    There is a difference between the 21‘s and the 23‘s. 21 is 2 way, 23 is 3way. The depth and clarity is even more precise. But the 21‘s are already amazingly good…

    I compared the Neumann‘s 310’s against. They had no chance even the 21‘s crushed them clearly away…ATC SMC 45’s seems to be better in mids. But not in low end so for me PSI is the better choice. But i‘m from Switzerland, so probably not fully uninfluenced. I had the ADAM P10A for years and loved them. But PSI is a huge step up. Everytime i fire the 23‘s on i‘m so glad to have them and just listen to amazingly mastered songs is so good to understand why it functions that good. The PSI gives you the ability to hear the difference. Full in love 😍…BTW my distributor told me that 23 and 25 in the meantime have the same driver technology used. They released the 23‘s after the 25‘s and updated the driver/technology from the 25‘s to the 23‘s.

    @@ProdByTimDuncan I would say the the most significant difference is the staging due to the 3 way vs. 2 way design. The stereo image is even better and the mids are better as they got the seperate tweeter for that frequency range. Side by side it hurts to your wallet. I had to make the decision but when i heard the 23‘s even i wanted to take the 21‘s i couldnt. So i really can recommend to check them side by side. In my opinion its worth the money for this upgrade

    Yes, I switched actively between two tension levels, as well... 1) the nail-biting fraughtness of lusting after such non-DSP analogue flatness... and B) the smacked-gob-like exasperation at the bleedin’ price (which left me requiring some CPR of my own). A ‘fantasy’ product in so many ways, from way down here. Even so, would there be any point in splashing out on these, unless you had all the high-end gear with which to use them to the full, and a super-treated room in which to listen? And, for a gardeners’ question time-style question... can you rotate the tweeters either way... to favour having them ‘inside’ or ‘outside’ of the woofer... and which does the team recommend?

  • @PresentDayProduction

    @PresentDayProduction

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, splashing out on good monitoring (and room treatment!) is the best investment you can make - if I inherited a studio with £10k worth of gear and £2k worth of monitors I’d sell it all and get £12k monitors! And yes, the plate with the mid and tweeter is perfectly square, so you can orient that in any position you like. If you went ‘landscape’ (it is gardeners question time after all!) whether you put the mid/tweeters on the inside or the outside is really up to you. Some manufacturers (Neumann/K&H) say they should go on the outside, some (ATC) say they should go on the inside. But it all depends on the room and your own personal preference.

    ATC might beat them by a hair for midrange detail but they are far behind when it comes to phase and stereo imaging. PSI are as good coaxial monitors which is a great achievement for a traditional design. Also I think the PSI meet and exceed the working threshold for midrange detail easily so I very much doubt you're getting an advantage by trying to eek out a little more detail in the midrange at the expense of other things like phase response and stereo image. But ATC make great speakers no doubt. If you're primarily mixing it doesn't matter. It's personal preference. If you're in production ATC offer a bit more (Can get big mains with 16" woofers which PSI won't be able to match). But in that case I'd go Geithain 901k as they are more impressive to me than ATC's mains.

    Interesting... but out of the range for most of us. At least the non-pros in your audience. Myself included, of course. Although i DO remember Philips many years ago using a limited precursor of this system in some Hi-Fi speakers, using some kind of feedback sensor to regulate cone response, so i guess this is a much updated form of this idea. Also, the BBC-designed series of monitors from a long way back (eg the LS 3 5As and others) were calibrated as closely as possible, meaning that if a speaker went down, you could replace it with another model of the series, and know it would match as closely as possible. Obviously tolerances here are tighter than what was achievable in those days. Maybe you could do a video on "affordable" three-way monitors and any recommendations you might have. (Interpret "Affordable" , as you wish!

    @@PresentDayProduction Cool. Never heard any of the Kali range, but I hear good things. However, as I have Focal Alph 80s, so I will (have!) to stick to them. What I do need to do is see whether I need to add to these as I'm going to move my studio set-up into a bigger room (which has heating, for those long winter months!) and would really like to get into mixing for Atmos. Yes, I know it can be done by selecting Binaural or 2.0 monitoring in the renderer, but a 5.1 set-up would be really nice, as I will have the room. Maybe I could get away with adding 3 Focal LPH 65s f(or rear, and centre) as even though they aren't the same, they will have roughly similar sound characteristics. Have you guys ever done any mixing for more than 2 channel stereo? Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the same.

    These might be great but at 12k for a pair?? My Neumann KH 80's are at just about at a point of diminishing returns. They play +/- 0.6khz between 100hz-10000hz which is the most critical part of the spectrum( +/- 2khz from 59hz-20000hz). And frankly, having or not having DSP to achieve a neutral sonic signature doesn't matter unless you get a strange hard on by the thought of going analog only (or in other words you're an audiophile that believes they hear a tangible loss in quality due to Analog>Digital conversion done using a his-res 56 bit processor).

  • @PresentDayProduction

    @PresentDayProduction

    Listen to a pair of Adam S3H via the analogue inputs, then via the AES inputs. There is a noticeable step up in quality when you go in via AES. I can also demonstrate the difference in converter quality between a Focusrite Claret, a Universal Audio Apollo and several mastering grade DACs costing many times as much. You’ll pick the Focusrite every time and save yourself a fortune, but more than likely won’t hear the differences on your KH80s. And what does +/- 0.6khz (dB?) from 100hz-10khz tell you unless you’re putting out albums of sine sweeps and pink noise? We are currently reviewing the ATC SCM45 which is around the same price as the PSI. They ‘measure’ very similarly on paper and sound very, very, very different! And completely different in our room to how they’d sound in yours. Measurements are great for manufacturers when they’re matching speakers or want some tech specs to put on their websites, but that’s about it. Bring your KH over and listen to some of our test tracks, and then listen again on the PSI and ATC and I guarantee you will have a “Holy crap!” moment, just as our very own Jamie did when he brought his Neumann 310s in. He sold them the following week and bought a secondhand pair of ATC SCM35 for £1500. Suddenly the quality of his mixes went up several bars… he was hearing detail in the midrange he’d never heard before. Mind blowing detail! And the difference in transient response was so dramatic he started going back over his mixes and completely revisiting his approach to compression. The result? Mixes that are vastly more open, dynamic, clear, powerful and polished, that translate exceptionally well to other systems. In a very short space of time. Test tones sound pretty similar, however.

    @@wickfut Pretty much everything adds latency. Dataconverters, analog (because their transfer functions are never strictly proper) and digital filters. The question is, when does it become relevant? For live applications it's a whole lot more relevant than when playing music at home. I can understand that in DSP you don't want to use FIR for reasons of latency. They require a lot of samples delay after all. However IIR filters are very efficient and only require 10 samples or so as delay. That's 0.2ms @ 44.1kHz. Beying 1 meter further back from your speakers adds more delay than that. Is it really relevant then? The issue is that not every speaker manufacturer allows for choosing for a low latency option. Claiming that DSP can not be low latency is nonsense however.

    Well the best piece of mixing advice is to invest in monitors, so make sure you watch this and the next video. And we’re not promoting products, if we were we would tell you. No money has changed hands for any of our reviews, we asked the companies involved if they would lend us a demo pair of their product, and they said yes. So if they’re crap, we’ll tell you, but they aren’t. There will of course be loads more tutorial style videos coming, they just take and enormous amount of time and cost a fortune to make, and that means we have to work twice as hard when we are not making videos in our production and mastering work to subsidise it. This isn’t a grumpy response, it’s just that you can’t please all of the people all of the time, and a lot of viewers don’t appreciate just how much work goes into making these videos. This one took ten days. And there are a million “5 top mix tricks” videos too many out there you can watch…

  • @wibblewobble1934

    @wibblewobble1934

    Your sheer ignorance and lame attempt to sound like you know what you're talking about is laughable. There are so many elements that make up the final delivery of sound from a speaker. To say a 3-way system is some how inherently innacurate is probably the dumbest thing you could possibly say :)

  • @Mtaalas

    @Mtaalas

    @@wibblewobble1934 Well, if you use these for far field, they might be fine. But that requires a large studio and long distance from the speakers. In the near field 2-way system is already a compromise. That's why Genelec went with the wave guide design with their newest series, because only good speaker is one that has a single point source.

  • @PresentDayProduction

    @PresentDayProduction

    2 жыл бұрын

    I (Mark) disagree. I’ve used dual-concentric Tannoy’s and many, many Genelecs over the years and ALL speakers are inherently compromised, but I prefer a decent set of 3-way monitors any day of the week. With a listening position at least 1.5mtrs away from the PSIs the drivers completely disappear and you get a cohesive wavefront that not only makes the driver disappear, but the speakers themselves. Quite an amazing listening experience, and one that blows any set of Genelecs I’ve ever heard clean out the water! But it’s horses for courses isn’t it?
