The Most DANGEROUS & Least Effective Earwax Removal Tool EVER! | Video Endoscope Review

The Most DANGEROUS & Least Effective Ear wax Removal Tool EVER! | Video Endoscope Review. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, reviews a video endoscope designed for earwax removal.
Website: www.DrCliffAuD.com
Clinic Website: www.AppliedHearingAZ.com
There is no shortage of earwax removal tools on the market. You have Eardrops, Q-Tips, car keys, crazy corkscrew tools, and even vibrating suction devices. But perhaps the most intriguing device that you can find online is the video endoscope. A video endoscope is a camera with a light that lets you look into dark areas, like your ear canal, so you can see what's inside. Some companies have added wire loops to the end of these devices so you can attempt to remove your own earwax.
Advertisements from these companies show a party-like atmosphere of young adults removing their own earwax with this tool. Since these companies clearly indicate that the self removal of earwax using a video endoscope is safe, fun, and effective, I decided to review this product myself.
I invited back Retired Nurse Practitioner, Heather Wen, who you may recognize from my Ear Candling video. Heather always has plenty of earwax for us to remove and she wanted to see if this video endoscope would do the trick so she could stop coming to see me.
After multiple attempts, Heather was unsuccessful using the Video Endoscope to remove her earwax. It had a few main issues, First, it didn't help her see her earwax because the camera is too big. There wasn't enough room in her canal to insert the camera and still remove the earwax. Second, the metal loop on the Video Endoscope move around too much. Removing earwax is difficult with the proper instrumentation, let alone a flimsy wire attachment.
Since Heather was unsuccessful, I decided to see if I could remove some of her earwax. I was able to get some out, but only because I knew how to maneuver the wire loop without looking at what I was doing. Some earwax came out, but there was still plenty left behind. However, since I'm a licensed Audiologist with years of training and experience under my belt, I probably am not the best representation of a friend or family member using this tool to remove your earwax.
This is why we brought in my front office assistant Kris. Kris has ZERO experience removing earwax so she is the perfect representation of a friend or family member. Upon attempting the removal of earwax for less than 1 minute, Kris scraped Heather's ear canal and jammed the earwax into her ear canal. This resulted in an abrasion on Heather's ear canal, and an irritated, albeit non-punctured, eardrum.
The moral of the story is that attempting to remove your own earwax, or having a friend or family member attempt to remove your earwax is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Earwax removal should only be attempted by a licensed professional like an Audiologist, Hearing Instrument Specialist, Otologist, or Otolaryngologist.
While using a Video Endoscope to remove your own earwax may seem like a good idea, and great way to save some money. It is really just another dangerous tool that I would consider even more dangerous than Q-Tips for removing earwax.
So while you migh save a little money buying products like these to remove your earwax, you may also require expensive surgery if you accidentally make a mistake.

*Full Disclosure: I provide cerumen removal services at my clinic in Phoenix Arizona. That being said, less than 1% of my KZread audience is in the Phoenix area, and less than 0.005% of my annual revenue is derived from these services. I would make WAY more $ than this by either accepting an endorsement deal for these tools or selling them directly to consumers. If you still think I made this video just to prevent me from losing money, that's on you. 😂

You people would insist that but wiping was a professional's job if it wasn't a daily task. Cleaning your own ears out is just good hygiene. Telling people that "only" doctors should use "professional" equipment is saying that basically you have no learning curve but people without medical degrees do. Which is asinine. There are Veterinarians on youtube who TEACH people how to express the anal glands of their dogs and clean their dog's ears out because people don't want to do gross things for themselves but it is not your PLACE to fucking groom others. Foreign Object removal? Maybe. Natural bodily fluids that change consistency with diet? NO. And YES people educating themselves to actual danger vs medical propaganda about what "might" be dangerous will effect buying trends in private practice services. You aren't fooling anyone. Do you know why I do not need a Doctor to charge me hundreds of dollars to remove wax from my ears? Cause I clean my own.

I grew up with tons of ear problems. I had infections every few months. Both of my eardrums are deformed and damaged and I have major hearing loss. Practically deaf in my left ear and only 50% in my right. I just got over a really bad cold and my ears were completely blocked up. Everything was muffled to the point where everyone had to yell at me to hear them. I just tried the Bebird camera scoop and let me tell you, nobody is more careful with my ears than my own self after all the problems I’ve been through. There was so much drainage and build up, I couldn’t see my eardrums at all. I was able to see and scoop every bit of that build up and I can hear again. Not one ounce of pain.

You're lucky! You must have purchased one of the last "working" BEBIRD devices. Right now, from late 2022 to now, Jan2023, the reviews for their products are horrible and consistent! Most complain about their apps either won't open or crash or the camera wont' connect or the camera connects but disconnects within seconds. The reviews mention this on any model of smart phone they use. What's worse, is THERE IS NO SUPPORT AT ALL from BEBIRD either on their fake website nor on Google Play. But MUCH MUCH worse, is that their current version of their trash software, when launched, DEMANDS to have access to "MAKE PHONE CALLS!" OH HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL NO!!!!!! Clearly, they've gone the way of the SCAMMERS who want only to get people's personal information and contacts. THAT'S WHERE THE REAL $$$ IS!

The color is like any good quality camera. Very accurate. It also has an unexpected feature where it will automatically orient the image using gravity. In this mode, you can accidentally turn the pen, but the image remains normal. But, it can be disabled and then the image will turn with the camera. While I thought that those with their own little screen would be cool, it turns out that this is more convenient. I can also video record if needed. Very happy with this purchase.

I used a different model of this. It's wireless and has little transparent plastic spoons that work very well. you can rotate the tool and the image will keep the same orientation, which really allows for accurate attempt. I was able to remove a massive (1cmx.5cmx.5cm) chunk of hard dark-brown wax from my ear with no real trouble. I was even able to get out a short hair that got in there from my head, will no real discomfort. That said, I have particularly good fine motor skills and have had years of practice with various dexterous tasks in small spaces.

I have the same model. It’s great. Just saw it online last week and ordered immediately! I’ve had to have my ear cleaned by a Dr several times due to 1 narrow ear canal and dry hard wax. I thought I’d find a ton in that ear n’imitait was spotless. My other ear however has a pretty large, hard piece far in blocking most of my eardrum. When I put just the camera in I can see it so well but I’m scared because I can’t tell if it’s right against my ear drum. Once I have the scoop on I can’t see well enough and I am so scared to try and grab the lump and touch my eardrum.

Yeah, these people might even be paid to discredit good technology. After all they want you to go to the Dr for ear issues. But what if you can look into your ear yourself and diagnose an ear infection yourself and research what you need to cure it. Big pharma is known to be untrustworthy. I mean they lied about hydroxychloroquin and ivermectin to make you believe you needed their experimental vaccine for covid. The covid vaccine is literally irrelevant with these two profylactics.

It was eye opening to see how clearly you can see the evidence of someone sticking something in their ear and injuring the lining. Talking about the red mark Kris left. Now I know I can't fool my ENT saying I didn't dry to unclog my ear with a "tool". The skin in there is SO fragile that sticking something in there can scratch you and the moist dark environment is paradise for bacterial infection.

I immediately noticed the poor tool-use approach by the retired NP. She had her arm raised to shoulder level, with her elbow fully extended in space. Rookie mistake 🤨! Rule one: hold the tool with a firm, reliable grip; 2: rest as much of your arm as possible on a firm, stationary object! She should have her upper arm tucked in, welded to her ribcage. Then it's all in the fingers & wrist! Simple but crucial.

I tend to get a lot of ear wax build up in my right ear. I use to go to the ENT when I started to notice that my hearing was being effected and they would remove the ear wax for me. However one time while out of the country for vacation I started to lose my hearing due to the wax buildup. I had a miserable time on my vacation. But since I got this scope, I can check my ear myself and when I notice a significant build up I go to the ENT. This way I don’t have to wait till I can’t hear anything before going. I would never attempt to remove it myself even though I’m a surgeon. Also the one that I have has a conical attachment that goes on the end of the scope to make sure that I don’t go in too far even if accidentally bumped.

Oh ya, for me there's nothing worse than not hearing out of one ear to a clog. I've had it happen MANY times in my life. But me, I won't mess with my ear for fear of clogging it myself, so I basically wait until it clogs (1-2 times per decade on avg) and then go to Dr and get it syringed. Right now my right ear I can tell there's a plug of wax in it, so I bought a higher quality syringe to try it myself once it clogs to see if I can avoid going to the Dr for once. I have used crappier syringes with not much luck before but this new one is more powerful and have some drops to out in the ear firs to loosen it up before I attempt to syringe. But I feel u though, once my ear clogs i'm depressed until I get the wax out. What's even worse is if you have estuation tube dysfunction which I've had 2-3 times before. Where u think your ears clogged from wax, get it cleaned out and still 100% clogged. Its fluid that gets caught in tube and nothing but time can really dry it out. Takes about 3-5 days. Its called Swimmers ear too I think. So annoying feeling.

But even though there is a possibility that a bug could get in someone’s ear, it’s not a common occurrence and it shouldn’t be something you worry about all the time. I know a phobia and OCD can present similarly. Just mentioning that because some people with OCD fixate on one single fear that they build habits around trying to investigate/alleviate. I have an anxiety disorder myself so I say this with care and sympathy.

This problem resembles an obsessive fixation perhaps moreso than a phobia, like you said. I own the video endoscope and find it very useful for checking out my ear canals and determining how much ear wax is built up. Because I wear hearing aids and produce quite a bit of wax this tool helps me to know when I need to remove the wax. However, I do this without having the metal curette attached. I too found the curette very difficult to use. Besides being unmanageable, the end of the curette is some distance from the end of the camera and it was difficult to obtain a good view of the wax to due to the curvature of my ear canal. If like me you live alone and don't have someone who can use an endoscope to examine your ears then this is a helpful, but limited use tool. It's been my experience that easy access to ear care specialists at your clinic or Costco is not always convenient or timely.

I bought a similar one of these with soft, silicon scooping tips. It worked for me. Having the ability to see in my ear and have the camera flip 180° made using this much easier. Fortunately, I don't have near the wax these individuals have. The trick seems to be taking your time to familiarize yourself with the tool before you decide to stick it deep into your ear. I'm not sure this was a fair representation. At any rate, the main reason I bought this was actually to check for infection, cuts, and irritation. I've been having trouble with true wireless headphones. They all seem to bother my ears and cause infections. For what it's worth, I've been told by hearing specialists that I have odd shaped ear canals. I hear frequencies lower than the average person and I miss out on some of the much higher registers.

I had quite a successful attempt with a similar product however it had a clear plastic scooper instead of a wire curette. I got so much gunk out I'm shocked by how much clearer my hearing is. I'll admit it's a bit unnerving performing this on yourself but I found it quite useful. I wouldn't necessarily say it's safe, but it does work. It's a day later and I'm still adjusting to how much I hear higher frequencies now. Of course use at your own risk.

I have an endoscope, similar to the one used in the video. I have no problem at all seeing and removing ear wax. I see a couple of issues with the way those in this video are attempting to remove ear wax: 1) They have not used the correct attachment - this job required a smaller curette. If it doesn't come with one, then buy a different kit. 2) The ear wax had been allowed to build up for months. If the woman is producing that much ear wax, she should be cleaning it every couple of weeks, which is easy to do if you have a device at home. It’s very obvious to me that Dr Cliff, and the nurse with the ear wax, started out with a clear bias against these devices and were determined to prove it. They did not perform their ‘experiments’ with an open mind. What is interesting to me is that Dr Cliff made no mention of THE NUMBER ONE DANGER of these devices, which is sterilisation. Unless you know how sterilise the curette, you shouldn’t be sticking it in your ear (and certainly shouldn’t stick it in one ear and then the other).

I disagree completely. Our son had been complaining that he could hardly hear out of his right ear. He went to the Dr twice for it, but they looked in it and didn't say a word. I bought one of these video scopes, and it was some of the best money I ever spent. Our son is highly sensitive to pain, especially in his ear. But using one of the pick attachments that comes with it, I was able to remove, in one piece, a huge, black, chunk of wax. Painlessly I might add! The plug of wax was nearly solid, and shaped like the inside of his ear. Behind that plug was trapped "goo". No way could I have pulled that away from his ear drum any other way. A Doctor is going to give it a bad review regardless of how well they work. They want you to pay them $500 an hour to use a squirt gun to "try" to remove a blockage. I have pictures if anyone wants to see it.

I got an ear syringe from Amazon. It's just like a large Calpol medicine tube with a rubber end, you suck up water from a glass and spray it into your ear - it directs it to the side so there's no pressure going straight in. It works a treat and only cost about £7. The only trouble is you can't see if you got all the wax, which is why I watched this vid.

I had pain, kept hearing a loud pulse and tinnitus with a full feeling in my ear. There were horrible scraping noises. I was afraid an insect was in my ear. I put olive oil drops in then a day later my new Wi-Fi otoscope arrived. It was actually easy to use and helped me a lot. A doctor’s appointment is 25 Euros without any treatment and the otoscope was 9 Euros. My right ear is clean and fine but there’s a big lump of wax against the left ear drum. There’s a really good attachment like a spoon for pulling out wax etc and it goes in well but because the lump is against the eardrum I didn’t try as I don’t want to perforate the drum. I’m continuing using olive oil but might have to pay for it to be sucked out if this doesn’t work. The otoscope has been really helpful for me to self diagnose and being familiar with anatomy I’m aware of the ear canal quirks and sensitivities. I think they’re useful for looking into the ear for when you need to check what the problem is, and easy to use.

I'm a retired orthopaedic surgeon, so I have some experience with arthroscopy. The eye-hand coordination required to use an endoscope of any kind is definitely an acquired skill. Familiarity with the anatomy is a big help, but it is not enough. Some people never really get comfortable with it, while others seem to catch on pretty quickly. There is quite a bit of proprioception involved, keeping track of the angle of the camera, its depth of insertion, forward/backward/upward/downward translation, rotation of the camera ("up" is not usually marked on the camera image), and in the case of ears, simultaneously pulling on the pinna one way or another with the other hand to straighten out the ear canal a bit. The view is monocular, so there is no depth perception. Ear canals are not straight, and a wired camera is going to have the weight and stiffness of the wire erratically pulling on the camera as well. Also, different models of endoscope have different diameters and different focal lengths. If the focal length is too long, a curved ear canal may mean that the point that is in focus is around the curve and not actually visible at all. If it's too short, there may be fisheye distortion that complicates getting oriented. If the camera diameter is too wide, you may not be able to get it far enough inside the ear to see, depending on the anatomy of the specific ear canal. I bought one of these devices about a year or two ago, to clean my father's ears - he wears custom-molded RIC hearing aids, was producing a ton of earwax, and his ENT didn't want to see him as often as I wanted him to, to keep the ears clean. The model I got is wired, but connects to its own display so I didn't have to muck around with cell phone app issues. It has silicone tips rather than metal (I did make a note of reviewers' complaints of the tips breaking off -- note to self: Don't press hard, and check the tip for cracks or wear each time before use). I've tried this on myself and on my dad, and I've decided which tip I like the best. For me, this is a very useful tool, if I take my time. But actually, what has made the biggest difference in preventing accumulation of wax in Dad's ears is keeping his ear hairs trimmed!

From all the reviews and demos I've seen, it seems that the biggest complaint on any of these devices is related to the ones where the scoops are made of HARD plastic. Even an ear Doctor, who demoed one, found that even when used gently, the hard plastic caused pain. There are now models out there that use SILICONE attachments that are much more gentle to the ear. There's also one I saw that had a little adjustable "stopper" that you can set it to not enter too far and avoid touching the ear drum. Sadly, the reviews on the video quality and heat produced by the LEDS was not good.

I bought one for fun. It took me a couple minutes to familiarize myself with it and to find a good way to maneuver it and it worked fairly well. The metal loop is garbage and it's too long and dangerous since you're basically poking your eardrum by the time you manage to insert the camera part in your ear. But mine came with a plastic spoon that gets well attached to the pen and I can adjust it and place it's end closer to the camera so you actually see what's happening. In the end I did manage to see some damage I caused by using my fingernail in the past and realized some of the itchiness was not caused by wax or infection which was a relief.

The sad fact is that in a lot of places it's hard to get people to remove ear wax. I have one of these (it has a slightly different design with a soft plastic scoop on the end), I use it regularly to keep my ears reasonably clear and it really helps I feel a lot better. I would rather use a professional but I cannot find anyone to do it.

Your choices are basically doctor (probably specialist) or something like this. This device is fine if you're careful. I get infections if I leave my ears alone, I don't need to clear everything out, just clearing the large easy to access debris is enough to prevent issues. Removing debris at the entrance seems to have a drying effect, as often dessicated wax falls out the next day (the deeper debris I didn't bother touching).

I got the endoscope just to get immediate confirmation that I didn't have a bug in my ear if I ever felt anything weird lol. Mostly just an anti-anxiety tool rather than actually doing anything with wax.

I had a double ear infection the other week that left a ton of infection debris in my ears, which has left them clogged. My NP prescribed me amoxicillin and ear drops, and they did nothing to help me. Now I wake up with nothing getting an infection coming on in ears again.

My boyfriend bought a camera to look in your ear but it doesn't have a wire on the end so you can't reach in far, which is probably good because my boyfriend sees black stuff and he probably would have poked his eardrum trying to get it. I think I have a little bit of cotton fibers stuck in my ear....

I've done ear flushes previously. I recently bought a bebird brand and I must say that I am pleased. It takes some getting used to, with the camera and the angles of each ear. I'd say that one should do it on their own because you'll know exactly how far to go. I've had no issues with this and I've been cleaning my ears since it arrived from Amazon. By the way, I wouldn't even let my ears get as bad as the nurse's. You can drop some peroxide in and let it run out to clean. Her ears were disgusting.

I have just used one of these last night and the silicone scoop piece at the end has fallen off and got embedded in my ear canal. I ended up at the emergency room/accident and emergency, the doctor could not get it out with forceps as she said my ear canal was already red and irritated and she didn’t want to cause more damage. I now have to wait 7-10 days for a referral to the ENT specialist to try to suck it out. It’s still in my ear as we speak. So I agree with this video that you should be very cautious with these products and will never use one again.

I've been seeing a lot of advertisement for this lately, and I was interested. Especially when you see the amount of gunk the actors pull out of the ear. It's gross, but satisfying. I'm happy I looked it up, and found this video. Thank you sharing this with us Doctor Cliff.
