I ran there once back in '73 and turned 10.7 in my '57 Ford Custom 2dr sedan E/G. Ford de-stroked 427 FE engine. I still have the car and now it does high 9's at Epping NH, New England Dragway.

@@r.d.riddle2068 I forgot to mention that I had to have the 330 FE truck crank cross-drilled for proper oil supply. Jorgensen Machine Company in South Windsor CT did all my engine machining work. They also ordered the TRW forged pistons and rods for de-stroking the 427 engine.

The gassers were at the heart of early drag racing, and we owe a debt of thanks to the genius who conceived of the class. By 1959, gassers dominated at smaller drag strips across the country. The first time I saw an A/GS in action that year I was standing near the finish line at Midway drag strip near Dallas. When the car blew by me at 126 mph, I saw a small object bouncing down the track behind it. It passed by so close to me that I could almost have reached out and caught it. The cap had blown off the breather tube of the Olds engine during the run. Lord, what fun that was.

Were all of the vehicles going sideways down the track? I know that happens in snow, crossed Mount Shasta that way. All of the vehicles have that same slide to them. Just a weird feeling. The lens of the camera must be severely distorting the cars on the track. Great vintage video but the distortion just kills it.

Man does this bring back memories. I'm 70 now but in my teens we used to camp outside the tracks in Ok, Texas and I remember sleeping in the ditch outside Liberal Kansas drags. We didn't have any money for motels. I used to live 10 miles from Amarillo Dragway and the World Finals were the best..A shout out to Don Garlits. We'd see him at different tracks and always talked to him asking dumb questions but he was always a cool guy. He'd have a set of heads on the tailgate of his Dodge pickup working on them and you could talk to him. Thanks for the gasser memories guys. 👍

The little color yellow. That's is how we raced when we had a big block versus a smaller one. In the sixties big blocks came alive about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way down the drag strip. That is when the best range of torque kicked in. I ran a 7-liter ford and got my butt kicked many times until I reached 60 mph and then the big block would kick in. hoo rah The only car that kicked our butts all the time (GTO's, Chevells, Vetts, Hemis's) was a Sunbeam Alpine tiger. He would pull away from us like we were standing still at any speed. That is what you get with a 2,700 pound car versus 4,000 lbs. I do miss building those cars.

Was a Chrysler "line mech" in late sixties. a great time!!! Tho then and for years was into Austin Healeys and not drags racing. (younger bro had a 426 wedge, A/FX) built by me. Early 70's had a 4600 lb 66 Chry 300 440, .60 overbore, cam , adj rockers, alum 2) 4 manifold, elect ign, headwork. Freeway killer!!! At speed you could watch the gas gauge move down!!! Honestly!!! I grew up in the late 50's and into the muscle cars of the 60's. I had a good job and made better than the average wage in those days. I bought a two-year-old 1964 corvette roadster in 1966 327 original 340 hp with added speed equipment. We raced on the country roads out of town for $5.00 or $10.00. Some of the best years of my life. Got drafted into the Vietnam war and three years later when I came home nobody was street racing anymore. I went on and discovered flying. Sold the corvette and learned to fly. Another best times of my life again. I am 78 years old now. Lost my medical card to fly due to high blood pressure after 15 years. Today I have a 63 Corvette roadster with a 2010 Corvette LS 1 engine and 4L60 auto trans. I think I may sell the car this summer and say goodbye to hotrods!

In the mid to late 70s I had a 69 Road Runner with a 383 it wasnt the fastest thing out there ,but damn it felt good. It wasnt in bad shape and primer grey ,I only paid 800 bucks for it LOL . probably cost a bit more today .

I'm 77 now; enjoyed running my D/G Fordrolet in Texas and California during the sixties. The sport was much more fun back then, IMHO, because there were few sponsors, making it mostly a contest of owner/driver ingenuity. I believe the sport became diluted when we lost the "run what you brung" practice of shadetree mechanics which was supplanted by professionals who had trick factory stuff we little guys couldn't get. At some tracks we had flagmen and very rudimentary timing equipment (speed only; no ET). Great fun.
