I’m 55. From Louisville Ky. When we were kids in the 70s there was a channel called WDRB that had a show every Saturday night called Fright Night. They would show two of these old Universal horror movies each Saturday. Was so much fun. And literally scared the daylights out of us. Great memories. Great movies. A simpler time

Wow! Now THAT is a great discussion of Universal horror films. Dan's seemingly encyclopedic knowledge is amazing and looking forward to the next SoT Monster's Den that brings him back. The time went by so quickly and so much information was discussed that this show needs to be watched again in the near future. Great show, Dan and Pete! 10 are listed below but it could change at any time though the top three would likely hold some spot in the top three as I never tire of those. The top spot is likely because watched an updated version of it Saturday night and the film was so crisp and clear. 1. Creature From The Black Lagoon 2. Bride Of Frankenstein 3. Invisible Man 4. Dracula 5. Frankenstein 6. Wolfman 7. The Raven 8. The Black Cat 9. The Mummy 10. Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman

Love this Monsters Den Ranking The Films Of idea. I thought the Arlo/Pardo combo was great, but the Dan Brown/Pardo set up is out of this world ! My top 5 Universal Horror Films are; 1. "The Bride Of Frankenstein" 2. "Creature From The Black Lagoon" 3. "Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein" 4. "Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man" 5. "The Ghost Of Frankenstein. Look forward to future rankings on maybe Hammer Films, Roger Corman Films, zombie films, Lovecraftian Films and much more. Great show.

Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of my favourites, due to the historical significance of the costume and underwater camerawork technology, not to mention the badass design of the Creature, but dear lord did they overdo the score.

My top 10 Universal horror films are: 1. The Mummy's Hand 2. Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman 3. Bride of Frankenstein 4. The Wolfman 5. The Raven 6. Frankenstein 7. The Invisible Man 8. Son of Frankenstein 9. House of Dracula 10. The Black Cat (1934) Note: Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman ranks so high for sentimental reasons. As a kid it was the first Universal horror movie I ever saw. I had to fight my parents tooth & nail to stay up after the 11:00 news to watch Shock Theater which was featuring the film. Also I wasn't sure if Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein should or could be included. If I were it would be #1 and the rest would go down a notch. It's my second favorite movie of all-time. Honorable mentions go to: 1. The Mad Ghoul 2. Werewolf of London 3. Creature From the Black Lagoon

Hi Pete, So thankful you and Dan put up this episode of top 10 Universal Horrors. What a wealth of knowledge between you both. Enjoyed growing up watching these on TV back in the early 70's. Coming home after school on Channel 7 or on Saturday mornings on Channel 11. Loved Chiller Theater with the band coming out of and back in the quicksand !!! Was wondering since you have such a background in music as well, if you have seen Dracula with the Philip Glass music score. It was available on one of the Dracula DVD reisuues. I feel it adds a lot to the atmosphere of the mostly musicless film you mentioned. Wonder what you think if you have. Looking forward to future episodes! Btw love the Hudson valley Squares also. If you ever expand the square let me know ! :) Best, Robert Presti

The classics are the classics for a reason. By the way, Bela had a small role in "Night Monster" as the house butler.

I'm glad you call it Universal "Horror" not monsters because that may preclude stuff like the Black Cat, Raven, etc. "Golden Age Horror" would be another way to list it, which could bring in Island of Lost Souls, Dr. Jeckyl, King Kong and the like. But per your list, mine would be: 10. The Invisible Man Returns 9. The Mummy 8. Son of Frankenstein 7. Dracula's Daughter 6. The Black Cat 5. Bride of Frankenstein 4. Dracula 3. Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein 2. The Invisible Man 1. Frankenstein

Chaney actually played both the Wolfman & the Monster in A & C Meet Frankenstein. At one point Glenn Strange broke his ankle. As a result Chaney put on the makeup to complete a scene. Dwight Frye had actually been a highly successful Broadway actor. When he came to Hollywood he expected to get leading roles in films but instead, as a result of his Universal films, he became typecast basically bursting his plans.

A very fun watch! Thank you. With a huge treasure trove of background information on the films. I really enjoy these older monster films. Have you ever watch the Turkish Dracula film from the 50s? It's wonderful and better than any other version I have seen. Maybe a deep dive into non-godzilla Toho's films in the future? I do some writing for a website called Vinyl Writers, which features articles that focus on the cultural and artistic aspects society from around the world. Music reviews seek to uncover obscure, electronic, punk music that have a unique voice. You'll also find great film reviews and interviews. Just sharing. Thought you may find some of the articles and reviews interesting.

Hi Pete. Really enjoyed the discussion. Like you these are my favorites. I love Frankenstein Meets Wolf Man but 2 things about the movie always bugged me. First : when Chaney grabs the man in the crypt since it's full moon and he's in his murder mode why isn't his hand hairy. Plus it would have made it more scary. In my humble opinion. 2nd : Major continuity error. When the hospital staff finds him in his bed after going out and murdering the policeman he's back in his hospital gown. Instead of his pants and shirt. LOL.

I love the universal classic monsters. My favorite horror series. Like Pete, they're a part of my DNA. However, and this is just a minor quibble, it is so irritating when all the actors are dressed in suits, ties, dress shoes, dresses... No matter where they're at. In a dingy castle, clogging thru the mud, in the rain.. Doesn't matter.. They're wearing a suit. It just, to me, stands out as like an unrealistic part.
