    I miss the line where Hephaistion talks about how Alexander holds his head a little to the left. This is a well remarked attribute mentioned in the histories and often captured in his statues. I loved that little detail that made the man so unique, and how it was written in the scripts as something Hephaistion loved. This was the greatest untold love story, from both running around the tomb of Patroclus and Achilles, down to Alexander seeking Egyptian priests to officially name Hephaistion a hero after his death, so that both could be in the same place in the afterlife. Seriously, beautiful. Also, having met Jared Leto, I can vouch that he is actually that beautiful. When I met him, I called him Hephaistion, and I got the most beautiful smile back and a whispered "thank you."

  • @blackmamba6046

    @blackmamba6046

    5 ай бұрын

    @@carlosangulo3035this is what you don’t understand - it wasn’t a war movie by any means, it was a story of a great man who happened to be a great warrior and military commander and yes he undertook the impressive conquest of Asia but it wasn’t a war movie. It was way more than that. And I love how Oliver Stone fleshed him out and how scenes like these showed his dreams, motivations and aspirations no matter if they were historically accurate or not because this is Stone’s perspective and take on Alexander. As for his sexuality, to be honest no one can know for sure about his sexual preferences so I don’t know where you take your “he was straight as an arrow” from. Don’t tell me it’s because he married three women, because that proves and means absolutely nothing (not saying he wasn’t into women just saying that it marriage is no proof of heterosexuality). One thing is sure, dude needed an heir so marriage was a must for him. But in the end, it doesn’t even matter if Alexander or Hephaestion were sexually intimate or just platonic, they were incredibly close and they deeply loved each other. There is not much known about their relationship except that Hephaestion was his closest friend and knew all his secrets. However, Alexander’s reaction after Hephaestion’s death is pretty telling. Apparently his grief was uncontrollable. He had the doctor executed And he threw himself on Hephaestion’s body and cried over him for a day till he was pried away by his companions. Afterwards he spent three days lying on the floor grieving without touching food and not caring for his appearance. In other words, dude had a complete mental breakdown. Eventually he organised a magnificent funeral for Hephaestion that cost around $250,000,000 in nowadays money and paid him countless tributes, declared mourning etc. He never appointed anyone to take Hephaestion’s place as a commander of Companion cavalry and Hephaestion’s image was always carried in front of it. He went even as far as to the oracle of Siwa in Egypt (that previously declared him as a God) if they would permit to worship Hephaestion as God which they wouldn’t but they permit that he would be worshipped as a divine hero. There is a presumption that Alexander did this in order to secure that they would find each other in afterlife (they believed that the common men went to the Underworld ruled by Hades but Divine heroes would go to the Elysian Fields). Interestingly enough, Alexander himself died shortly after receiving this answer from the oracle. I mean judging by his reaction to Hephaestion’s death, he loved him deeply (and they didn’t have to be at all intimate with each other). Aristotle is believed to have described them as “one soul in two bodies” and apparently they thought this way of themselves as well. When the mother of Darius came to beg Alexander for mercy (in the movie there is a scene with his daughter Stateira instead of his mother) and adressed Hephaestion instead, Alexander said that she was not wrong because “this man is too Alexander”. This suggest he considered Hephaestion to be his soul mate or his alter ego. Take whatever you want from this but no matter if they were homosexual, bisexual or straight, they seemed to have the closest bond possible. And Oliver Stone captured this bond and love between them masterfully.

    I watched this movie and never understood why it was so heavily criticized. It's far from perfect-the constant jumps between time were distracting to be sure, and there were a few historical changes that bothered me-but I find more scenes in it which I like than those which I dislike, and this one is among the best. The movie brings to life the emotions and the dreams of these people and the world in which they lived.

    Definitely an aweinspiring, powerful, impressive and just absolutely beatiful scene. A little bit off the topic but Alexander's with his 'tendencies to 'fly high', or how it calls, an ability to see prospective things like through and through and and the aura of the 'solar deity' splendour and glory' surrounding him brings me, as strange as it souds, to think about Jim Morrison, who, at least to my knowledge, has been strongly inspired by the character of Alexander, took after him and wanted to be perceived this way. I'm not sure whether this sense of affinity between these two has been created purposely or not in the movie yet this seems me so much obvious that almost intrusive and so perceptive.

    Actually this is a great "love scene" as opposed to a" sex scene" (that was with Roxanne). Alexander the Great was in love with Hephaestion from the time they were boys. It was not a platonic "bromance" they had sex and were acknowledged by all his contemporaries and his mother as "eromenoi" aka lovers. Alexander had a nervous breakdown after his lover Hephaestion died. It contributed to his own death barely three month later. If you want to be educated about what same sex relationships were like in ancient times read Mary Renault's Alexander novels .BTW there was no ancient Hellene word for" gay" as we know it 2000 years later.

To unite the people of the world, for all to learn to read, write, sing, live with dignity and greatness and power and gentleness in unity...these are the goals. Greek here, for all the potential naysayers, same sex relationships in ancient Greece were, for the most part, inconsequential. They were only "bad" for the passive one in the relationship and the only thing he had to worry about was the gossip. And before some "smart guy" jumps and points to Solon's laws, these were for male prostitution, not same sex relationships.

Alexander who had feminine side since his childhood was seen as a threat bcoz future kings were supposed to procreate and spread their genes as much as they could that is why his mother and Philip made him sleep with high class c@ll g1rls when he was literally a kid . Still he had no babies throughout his life only one after his death , there is proof of his relationship with Bagoas who was known for his beauty and Hephastian on the other hand was a tall handsome strong general unlike in movie , and Alexander had very intimate relationship with him , he felt open to explore his feminine side with him and was very open to him . And people still believe he was straight lmfao . His father was a red blooded warrior still he wasn't straight but bi but have to make Alexander straight who was clearly more feminine .

    This is why Stone's Alexander was a bit too ahead of its time. This was almost the same year Brokeback Mountains left people shock with gay cowboy romance. If this Alexander could've been released today, people wouldn't hate it that much. Just an opinion, some aspects from the Netflix Alexander is incomparable in term of budget with Stone's Alexander. I don't really like the Netflix version's of Macedonian costumes & war scenes.
