Saw the original in the theatre back in the day. I had never seen anything like it. There were a lot weird ambient noises during the nightmare scenes. I had seen it with a friend at least 12 times in the theatre where matinees were only $2.50!!!! Dream Warriors is my second favorite.

I agree. 1 and Dream Warriors follow the same narrative. Also watching Wes Craven’s New Nightmare follows that narrative somewhat even though it takes place outside the movie universe. Those 3 to me are the best. 2 is garbage, 4 and 5 are fun to watch but not to be taken seriously at all. Freddy’s dead is just a comedy.

Great ranking and as always a very enjoyable show, lads! I haven't watched any movies of the original series in ages (and I think I skipped the remake because of the bad reviews), and wasn't really planning on re-watching soon. But since each of the original movies seems to be liked by at least one of you, you've convinced me now to go looking for the Blu-ray set. The first one was actually the only one I saw in the theater, and that was at a screening in the late 90s/early 2000s (I was too young in the mid-80s). Back then I thought it hadn't aged that well. But I think they showed the German dubbed version, which makes foreign movies suffer from almost in every case. I always had a soft spot for Nightmare 2, and I'm really looking forward to the 3rd one, not only because Patricia Arquette is one of my favorite actors (True Romance, enough said...). By the way, Roger Ebert was a fan of Wes Craven's New Nightmare, he gave it a thumbs up on Siskel & Ebert (unlike Gene). With Roger and horror movies it was hit and miss, he loved or at least quite liked Halloween, The Last House on the Left and even The Devil's Rejects, but he didn’t like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Thing. But even if you don’t agree with him, he always had good arguments for not liking those movies.

Mine too but I'll gladly admit it's a super goofy movie but so that it's funny, I just don't find the later sequels that amusing to watch though technically they may be better movies. It does look more like a cheap TV movie but director Shoulder have much better films; Alone in the Dark (1982), The Hidden (1987), Renegades (1989) as well as some other good horror titles Wishmaster 2 (1999) and Arachnid (2001). Incidentally, the coach is genre veteran Marshall Bell and I'm amazed they still haven't cast Kim Myers as Meryl Streep's daughter or something. Also, there's an interesting documentary on Mark Patton called Scream Queen - My Nightmare on Elm Street (2019). kzread.info/dash/bejne/pX2E166dgNLej9I.html

Unlike the Friday the 13th series where I can see people picking 4-5 different ones of them as the best with this series it HAS to be the first or third one. *Maybe* if you squint hard enough somebody could make a case for "Freddy vs. Jason" or "New Nightmare" but even then I think that's just being contrary on purpose.

Freddy’s Revenge is my third favorite of the franchise. The first time I saw it, I absolutely hated it. The second time I watched it, I was angry because I forgot I had already watched it, and was not pleased. The third time I watched it, I loved it. They took a different route with the film that I’ve grown to appreciate and I really enjoy the nuttiness of the film.

There's 2 things no one mentions about part 3 Dream Warriors...number 1. For some reason when describing everyone's abilities (powers) no one ever mentions Kristen's obvious acrobatic abilities and only discuss her ability to bring others into her dreams...yet throughout the film you see Kristen CONSTANTY evading Freddy, flipping, leaping, running up walls even double flip chest kicking Freddy...so, I don't get it AND 2. In the original, Freddy is just killing people same thing with Freddy's Revenge even more randomly...part 3 is where the writers had Freddy kill people specific to their fears, Dream Master, Dream Child and Freddy's Dead tried to maintain that but they never quite caught the magic that 3 had...SO, TECHNICALLY...Nightmare on Elm St. Part 3 Dream Warriors, is the only film in the entire franchise where Freddy kills people according to their fears and it's done BEAUTIFULLY....it's done perfectly, after Dream Warriors it was a hit or miss situation but more failures as the series went on, that is why Dream Warriors is the best of the franchise... P.S. I think people pick on Freddy's Dead too much not realizing it's a goofy homage to the franchise and watching it like that it's quite entertaining

  • @DigitalBath742

The best part about the remake was the beginning where I thought they were going to make it ambiguous whether Freddy was real, or in the kids head... but they wasted it straight away. Still prefer it to 6, though... that film is stupid trash.

As we're in the presence of one of the great boogeymen with the Nightmare franchise, but I wanted to use this as an opportunity to advocate for my favourite character in modern times. Wolf Creek's Mick Taylor is modern horror's gem of a bogeyman. Clothed in cheque flannel shirt, brown leather outback hat and dust baked jeans, he takes sadism to new levels with acts of viciousness partnered with crude trashy banter. Like all brutes he has an almost godlike power within his environment, Michael Myers inhabited the leafy walkways of suburbia, Freddie Krueger bestrides the Daliesque world of dreams and Dracula serenaded amongst the tall shadows of his Transylvanian castle. This crass bushman hunts in the almost limitless minimalist landscape of the Australian outback. Visually he appears to mimic Krueger with the red dominated top and hat but with Mick there is nothing supernatural or mythical, no backstory that is implanted into our psyche. In most horrors the tension is built by manipulating the audience with ominous sounds, distorted visuals and leaving the viewer to utilise their own imaginations to conjure their own nightmares. The act of killing is then a shared cathartic release for the viewer and the killer. In contrast, Mick will deliver a sudden horrific but not fatal blow, this only acts to start his playtime and the audience's discomfort. When the victim eventually dies, we are faced by no resolution as it's normally unintended as Mick would have rather played some more. With this very real monster, we are perversely blessed with an unashamedly misogynistic psychopath, a pollutant to the indigenous state of Australia and this bloke is fiendishly a beaut for it.

Pete, I read that the molestation angle of the remake is from the script of the original '84 movie. Supposedly, Craven wanted Freddy to be a child molester, but changed his mind because there were actually molestation cases going on at the time. I actually like the remake, but I can agree it's only okay. Interesting that it was directed by Samuel Bayer, who was a music video director. Believe it or not, I don't watch the original that much. So, that would be next. I actually like the sequels better than the original, because he has no personality in the original. It's interesting that Chris said what he said. When the preview for the remake first hit, I remember people being upset that Freddy might have been set up. I would rank them 4, 5, 2, Freddy's Dead, New Nightmare, FVJ, and 3. For perspective(for anyone that cares), my ranking and taste is because I was only 2 when the original came out. So, I was exposed to the latter movies first. I like 4, except no Patricia Arquette. Unlike Craig, I like Marc. I can relate to him. BTW, the actress from part 2 is Kim Meyers. The actor is Marshall Bell. He was also in Twins. For some reason, the Philip kill reminds me of the Sober video from Tool

I went back to watch "Wes Cravens New Nightmare" recently and I hate to say it but its not as good as I remember. Its not bad by any means but its surprisingly rather slow and boring at times. The kid is kind of annoying. There is a serious lack of gore as well. Its good by virtue of following the abomination of the 6th movie but I don't it holds up.

    - The remake is the worst of them all, and the only i will never watch again. - "Freddy vs Jason" was ok, but as for the remake, the characters were all annoying AF and some of the FX were worst than in the first 3. - I really enjoy "Freddy's Revenge". I think Mark Patton played great as being totally freaked out and scared shitless by the situation. Plus "Kimberly S. Myers" has gotta be the hottest girl in the whole franchise. Too bad he was not into her, cause it would have taken me one min 😁 - 'Wes Craven's New Nightmare" kinda was the start of the "meta" horror, which was followed by the Scream series. A bit too serious for me. - How in the hell most those 80's slasher flicks (Friday 13th, NOES, Halloween) cost $2-5M and looked great, meanwhile we now have horror flicks that cost at least 10x and look like crap !
