If you want to delve deeper into microcontrollers, I would highly encourage you to check out Jens’ channel: Friendly Wire:
• How to build a binary ...
I began my code with Jens’ and modified it to work with my specific needs. One of the additions was to program the clock to cycle all the tubes (count down) once every 12 hours. This is a preventative measure against ‘cathode poisoning,’ where if a cathode (digit) isn’t used for an extended period of time, it will develop some visible degradation. The most significant hour’s 2 through 9, and the most significant minute’s 6 through 9 do not get used when displaying the time and must be ‘exercised’ to prevent cathode poisoning.
The code is written in C. But C is a high-level language that cannot be interpreted by the microcontroller. Therefore, the MPLab IDE from Microchip is able to compile the C language into hexadecimal machine code that the microcontroller knows how to read. Furthermore, Microchip’s IPE is used to flash the .hex file onto the microcontroller.
Also, I may have used some electronic nomenclature that might not be known to all viewers:
Binary: A numerical notation of base 2 that can represent computation logic of on and off.
0 = 0
1 = 1
10 = 2
11 = 3
100 = 4
101 = 5
110 = 6
111 = 7
1000 = 8
1001 = 9
etc.
Bit: One binary digit (I just realized this is a portmanteau). For example, 1b (the ‘b’ means in binary) is one bit, 100b is three bits, 1001b has four bits (affectionately known as a nibble, or nybble).
IC = Integrated Circuit: More commonly referred to as a ‘chip’, is a generic term used for a manufactured circuit that could contain any number of components and functionality. The Microcontroller is an IC, which is many times more complex than the decoders, which are also ICs. However, they look very similar.
Breadboard: A useful platform for prototyping electronic circuits quickly, without soldering.
Perf Board = Perforated Board: A blank slate to build a prototype or one-off more permanently than a breadboard.
PCB = Printed Circuit Board: I didn’t use a PCB for this project, but sometimes I called the perf board a PCB out of habit.
Cap = Capacitor
V_DD: The conventional name for the power supply pin of an IC.

Thanks for watching Dan! We'll get to study together soon hopefully!
Beautiful build combining two distinct yet complimentary areas of interest. Very well done!
Such a beautiful finished product. I love its size and the detail it has, each one complimenting the other. I reckon this is one of the best pieces I've seen on a KZread video. Great work
What a piece! Thanks for sharing this!!
OUTSTANDING Scott! Love how you incorporated the electronics. Beautiful piece all around! Thank you for sharing

Wow! man this is amazing!! Soo cool and you're so clever too, being able to design and build the electronic side of it. Really impressive

Fantastic project and really great explanation/execution.
This is exactly the project I thought of doing, but didn't know how best to mount the tubes. Thank you for the idea! Now... just to learn how to do any of this woodworking properly :)

Just don't look too close at the Kumiko 😅. Also, nuclear fission is where it's at; maybe I'll have a go at solving that challenge. I'll have a video on it next week when it's done.

Beautiful work and beautiful video editing. Watching you assemble that kumiko (sp?) panel was delightful.
Very cool! As an electronics geek and ham operator who dabbles in woodworking I appreciated your understanding of both. You have more patience that I for the woodworking part for sure. Lately I've been into restoring old radios with wooden cases, sometimes rebuilding the case and putting new guts in it if the old chassis can't be saved. I'm pondering putting some of those restores on KZread. Just don't know if there is much of an audience for it.
This is so impressive! Well done

@@ScottWalshWoodworking We need more videos, you have an unparalleled energy on camera! I love how you are able to make do with a small shop. Inspiring for anyone living in densely populated areas.
I've always wondered why we don't use gps chips to set the time for clocks like this. Even indoors you can get a lock on a single satellite which broadcasts a time. Seems like a 'set' button that enables the gps and copies the time into the microcontroller would be pretty convenient.
Love the clock; you did an amazing job! It looks super cool! Are you an engineer? I can't imagine that you are a mere hobbyist in electronics. What's your day job?

Scott, great job. Lots of respect. I, too, dabble in electronics and have a wood shop. My grandfather built 4 grandfather clocks for his children and used curly maple. It is not a fun wood to deal with, especially with all the curves and details. It does look beautiful, though. I can’t believe no one asked…how does the crystal with that chip work? How accurate is the clock, at holding time? I have to know.
You missed the opportunity to flash the 1200 when you first power on the clock. 😄
I approve of your work :)
Nice work! I'm curious to know what parts you used to pull the cathodes to ground.

Quick question: Did you manage to prevent the tubes from being "wonky" in those slots? I did a similar project and the tubes will definitely move out of place if touched...
@ScottWalshWoodworking

yeah, it's definitely a 'look, don't touch' situation. Some people solder them in so they stay in place but I can't imagine trying to de solder it to replace a tube in the future.
