On a trip to the UK in 2000, we were driving through the mountains on a foggy day, street lamps leading the way as this played. I'd heard and enjoyed it before, but that moment struck 11-year-old me to my core.

The Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin (1967 Vinyl LP) Sept 15, 2021 Nights in white satin, never reaching the end Letters I've written, never meaning to send Beauty had always been, with these eyes before Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore 'Cause I love you, yes I love you Oh, how I love you Gazing at people, some hand in hand Just what I'm going through they can't understand Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend Just what you want to be you will be in the end And I love you, yes I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you Nights in white satin, never reaching the end Letters I've written, never meaning to send Beauty have always been with these eyes before Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore 'Cause I love you, yes I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you 'Cause I love you, yes I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsetter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy's spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colors from our sight Red is grey and yellow white And we decide which is right And which is an illusion... Written and composed by Justin Hayward.

Such a pleasure to hear the whole thing unedited and in such clarity Phil . I too have a few horrible muddy versions one on a remixed version of the original album and one Cd/one vinyl copy of "This is" the Moody Blues . First time i played the vinyl copy of "This Is" i thought my cartridge had reached the end of its life !!

just found your channel, my TT is down, it was doomed... bought a Marantz tt-15 ..loved it, my wife hired some maids to clean the house and they ruined my clearaudio wood virtuoso needle last year... made me so sick i almost gave up on vinyl all together... now i look at the websites of the repair shops around Austin and they are 4-6 weeks out... Thanks for putting some damn good music on YT, its great to hear vinyl again. something about putting a needle down that engages me like no other type of playback..

Phil, do you also spend your Nights In White Satin? Nights In White Satin, a song for eternity. One of my personal all time favorites. I would be interested to know how many of the 50-somethings were made because of, at or to this song. I am among them. How do I know? I was there. Nights In White Satin was released on November 10th, 1967 and was a masterpiece that bridged the gap between pop and symphonic progressive rock, with lyrics that came directly from Justin Hayward's personal life. So all over again, to the beginning, to the origin. Didn't we just have this topic already? When Justin Hayward, he was just 19 years old, living all alone in a small apartment, full of heartbreak, just dumped by his girlfriend, he remembered a gift she had given him and started writing a song that became a million-selling, era-defining classic. "I was sitting on the bed at the time, playing around a little bit on my old guitar, and that's when I came up with the first two verses of 'Nights In White Satin.' I was living out of a suitcase at the time and owned next to nothing - except for the white satin bedding my ex-girlfriend had given me. There was quite a bit of emotional chaos inside me at the time. I wrote love letters, but then never sent them and stuff like that," Justin Hayward recalls. More than half a century after Justin wrote it, he still finds it hard to explain the enduring appeal of Nights In White Satin, the Moody Blues' most famous song. "It's weird," he says, "because when I listen to the record, there's just this big empty space and these wonderful echoes that we had in the studios at Decca in his day. But the song has a strange power. It gave us a style that suddenly seemed to work for us. I think it identified the sound of our Moodies." Justin Hayward made the best of his situation - writing a song. A record deal for his band "The Moody Blues" was not yet in sight. Then an order from the record company Decca comes as if on time. The Moody Blues were to record Antonín Dvořák's 9th Symphony with a symphony orchestra. The record company has developed a new stereo system that promises a special sound experience. It wants to promote the system with a classic rock record. The producer in charge quickly throws the plans out the window. Justin Hayward will later tell: "Peter Knight, who took care of the orchestra stuff, came to the One Hundred Club for one of our gigs. The first thing we played at that time was 'Nights In White Satin.' And that's when he got the idea to do a concept album with the theme of 'Night and Day' instead of the Dvořák record. That's how the classic rock album "Days Of Future Passed" was born, with songs about the awakening of the day, about midday, afternoon and evening. The final track on this album is "Nights In White Satin". Just this nearly eight minutes rock ballad with bombastic orchestral sounds and the heartbreaking vocals of Justin Hayward. The song didn't generate a penny for him personally. Thank you 🙏 dear Phil, for these high quality Nights In White Satin. I think I will have a good sleep in it.

The way I understand it, the studio that NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN and the whole DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED album for that matter was recorded in, had just installed a brand new "noise reduction" unit by the DBX Company, but upon playback of the final mixdown, producer Tony Clarke found the unit to be faulty. I don't know if the album was given another pass of mixing (at that time in 1967) while bypassing the DBX unit. It doesn't sound like it was. I feel that, even though the CONCEPT of this project is SUPERIOR and the overall musical technique of the mixdown by Clarke was PHENOMENAL, the original 1967 mix always sounded a bit "muddy" and had alot of treble roll-off, over the whole mixdown. it wasn't until the official remix of 1978, is when one can TRULY NOTICE a remarkable improved clarity, of the entire album, for that sake. HOWEVER, the problem with the hence new mix of 1978, there were ALOT of subtle differences in the new mix; segues between the rhythm section & the London Festival Orchestra were either longer or shorter, certain vocal overdubs were lost; echo, reverb and sonic depths were dimensionally different, leaving tried & true Moody Blues fans & followers to ALWAYS PREFER the original 1967 mix, even with all of it technical compromises & faulty sonics. Anyways, those are my recollections. ...BolsaChicaRadio

That explains our clear sonic memories of DOFP being bright, clear and clean... and our disappointment over our vinyl pressing engineering quality. Excellent pressing. It's a shame that my copy is bowed like a frisbee. I can't even play side two unless I have it clamped down good. Why the hell can't anyone do a semi-decent 180g pressing that isn't warped?
