The Most COMPETITIVE Race In NASCAR History
Спорт
Talladega is one of the craziest and robust NASCAR tracks on the circuit and while it is almost always crazy there are some races that absolutely smash all expectations. That is exactly what happened in 2010 in the Aaron's 499. A race that I am comfortable saying is the most competitive race in NASCAR history.

Do you think we’ll ever have a more competitive race than the 2010 Aaron’s 499 again?

Fascinating that in Dale Jr country that the record for changes is 88 and that this race had 29 leaders and the 29 wins.
This race was so important for me. I was a Harvick fan growing up (still am), and this was in the middle of a 3 year winless streak. My interest in nascar was fading as I was heading to college and my favorite driver was falling off. I was visiting my mom for something and it was on so I checked it out, and was treated to an amazing race with my guy finally getting off the losing streak. Larry Mac screaming "HE TIMED IT PERFECT" is still ringing in my head.
NASCAR's version of the 2015 MAVTV 500 at Fontana for Indycar. Both had 80 or more lead changes and hold the record for most lead changes in their series.
The crazy thing is this was the in between race between the 2009 finish and 2011 finish. Such somewhat forgotten yet legendary status. And hearing a record 88 lead changes among 29 drivers is something we’ll never see again
@tomdalfonzo9959

If not for the drivers' pointless desire to run in a single file freight train for certain stretch of the races, it could've very well been over 90 lead changes. It might have even passed 100 lead changes.

That stretch of Talladega races during the CoT era has what's been greatly missing from the track since then. The last several have largely been a disaster, with the previous Fall 2020 race still just leaving a terrible taste in my mouth.

This was the last race i was able to attend. There we're tornado warnings throughout the weekend leading up to sunday. I actually kinda miss the 2 car tandem drafting as well as that black 99 car. Thanks for making this.

I remember that race. Was upset when Jeff Gordon wrecked. And was really hoping McMurray won, never have been a Harvick fan
Whatever aero package NASCAR used in this race should've been used in every NASCAR race it ever ran again until the end of time.
I love Harvick and considering he took over Dale Sr. team after he died in 2001 makes it more special since he has become the beast of a driver he is today!
Good video man I really in joyed it
Talladega had som great competitive and close races even BEFORE restricted plates. Even the most lead changes happened in the unrestricted 200mph+ era
6:42 Does anyone else see Kurt Busch driving with half a door? Holy cow!
Competitiveness is subjective.. there will always be a bigger number.. love the videos.. you got me back into nascar after over a decade

It wasn’t more “competitive”. They weren’t racing. Lead changes only happened because the pusher had to swap spots so he wouldn’t overheat. They were literally pushing teammates around all day not trying to race swapping every 5 laps.
Great piece I think best in a while it was insane that race 88 lead changes 29 leaders!!
I wasn't watching Nascar at this time, but have definitely heard of the tandem days. I did not know 2 cars could be faster than a train. That's wild
Thanks for the video, the memories of a nine year old hit hard
“Tires don’t mean nothing to me” 😂
Awesome video
If I’m not mistaken this was the race that produced the record in terms of lead changes.
"We were Laughing and Living Drinking and Wishing and Thinking as that checkered flag was waving. Sure like to stay in Talladega"
That was a masterful finish by Harvick. He got him slightly loose and made the pass at the perfect time. This race, the Daytona win against Mark Martin, and pushing Johnson into the corner too fast at auto club to steal the win are all fun to watch. Those were some savvy veteran moves.
I was there for this race! It was an incredible Sunday followed immediately by the Busch race that had been postponed from Saturday. Can’t wait to be back there this October for the YellaWood weekend. We’ve done Spring weekend twice already and have never seen the trucks race before so we opted for October weekend this time. Plus it’ll be playoffs and that’s just a bonus.
I was at this race! And got to see my then 2nd now favorite driver win. Another underrated Talladega race
The south american transmission of the race was awesome, i see that on live as a child and waiting the win for montoya, tony rivera make the transmission x1000 better, nascar need this aero package back i think

Lucky you guys! I've yet to go to Daytona and Talladega since 2019 (literally the only 2 racetracks that are still entertaining aside from Bristol), been holed up at home since all this hit
I remember watching this race and I was pulling for one of Chip's cars. But, I was ecstatic at the finish!
I was so exited when i saw a new iceberg vid that i forgot to plug my earphones in. Not a smart move at 1 at night
I got goosebumps rewatching that last lap.
Funny how everyone talks about a "slingshot" but its the only race I remember seeing it actually happening for the win
I dont understand why people don't like tandem. -Imo its a much safer way of plate racing than putting 30 cars on top of each other in a pack -the pairings are fun to watch to see who works with who -it allows ANYONE to be at the front fairly easily -they can pace themselves -it feels like a 1.5 mile race but cars travel in 2 and can get insane speed boosts
F1 fans: woohoo there was a lead change NASCAR fans: 13 lead changes? That was it
Lead changes are great but sometimes it's just between a few cars like the 500 at Daytona in 79 or Darlington with Kurt Busch and Ricky Craven oh and Jeff and Jeff at the southern 500 with 1million on the line just saying
Danm this is why I miss Nascar
Ah the good ole Allison grandstands.
Usually I'm pretty excited for plate races, but I've been iRacing all week on this package, and after watching the pro-invitational, I think this might be one of the most boring Dega races yet. I think the best package we've had in recent years was the 2019 Talladega playoff race and the 2020 Daytona 500. As dangerous as that package was, those were the two most exciting plate races I have ever watched in my life.
I'll be at Dega this weekend and I am soooo ready.
I was able to go to the spring 2009 and spring 2010 race. Those were exciting races to be at.
This video just makes me want to see this race again lol
Like I said, when jaret uploads, I get happy
Even at age 10, I knew this race was a true banger
What a great race
Harvick looked like he about went below the double yellow line crossing the finish line. Great race though.
I honestly think with this current superspeeway package, we could see the most competitive race this year. At least, if they choose not to just ride around like at the Daytona 500
Here he comes here they come He got him!!! It’s Harvick!! He got him!! He timed it perfect he got him. Mr. Where Did He Come From??

Wow reutiman and vickers were good plate racers tho
I was at that race and it was something to watch. I really don’t think we’ll see that anytime soon. That package was good drivers could pass and they didn’t have to have all that momentum
I would kill to get Talladega under the lights, or at least, more than 2 races (Daytona has 3, RC newest addition)
The two car tango Tag Team championship was wired but I prefer The 1984 Winston 500 at Talladega. Hard to say right now with the New Car comming
This was the first race I ever attended and it was amazing!
88 lead changes among 29 different drivers.
I remember this races, are part of my childhood.
2010 was the last truly great season in NASCAR if you ask me.
I doubt there will ever be another competitive race like this one
I remember being at this race, we would always camp out by the creek behind turn 2, but when we were driving into the track, the person at the gate entrance wouldnt take our excuse for saying "our tickets are already in the campground" (which they were) and made us go buy our own pair of tickets somewhere else. We had always sat about right in the middle, on the very top row of the back stretch grandstands and the new tickets we got were on the bottom section on the front stretch at the entrance to pit road. We decided to use them and sit there for this one year and couldnt really tell who won the finish. Other than that, I remember asking my dad if we could go to concessions around lap 70-75 cause I wanted a Dega Dog and we ended up missing the first real caution of Hamlin's spin
Hopefully this weekend lmao (definitely not but one can dream)
The car if tomorrow was a king of tandem drafting. It was so fun to watch. The newer generations just don’t do it as well. And the drivers back then were awesome
It's possible. Before, the record number of lead changes was set in 1984 with the Winston 500, and the Talladega 500 in 2nd that same year. Since 2012, the most ever was fall 2020 with the crazy finish, with the spring race coming in 2nd.
All this is to me. Is more evidence to support Tandem Drafting was the best Superspeedway package.
I honestly thought that the 2011 Aaron's 499 was going to be the most competitive race, considering the finish and the margin of victory.
