I am an Icelander who have not been walking at all... used to do it as a kid out in the farm but nothing more than that. This spring i started walking and googleing about hiking and hiking tips and found you. I booked myself on a hiking trip to go the Laugavegur trail with a group. It had included a guide, sleeping in huts and a driver who drove our stuff between cabins every day. Well money spent. (Reccomend that for everyone ;) ) So I walked this way probably a week later then you with my 8year old! While i was there i got a snapchat memory since last year. In that memory i said that my hip said stop and would only let me walk 1km(0,6miles) since I had worn myself out by walking 6km(3,7miles) 2 days earlier! And now I was hiking 55km(34mile) trail. And some part of it is thanks to you ❤️ You inspire me to live my dreams rather than just dreaming at home 😊❤️ I am kinda sad that I could not meet you while you were here in Iceland. But hopefully I will meet you on a random hike one day 😊❤️ Thank you for everything

Such a very kind thing to say!
That first night made a compelling case for a double walled tent! Might be part of the reason I never see single walls in the Canadian Rockies. That weather feels a little too familiar ☺️

@@layne4376 In one of her other videos she said this tent was not the best choice for this trip but still looks like a very cool and unique place to go hike and visit. Looks like at 8:10 there are a lot of 4 season dome mountaineering tents but definately anything designed for higher winds would be ideal.
It amazes me that the landscape can be so stark and barren, yet so full of beauty.

Great minds buddy. You actually said the term for that in a roundabout way. When I was in Deadhorse Alaska at Prudhoe Bay, during winter solstice, the sun never came up while I was there for one week. But with a sky full of stars and moon, and the northern lights going crazy, what unfolds is a snowy, barren, windblown landscape of stark beauty.
Dixie, I've been following you since the AT and IMO this is one of the best videos you've ever produced. Absolutely amazing. I applaud you 👏 stay safe and wild kiddo!! Blessings 🙌

Yay!!! FINALLY - Iceland here we go!!!
From the shaky camera around Springer all the way to this. I've enjoyed every minute you have shared with us. Your video work is absolutely incredible. For entirety of your work, I thank you. It's all been wonderful. One of my favorite parts is when you talk to critters. ;)
Whoa - Dixie! That little blue tent of yours looked like a hanky blowing in the wind. To say that those views were magnificent is a vast understatement. Enjoy your trip and thanks so much for sharing.
Wow Dixie, I feel like I just walked out of a movie theatre!, The videography on this piece is amazing and I can’t wait to see more!!!! This trail is breathtaking just watching it on “the Big Screen :) “ I can’t imagine how it feels to actually experience it!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
LOL . . .a thru hiker says: *"excuse the mess"* inside her tent. Not too many hikers have a pot with as many miles on it.
Rimsky - Korsakov´s Sheherezade seems the right thing for this epic landscape. But the icing on the cake was the bumblebee hovering slomo over some flowers when the theme goes quiet. I’m impressed by the editing.
It is crazy how you can run into people in the most random corners of the world....I mean, to me just the fact that we were in Iceland at the same time was crazy! I mean, what are the odds?!! I know I never ran into you, I was mostly in the south and the westfjords, but still, so cool how these things happen. We also ran into my mom's dentist in Iceland, I mean...talk about random I'm glad you go to see the volcano, I went the day before they closed it, such a treacherous trail, all those rocks, but sooo worth it. The good thing for other hikers is that during those days that the trail was closed they started fixing it and it wasn't nearly as bad as when my sister and I went
That was as enjoyable for me as anything of yours I’ve ever watched. I’m really looking forward to the next two!
I visited Iceland 5 years ago and I'm pretty sure I came home with a piece of the landscapes there embedded in my soul. It truly is "otherworldly" and an incredibly awe-inspiring, special place. Thanks for sharing this trip, I'm sure it was a ton of work to film in the wind & weather! Seeing those gorgeous landscapes make me a little misty-eyed ❤️
Oh. I remember sleeping up there at Hrafntinnusker in a 4 season double-walled tent and being scared shitless that it’ll blow away. Dixie, you are a brave woman indeed :)

I kept wondering if that would be a good time to institute just a bivy bag over the sleeping bag and pad.
I think I would have just pulled the tent down and rolled up like a blue burrito to sleep! For Iceland, I think you need the 4 season Hilleberg Nammatj 2 or the GT model for the weather and wind to keep you safe. What a fearsome racket in the wind!...you could write a song! I saw a video about a guy camping in Scotland who went out to rearrange the stars and whish! Gone with the wind! His tent blew up with wind, ripped out all the stakes and with all his gear and his Garmin in it, rolled right down the steep mountainside in the dark and snowing night! He was in a pickle!! Don't tie your Garmin to the tent!

Dixie, look at it this way, no mosquitos! Great video. Hope you had fun.
That's so cool how u met those hikers who you met years ago somewhere else in the world. That was a really interesting thought of how the same people can interact multiple times and not even know, and it reminded me of how I think when I'm backpacking. Some of the most profound realizations have come to me while out in the Backcountry either hiking or staring into the fire or waiting to go to sleep. That's my favorite part, when I have so much time alone to just think, I end up getting to know myself at a deeper level. I really enjoy your videos Dixie, you have done so much for the hiking community by posting videos we can all enjoy and learn from! So thank you! Btw that electric guitar medley was a nice touch 👌

I randomly met a guy in Prague that I hung out with for some days a few weeks before. I initially met him in Florence, Italy. I gave it a lot of thought but I concluded that the odds werent that small. We were both into visiting cultural cities and as tourists we were a lot more likely to visit public spaces like city squares and downtown areas. This is basically the same. Hard core trailers are bound to do this tour some time in their lives, and you can also scratch the winter season off the list which narrows it down. It's still not likely but more likely than you would think.

Kind of unrelated, but while I was leading a boys camp trip on the Maine section of the AT, I ran into a hiker named Baked Potato. Man, that guy was such a gem. He was just hanging out by the end of the hundred mile wilderness with no backpack or anything, and we got to hang out with him for about two days. He captivated the minds of my campers with amazing stories and an impressive knowledge of Pink Floy. Low and behold, I'm watching one of dixie's recent videos ("Backpacking lessons not learned on the internet") and the entire prompt for the video was a text thread between dixie and Baked Potato! Turns out theyre good friends! I feel lucky to have met him and thoroughly enjoyed hanging out for those two-ish day with such a legend of a guy.

I love Rachmaninov but Scheherazade was especially perfect here. I've learned so much from your videos. Thank you.
I can't stress enough how impressed I am with your cinematography. Those are words of art. Details like the camera being blow over on the tripod just add to the experience.
Great video, again. The old saying, "it's a small world", is true. I'm 64 and have crossed paths with acquaintances from decades ago. And, in the most unlikely of places. Of course we couldn't remember each other's names, and it always starts with fleeting glances from the corners of the eye. Thinking, man he looks familiar...it can't be..."Ahem, uh, you didn't happen to have done some logging in Alaska back in the 70s, Ice Bay? Logging camp?" Yup it was him! It's a very emotional reunion, actually. No, we didn't cry, you cried.
Fantastic footage! I'm really lichen the landscape there! 🤭 You're livin' the dream, girly-girl, fer sure.
From 'Hey, yaaaaa'll' to some very promising vid and cinematography. This channel is maturing..
Wonderful! Fantastic video of a beautiful trail. Makes me smile to see your single skin tent though. As a Northern latitudes hiker I’ve rather envied the folks I see in the States using single skin tents or cowboy camping. Not up North! Up here you need double walls, strong pegs and thermal underwear!😀
Dixie, I have been so looking forward to these videos since I heard you say you were in Island, I lived there for two years ago, 40 years ago. The winds are no joke, we considered a day at 35 knots, a calm day. Island, the land of fire and Ice is beautiful. I hope you enjoyed your time there, I sure did in 79-80.. Hail & Bless...
Gooood evening from central Florida! Hope everyone has a great night!
Rimsky-Korsakov "Scheherazade" - I love it! Both the classical and the rock versions work great! Beautiful videos! I think Iceland is now on my bucket list. Can't wait to see the video from the volcano.

I love those serendipitous moments! In the early 80s I was a Wisconsin Punk from Madison. I’d gone off on tour as a roadie for a punk band…we were on Big Sur at 7am and decided to drive down to a remote beach, where we ran into a group of Madison punks chilling on the beach. Totally random, half a continent away, no clue they were out there at that random beach.
Dyneema Tents in Island or Norway is basically an risky death trap. I wrote an article on this. They are not made for 4 season, blizzards or rainy/misty weather.
My daughter “Pixie” just arrived in reykjavik today to do the trail! So happy I get to see the trail through your eyes first. Happy Trails!
Hi! It is such a pleasure to see you on my home turf here in Icalend. I have done this hike many times and it is always different and it depends on the weather. You were not very lucky with the weather like the rest of us Icelanders during the entire summer(well we say "Thats life!".

I would love a gear list for the Laugavegur Trail!
That's a pretty cool video! My wife and I did the trail a few weeks ago. It was our first overnight / "long distance" trail. We weren't allowed to sleep at Hrafntinnusker (the windy place in this vid), because the warden had to close the campsite due to too extreme weater, so we hiked all the way to Alftavatn instead. The trail was an amazing experience! Your videos (equipment reviews, tip, tricks etc.) helped us quite a lot in getting ready for the trail, so thanks a lot!
Note to self…use really long tent stakes!
I had that happen to me this year. . . . in 2019 I hiked with a couple on the PCT northbound for 5 days in Northern California and then this year I was doing a little 300 mile practice hike and was sitting at a picnic table on the PCT just south of Big Bear and that same couple walk up and sat at the table and it took us a few seconds to remember where we met. What a fond memory. They were both university geology professors and I love geology.
Wow! What an epic trip!
Your poor tent, poor you in that wind. Worth it! Absolutely some of the most stunning views. What a trip, stay safe
