezer!
Great review! I go back and forth between my pellet and my off-set smoker, depending on what I'm cooking.
Awesome review. Love how you have it broken down to chapters. Well made, good job GWD and family! We love our Traeger. It is just my husband and myself. When we cook hot and fast steaks, we place them close to the front or the back then flip fat side facing out and then in until desired temp. ✌️😁
I just upgraded to that model and I love it. When you did this review you didn't say anything about the smoke flavor in the meat which is one of the biggest reasons to use it. The smoke flavor is totally there every time and I think people who were interested would want to know that

Yeah it seems like he is rating it as an overall utility grill, rather than just a smoker. I would think anybody who is going to spend 1k on a smoker has another cooker for just grilling.

I have the Pro 780 for over 3 years and Traeger Pellets do not give smoke flavor like other pellets. we use 780 almost everyday and no issues.

Great thorough review! My current grill is great at searing and gets nice and hot, but has no smoke component, so sounds like this would be a good compliment. Brisket would likely be first up, although those ribs looked really good!

Been a Traeger user for years and agree 100% with your review. Flavor is always great but I throw the cast iron in there for steaks. That said, mines getting pretty old and could use a nice, new, bigger one to smoke my next brisket.

Quality Pellets definitely matter for much more flavor, burns hotter and less ash build up for easier cleanup. Also you need to do a prep cook the meat at much lower temps to get more of the smoke flavor before the actual cooking. For steaks you need to smoke it in the traeger then finish it in cast iron on a gas grill to get the sear.

You really don't. I smoke steaks for about an hour then crank it to 450 and sear them for 3-4 minutes per side and they're always perfect.
I love that you’re doing this! Been cooking on a travel size GMG for 3 years and would love and upgrade! I would have to cook some pork belly burnt ends for the first cook and wash down with some eagle rare! Cheers!

Great idea to do reviews of other grills. I’m a BGE guy all day, but often wondered if Traeger would have been a better option based on the connectivity, temperature control and use of pellets instead of charcoal. I’d take a free traeger, but definitely wouldn’t purchase one. Just a suggestion on the review in general, maybe consider rating the individual parts of each grill : setup, use, each food you cooked, etc. I think it’s tough to give an overall rating when there are parts that are better than the grill as a whole Looking forward to seeing more reviews. I’d be interested to see some Weber reviews and see how gas holds up in the mix

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 NIV ROMANS 10:9-11 “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame” Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”” Luke 19:10 God wants us to believe in His One and Only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, who died for our sins :D When we truly believe in our hearts that Jesus is the Son of God, who died for our sins so we could have eternal life with God, we are saved from the eternal fire and have eternal life in Christ Jesus!! 💖 May God bless you all! 🕊💞

Love Traegers! Love the new features over my old Pro 34. Traeger gets a lot of heat for being so easy but honestly for so many people, Traeger has open the possibility of smoked meals that otherwise wouldn’t have ventured to buy or cook on a stick smoker. First meal would be smoke cream cheese and 3-2-1 ribs.

I just purchased my first Traeger and went straight to the 780. Doing my homework to get the smoke flavor you must drop the temp down to get the smoke flavor to your food. I believe you can get the grill and get crispy you just have to know how to use it for what you are doing

Great review! I would smoke only my second brisket ever. The first one was a request from my then pregnant wife in 2005(our first daughter). We lived in a 4 story townhouse, 5 blocks North of Wrigley on Kenmore. My wife decided she was pregnancy craving smoked brisket, seemed an odd choice, so it was off to Paulina Meat Market for a brisket. You have to understand, the 4th floor was storage and our rooftop deck. Where my 3 burner Weber Genesis GAS grill was located, looking over 4 sets of EL tracks and Graceland Cemetery. I got my recipe, my rub, removed a grill grate, wedged the brisket on the grill(it may have been hanging off a bit on one side) and started the cooking process. Quickly changing out foil packages of wet wood chips probably 3 to 4 times per hour on the flavor bars and following my recommended recipe for my size of brisket. This process went on for at least 13 or 14 hours, walking up 2 or 3 flights of stairs each time to check on the temperature, smoke and wood chips. Finally, it was done and as it rested, all I hoped for was a smoke ring. When the moment came, SUCCESS, smoke ring, somewhat juicy, but not too shabby for my first time and on a Weber Gas Grill. Now for the opportunity to meet the craving need of my pregnant wife. I think she ate like maybe a piece and a half and said and I quote, “it’s delicious. Nice job. I think I want something sweet.”🤯 2015 moved to Mokena and I’m a lump charcoal guy and my Weber 26 inch kettle grill. Based on your review about smoking meats on a Traeger grill, I’d definitely revisit 2005 on Kenmore Ave. and give a brisket another shot, as a reminder to my wife as well as relive that story with our 2 daughters. Heck! Maybe she can finish 2 pieces this time.
