The Monks and the Devil - Iconic Tintern Abbey

Many or most have seen a picture of Tintern Abbey. Yet, few seem to be able to pinpoint it on the map, and fewer still have ever been there.
If you leave the M48 at Chepstow and head north along the river Wye, Afon Gwy in Welsch, along the winding A466, you suddenly see a church without roof or windows to your right. In the middle of nowhere stand the ruins of a church so impressive that it would put many cathedrals to shame. If you want to find out why it's there and who the Cistercian monks were, watch this video!

'Bernard of Clevaux, the rock star of monks in the 12th century'. Like it. Class narration of a fascinating corner of our history, lush drone shots, great continuity, appropriately scored. You're a master already.

I only just found this now somehow, but what a beautiful treatment of this iconic site! I really enjoyed the contemplative, almost serene pace of the narrative here, very fitting given the subject matter. Wonderful drone footage! I have family in the area and used to spend summer holidays in this part of South Wales as a child, so it has a special resonance for me. I particularly love the Devil's Pulpit - what an evocative spot, the way it spans all those centuries of the early and later medieval period. For me that's one of the most spectacular stretches of Offa's Dyke, high above the beautiful Wye Valley, on that tree covered hilltop, amongst ancient yew trees, where you're occasionally granted these incredible views. It's here where The Reverend William Gilpin first popularised the term "picturesque" and looking at the way that view from the Devil's Pulpit is framed by the trees and the surrounding landscape you can really see why.

Thanks for that, Tweedy! I used to live in the south Cotswolds so had that valley within a 45 min drive - happy days.

We were taken on a school trip to walk on Offa's Dike in the 1970s. And Mike Oldfield's lovely "Hergest Ridge" was inspired by that landscape.

You were lucky! My 1970s school trip memory is of walking down a very muddy path down to the river Thames in the pouring rain and waving our self crayoned flags at a Queen who was - and that's the galling bit - much younger than I am now!

It is a beautiful and awe-inspiring place. I think it’s something to do with the tremendous size and proportions of the abbey, combined with the wooded valley setting, plus of course, the river itself. It is easy to underestimate the impact of the Act of Supremacy from our distance, but the Dissolution must have been a terrifying process, in reality. The ultimate expression of dictatorial rule for its time. Another fantastic video. Thank you for uploading.

Awe-inspiring is the word. I remember coming round the corner on the way down from Monmouth and went 'Blimey!' in a sudden burst of eloquence. I am thinking of doing a film that puts the dissolution into historical and ethnological context. But that needs some thought... Anyway, thanks - again! - for a nice and thoughtful comment!

Hi. I went to Tintern Abbey a few days ago, thanks to your vid. I really loved it. The Devil's Pulpit is higher than I thought, a little climb but well worth it. Thank you so much for your videos. I love them.👍

@@JamieHarding5 Glad to have inspired you to a great day out. Perhaps I should have dropped a hint about the climb to the devil's pulpit. I remember thinking how the climb goes on and on when I first did it. And I confess that on the day I shot the video, I cheated - parked at the Tidenham Chase car park off the B4228 and just walked across the fields!

Thank you very much for those nice words! And, yes, you are absolutely right: It is a lot of work - The research, scripting, searching for music, and finally cutting takes many days, all to produce 15 minutes of video in the end. So encouragement makes a big difference!
