My whole strategy back in the day was to stack equip spells onto a single monster, only to find out years later that my whole strategy could be beaten by my opponent just flipping my card face down.

I used to equipe my Axe of dispair on my Obnoxious Celtic knight. Dude could only die to monsters with 1900 or less atk. But he had 2400 with the axe. I was the king of my schoolyard. Good old times.
Equip and Field spells were intended to incentivize running a focused deck instead of a goodstuff pile but the boost was so irrelevant because the best monsters in a respective type would need 2-3 cards of buffs to match a single, completely alone La Jinn. It's the result largely of the first sets being completely arbitrary in the statlines they would give monsters. When trying to solve "nobody is using Equip Spells" the design team assumed it was the Equip Spells that were the problem rather than the unbalanced stat spread of the types and so to solve the issue made equip cards more generic and with even bigger swings of stats. Which did make for some equip spells being playable but it further exacerbated the problem of making pile decks.

False, The Wicked Avatar's ATK and DEF is always 100 points higher than the other highest ATK on the field, even if it's a monster with Moon Mirror Shield and/or stat changes applied during the damage step only (the latter can do stuff like avoiding triggering Buster Rancher's destruction, but not beating The Wicked Anima) It's the only card with a stat changing effect that ALWAYS applies, to my knowledge, so there's no infinite scaling with it, or surpassing it. Though i guess on Master Duel you could carefully overflow it's stats to make them like 50 and go for game, imagine winning a duel like that.

Funny. In OCG 1999 before true power creep. There were plenty of decks that ran those out of date equip cards. Because back then, due to limited monster card pool, and lack of strong attack point monsters. Those equip cards will help in a pinch or get rid of walls. Since at that time. The monster with the highest attack for one tribute was Curse of Dragon and it could not beat over Giant Soldier of Stone or Aqua Mador. Equips did leave a legacy, just this was early OCG only

Wow, nice combo but, it’s more accurate to say: United We Stand + Scapegoat on “attack declaration”. There are few cards that can be activated during the actual damage step/damage calculation. Axe of Despair always confused me as a kid. When I first saw the uncensored OCG art a decade later, it finally clicked for me. 😂

I’ll always love equip spells, especially when the anime used to consistently show the monsters equipped with them actually holding them. It was just so cool to me and made me use them all the more. Even to this day when I slap on a Divine Sword - Phoenix Blade for just a little extra boost, I like to imagine the monster grabbing the sword as it materializes and doing some epic pose. Not to mention I totally used Mage Power a lot during the Arc V era since I could control 8 S/T cards at once. That + United We Stand = Yeah…I’m going for that OTK. Imagine taking an attack from an Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon that’s been boosted by 3 copies of Mage Power, 2 copies of United We Stand, a copy of Performapal Cheerful Mole in the monster zone, one in the Pendulum zone, a full board and to top it off a copy of Mystic Plasma Zone in the field spell zone. And I went games where I could consistently pull that off or close enough just because of the sheer amount of search I had with a Pendulum deck. Was it the most optimal way to play? No, but I found it hilarious when I could do so.
'United we stand' was an absolute game changer in Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds for DS

@Jotari
Ай бұрын
Megamorph was fantastic in Forbidden Memories (where equips where immensely centralizing), but I think it's actual effect makes it very inconsistent. Something like doubling your attack under certain conditions but halving it other times. Which, if I'm right, kind of pales in comparison to Mage Power and United We Stand.
@shayoko6
Ай бұрын
Megamorph is an amazing card. It affect the printed attack on the card. Doubling it while you're late points are lower and lowering it while your life points are higher It overlaps other effects which means it can't be combined with other buff or debuff. You can clip at 2 an opponent's monster to make them stronger or weaker as well. Imagine giving the opponent to Lava Golem and then buffing them to 6000 attack just to Magic cylinder. And then they take another thousand at their stand by. Unlike United We Stand and Mage power it doesn't require other cards. So you could pull off a turnaround out of nowhere. And with cards like solemn judgment which are already paying half of your life points. It can be pretty easy to stay lower than your opponent if you want it for offensive purposes. With all that said I don't think equip spells are efficient even in goat format. It's easy to lose card advantage with them.

That's why I love playing the armor xyz archetype in my shark deck. It's so nice to combo up the xyz armor chain, along with making equipping monsters relevant. It's definitely overlooked imo
I personally never used equip spells, but I did find satisfying to boost the atk of one single monster to ludicrously high numbers. That’s why Cyber dragons were so good for me, and also the reason why I’m so disappointed in the support they got over the years
Then: Imagine giving your monster that much attack with one card. Now: Imagine getting a single turn to play the game.
I recall Horn of the Unicorn also being a somewhat better Sword of the Deep Seated (although iirc the drawback is that recursion is mandatory.)
There were entire decks built around Mage Power and United We Stand even up into the post Power Tool Dragon era. Some Noble Knight and Six Samurai builds even abused the crap out of them knowing that a Shi-En Synchro or Artorigus equipped with one would be monstrous and near impossible to stop before it was too late.

I have Mage Power and United We Stand in my deck! I'm glad I'm not the only one who does that. Pair that with the Maju Garzett series and Seal Of Orichalcos and you're basically unstoppable!
I briefly played Yugioh. Several people I played D&D with also played so I decided to try it out. I ran a Warrior Deck and managed to surprise the guys I played with because within a month I was beating them and came in second in a Yugioh tournament I played in less than 2 months after playing. Unfortunately I lost the deck during super storm Sandy along with 99% of my cards. Also lost my Magic the Gathering cards including a Seedborn Muse, Riptide Replicator Elf deck that I loved playing and was basically unstoppable in multiplayer games. The look of despair on the other players faces when I would create a 150/150 Blue elf token at the end of each turn was beautiful.
Horn of the Unicorn was my JAM back in the day! I was also fond of Paralyzing Potion to halt my brother completely.
I still love to run some Psychic blades in my Lyrilusc deck, just to dome someone over the head with 4x 2000+ atk directly if they're wide open, instead of running the normal draco future lines and stuff
This reminds me of an idea I have once, an equip magic card that gets transferred to the monster it was sacrificed, fused, used as material for. The effect is that it gains 200 attack points but each time it is passed on the 200 attack points is doubled.
Evil Eye Of Selene....Best equip spell ever, my beloved Evil Eye ❤
This is why my signature card will always be reverse trap. Pulled some mighty big upsets with that and flash assailant.
I love using equip cards, one time when I was playing a generic beat down deck I had blue eyes on the field equipped with 3 mage powers and two axe of despairs with the mountain field spell, I lost the duel, but it was fun having a monster with that absurd power. This was on master duel as I don’t have money for an actual deck.
Power of the guardians, Salamandra, Axe, Fusion Sword, 7 completed/limiter removal (idc if it's qp), mage power and unitd we stand will always be my favorite chunk of equip spells.
Also power of the guardians really powerful. Not only adds stacking 500 atk each time your monster battles, but also protects it from destruction
Horn of the Unicorn, Malevolent Nuzzler, Megamorph. Not to mention interactive ones like Ring of Magnetism or any that decrease your opponents monster's attack points.
I mean to remember a Synchro Monster that just straight becomes an equip card with its effect.
I can't recall how man times stim pack rescued me while playing spirit caller. Either giving my monster a "major" attack boost or wait till 4 turns are up and the Oponent ones start regressing.
My favorite equip card isn't even a spell card, Metalmorph, love it's secondary effect beyond it's 300 attack boost, really fun in casual games
I used to run a warrior toolbox deck I remember equip spells fondly
I never knew that the Axe of Despair we got was censored. Uncensored is pretty cool.
Shout out to power of the guardian for still hanging in there when I need a Lil protection
They are pretty handy. One of my favorite monster is Victory Viper XX03. The card can create token which copy its atk and def. So if I equip one, the total damage multiply.
Favorite equip spell of all time Power of guardians. Not only did it give att/def boosts based on attack if a monster was destroyed you can remove a counter to protect it from destruction so ya it could protect monsters it wasent even equiped to.
I remember running equip spells with Maha Vailo back then. Good times
there is then the most powerful equip spell of all: power of the guardians. It raises the monster's attack by 500 per spell counter on the card and the card gets 1 spell counter per attack (that actually gets to start the attack, in other words, the attack itself is not stopped or negated) and per time the monster is attacked with its drawback being that if the monster would be destroyed by any effect, you may remove one spell counter from the card. So, if by chance you have 3 of them, you can raise the card's attack by 1500 per time you attack. If you have one of the cards that lets the card attack multiple times... you see where I am going with this.
Megamorph: The equipped monster gains DOUBLE the Atk if you have lower Lp than your opponent. If your Lp are higher, the original Atk is halved. Basically, equip to a high damage monster and win in one hit, or decrease the atk on a monster that your enemy controls. Sadly this spell doesn't work on Ra but you could technically summon it, Use it's effect 3 times to remove trap cards, make another monster you control two times stronger, go for game.
Axe of despair was my jam back in the day.
I think the only monster i liked using was maha vailo equipped with 2 axe of despair and a malevolent nuzzler equip card which puts its atk at 5750. For those that dont know maha vailo gains an additional 500 atk for each equip card equipped to it
I still used Axe of Despair in tournaments in 2017. I've always found that card underrated.
“Somewhat” 😂😂 do you remember that butterfly card combined with that leaf water thing bullshit, yeah that was game over

Equip spells and Dark Bribe were in every deck I made back in the day.😅
I used to play with the axe so much. Very useful to break stalemates
Ha. On the playground. Geek!
My favorite is the book that can only be equipped to dark magician and dark magician girl. I don't even need the magicians, just either set them for opponents to destroy or use Magical hats with them. They give 1000 Life Points whenever they are sent from the field to graveyard.
Axe of despair released alongside the other equips in the gameboy games which were the blueprint for the OCG, so technically is not powercreep, they designed tiered cards from the get-go. in the same game you have all the burn cards ranging from 200lp to 5000lp damage, the later ones were actually nerfed when printed because how absurd they were
Tip:Guardian equip spell's cost can be avoided if you have Armory call, but be warned calling for power of the Guardians will not activate it's effect as it would activate when targeted for an attack(Declaration) and not during the attack(Damage calculation).
Can’t believe people actually used the equip cards that go to the top of your deck. Some people still use them. It’s a great way to completely stall your momentum
most blatant powercreep is Three As One, a card designed with Ojamas in mind that can both set and set up the conditions for Huge Revolution.
A friend of mine and me played yugioh when we were younger and he everytime he used the axe of despair I was in despair
Reasons why so many used to go into Thousand Eye-Relinquished Decks
yeah, united we stand was super crazy strong back in the days. Loved using it :D
Axe of Despair and Mage Power were in my fiend deck back in the day.
United We Stand, mage power, and allied Forced were my Six Samurai Nisashi's (and sometimes Yariza's) best friend. Sams swarm and United on Nisashi with 5 sams is 8k damage output. Early Sams were so much more fun. Flexibility and lack of OP crap is the way to go. Strategy.
Mage power is still used in different fossildyno stun strategies
It wouldn’t be a bad idea if some of those old equip cards were given a new version to make the older ones worth considering. Take Dragon’s Gem for example, 300 attack is kinda weak but if we get a Dragon’s Crowned Jewel, only equip to a dragon monster that has Dragon’s Gem already equipped, it could be an interesting combo. Maybe a few gimmick equip spells like Knight’s Reinforced Shield or an ancient ritual charm to buff the older equip cards to double the effects
Power creep in that game was so absurd and so fast. I remember casually playing again in high school only to see the utter bs strategies and multi-turns people would go through. Ruined any fun to duel some people bc it very clearly was just a pay to win and not everyone could sink all that money into every new release
Union monsters, along with the Marincess archetype, became the newer equip cards.
Sometimes i would run a Blue eyes deck with Maiden, using United We Stand to proc her effect on my turn and get a blue eyes, making her 1600, then discard GY shenanigans to get at least 1 more blue eyes onto the board to have two 3k beaters, and a 2400. If they target her i got another Blue Eyes, and had three 3k's and a 3200 Maiden now ready to swing, and some Backrow to hopefully at least protect some of them. Not good by any means, but fun. Absolutely hammered people down when it worked.

MST and mirror force gonna ruin your whole day, go spirit first to banish back row then use thats effect to summon blue eyes. If opp has 2 monsters, attack with spirit first. You can use the effect to trib it for a blue eyes and get a free attack in battle phase. When i use my blue eyes i normally use azure eyes first for protection then use the effect to start bringing spirit dragon back for the effect over and over.
Sword of the deep-seated and united we stand are bread and butter for me
