The fact she didn't do anything particularly bad to earn a bad end is what made the episode scary to me the first time I saw it. Stories where the monsters/ghosts/villains don't seem bound by any rules have always been the scariest to me because the lack of rules makes them harder to predict and control.

This reminds me of a horror story that I read in school. A young girl visits a witch in her village to ask for a love potion. Instead the witch gives the girl a potion to make them switch bodies. It isn't like their spirits switched. The witch and the girl did complete mirror transformations. I don't remember the name of the story, but I remember that the witch said something like, "Now I will steal the heart of the handsome young man" (paraphrasing) and she leaves the girl (now in an old woman body). Nostalgic.

Kyle Lemke what’s special weird is that the whole dress thing feels deliberately built into the episode only to not affect the plot at all. Like you’d be expecting this to pay off, eg the way the friend knows real from fake Janice is the outfits and there’s a kind of moral about vanity or greed somewhere in there. But nope, they make a whole running thread about a costume change that has no relevance at all!

I think what I found the most disturbing about this one was that Janice would drown in the well after hours of exhaustion from swimming. Torture that leads to death, especially a gruesome one like drowning, always affects me more than something more sudden, AND the fact that Sharon basically murdered her friend. I think those things are a little more sinister, personally. But there's definitely a few "trapped" episodes I thought were executed well. Loved Super Specs.

The end was so dark. I thought how terrible it was that the girl trapped in a “chameleon’s” body was going to drown in the pool. And honestly, thinking now, the lizard girl probably wound up transforming the real girls parents into lizards with all her comrades she snatched up from the well. It’s really open ended to assume even more innocents would share the same fate as the girl who got transformed into a “chameleon.”

You call out Janice not deserving the comeuppance, but, honestly, I think that's what makes it stand out. Janice becomes more of an audience stand-in. It's easier to imagine ourselves in her predicament because she's relatable as opposed to someone we we want to see punished. So when she ends up transformed and left in the well, it's twice as scary. Love this episode. Glad people spoke up for it, because it's definitely my favorite AYAotD.

Death stories are often transition stories. Based on your analysis, I'd guess the story is about Janice's anxiety over transitioning into an adult. The lizard device is probably asking, "Will I have feelings like I used to?" Horror stories leave all that pretty ambiguous, because even though we don't change, we also do change, for better and for worse. Another transition story like this is Cronenberg's Scanners. Great video! Thank you.

I started rewatching some of your videos again. My brother and I watched all the Are You Afraid of The Dark episodes. It actually took a lot to unnerved us so while we watched we were rarely scared. Though i haven't seen it in years, I do remember we were actually at least somewhat creeped out by the Midnight Madness episode (if I didn't mess that up, it's the silent film episode). The long fingers curling around door frames was genuinely creepy. I would love it if you ever covered that. I WILL say I was probably unimpressed by this episode, but actually respect it more after watching your breakdown. (I do remember not feeling she deserved her fate) Good writing makes up for a multitude of sins though. So if you have never watched it, Masters of Horror: Family (starring George Wendt) is actually a brilliant piece of writing/screenplay. I highly recommend that episode (they were NOT all created equal). I am sorry I wrote so much, but I do enjoy your trips down memory lane.

Yeah, Betty Ann loved the 'unhappy ending' stories, more so than any other original member. Funnily enough, if I remember correctly (from two other episodes, the early one with the vampire neighbors (featuring the fabulously named Dayday) and the one with the evil camera) she rarely if ever used the asshole victim trope. The characters were usually normal kids who didn't deserve what happened to them. While that's admirable, in universe that does have to make you wonder a bit about Betty Ann herself...

Sometimes bad things happen to people for no real reason and not because they deserve it... but still that's uncharacteristically dark for what's supposed to be a children's show. It's more satisfying to me when there's actual stakes because there's no suspense if the protagonists have impenetrable plot armor, but still... not a fan of when it ENDS as a hopeless situation for a completely innocent character.

I suggested this episode way back when you first covered AYAOTD. It really stood out to me as a kid as one of the most horrifying "kid gets screwed over" endings the show ever had. I watched it recently though and just kept going "d'awwww" at the little lizard bleps.

It's like calling every type of bug an insect. All insects are bugs, not all bugs are insects. An ant: insect. A spider: Not an insect, its an arachnid. A centipede: Not an insect, its an arthropod.

Ya its possible they couldnt find a chameleon in time for filming, and didnt want to edit everyone's lines. Lazy directing, but it's a kids show so somewhat excusable.

Interesting that you noted the type of story each of the Midnight Society told. I never realized the show went into that much detail on those characters, as I watched a few episodes here and there, but never a bunch in a row. Good to know they made the recurring characters consistent.

I was a huge Sister Sister fan, at the time, though, & props to you PushingUpRoses, for name-dropping the series. It is incredibly underrated!! Yes, this was one messed up episode, & lol, I'm not surprised that they called an iguana, a chameleon.

I remember Eerie Indiana being pretty popular amongst my generation in the UK in the 90s, and watched it quite a lot back then (Channel4 on weekends and school hols I think?), and Goosebumps (on CBBC), but have to say I don't think I ever heard of Are You Afraid Of The Dark? back then. Or was it not on terrestrial in the UK?
