The Modern House Dress- Why YOU Should be Wearing One | Vintage Ideas for the Modern Woman

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The modern house dress is an amazing thing. What could possibly be better than yoga pants hanging out at home? Well, let me tell you- it's a fabulous vintage idea for the modern woman!
I gloss over the history, so if you'd like to learn more, The Vintage Dancer (link below) goes over it pretty well as it pertains to particular decades, and, well, Google is a trove of info. A slightly more detailed, but still pretty superficial history is available on Wikipedia. Fashion history in general is pretty interesting- because hidden in the folds you can also see women's history- we've been telling our story with our clothes all along.
There's also a pretty good article on Refinery 29 about what it means for the modern woman living in these times rather than our grandmothers': www.refinery29.com/en-us/2020...
Three ladies image found on The Vintage Dancer:

Dresses on forms from The MET, all designed by Claire McCardell- do go take a look, reading about individual designs are often fascinating in and of themselves:

And the screenshots of dresses were grabbed from Target, Amazon, H&M, Zulily, and Old Navy's websites, as named in the video. I trust you don't need links to find those stores :p But here's a few links to some good house dress candidates on Amazon, just in case :)
POCKETS! And several color and sleeve-length options: amzn.to/3xDUpDB

Yes! Pockets for everyone! Real pockets that hold stuff, though- not ones you can fit like, 2 Goldfish crackers into.

My favorite two of your reasons to wear a house dress are so easy to throw on and look like you're TRYING. Not to mention, they are perfect for those of us working from home who have to have cameras on. Just creates a comfortable, put together and easy look.

I've just found my new favourite thing. Too often I'm cleaning house in my PJs because they have the best freedom of movement. But then someone comes to the door and... ug. Thank you so much for this video. You've opened up a whole new idea for making my life better.

You're welcome! Plus if you're cleaning and you suddenly remembered an errand (like what usually happens to me- post office when it closes in like an hour or less!), you don't need to get dressed first 😁

I recently found, after literally years of searching, a good old fashioned shirtwaist dress. Collar, cap sleeve or short sleeve, with a self fabric belt. It's perfect except for not having pockets but that's ok... I have a drawer full of aprons! House dresses are awesome

I love wearing a house dress, I only wear skirts and dresses all the year round and some of mine do have pockets, I also wear aprons with my clothes when I do my cleaning/cooking, in the winter I will wear fleece, thermal leggings and tights, I like getting dressed properly everyday it makes me feel feminine and happy

I've been wanting to wear a house dress too, for the same reasons you talked about. Something else allot more women used to do was, buy clothing patterns and make their own dresses! My mom started making clothes for herself at age 14. I've got this super cute long wrap skirt with matching halter top she wore in the 60's. The patterns and colour are so cute, I wish she kept all her clothes! So, I've been playing with the idea of learning to do this myself.

“Laziness” and “bonus of looking like you tried!” Yessss! I am here for it! I am rediscovering house dresses for another reason I work from home and the dressing for above the waste only is making me so sloppy. Plus when getting the kids on and off the bus I can transition to mama-mode without changing and go to the park with them easy breezy (literally)!

YES! Bring back good old fashioned house dresses! 💖 My grandma and great grandma use to make their own house dresses from the 1920's all the way through the 1980's. When I was s kid, they taught me how to make my own, too. I'm so grateful to them. When I grew up, I tried to be contemporary and wear hip clothes, but nothing off the rack is EVER cut to fit me right. It's always either too tight here or too loose there. Too long here, too short there- meh! With just a few basic dress patterns, you can make comfy, perfectly fitted dresses to fit and flatter your specific figure. I love the old styles because they really are more practical. I feel like a lot of practical off the rack clothing is just too clingy or too baggy. I don't like wearing yoga pants and t-shirts around because I don't wish to reveal my every lump, bump, crack and crevace to everyone. So I'll put a kaftan on over yoga clothes, but it's so true: too much fabric length really does trip you up. I don't like stepping on a long dress and getting my billowing sleeves caught in doors and such! So I've come full circle back to the perfect answer: good old fashioned, home-made house dresses! 👍😊

I wish I'd learned to use a sewing machine. I've been thinking to do it for a long, long time now, haha. My grandmother always made the most wonderful things- but she's largely retired from sewing at this point. I could still learn- but with kids, carving out the time is tough!

Absolutely! That was the idea, at least starting in the 1920's or so- that you could do the housework and still be presentable for outside the house, too. Lots of ads for patterns and rack-ready house dresses in the 50's advertised a few accessories being all you needed to transition from cleaning to dancing 😁

I only wear skirts and dresses and it's much nicer than the modern fashion of now. First beautiful knee-length or longer skirts, are good for practical usage, as they give space to the leg and give free movement (depending on how the skirt is constructed). The way it sways and glides with you as you move and the way it makes you look like a beautiful lady is just too wonderful to miss out on. Oh, and don't forget, you may find spacious pockets in old ladies' house clothes and it's also truly handy. And finally, you may make your husband (depending on who he is) especially proud!

This is all I wear now. This is all I make. Simplicity 7238. I have hacked it. I put in inside pockets and always a separating zipper in the front. My thoughts? If there were a fire, at least I would be covered up, looking great, running down the street yelling, Fire! FYI: the vintage patterns were written smaller; I think this was to make the housewives feel better about themselves. Anyway, I find making the pattern a few sizes bigger, it fits better. Maybe I have just gotten fatter? At least I am more satisfaction.💕

I was raised to wear a dress to school. We could not wear pants to school only dresses until high school. Where I live now it’s very hot in the summer and in the desert that’s all I wear is a lightweight cotton dress. Scoop neck sleeves and then just straight to the knee. I have them in lotta colors you can get them on Amazon their T-shirt dresses. It’s the only thing I can wear in the heat. Too hot to wear anything else. I just stick the hat on and Sometimes jewelry and a cute sandal. Everyone always says you look nice. I am grateful for dresses.

I agree with you, although my motives are slightly different. I never sit properly: I'm always curled up so the knees of my jeans get stretched out. But at the moment I have the two cutest, best fitted jeans that I've ever worn, and I hate to see them wear out this way. And I've just this year discovered I like pinafore dresses/ overall dresses, tunics and sweater dresses. Those, layered with leggings, have become my house dresses. ( I tend to like my legs covered, so leggings are great) Thanks for the video

Thanks so much for subscribing 😊 You probably do- I was surprised how many good ones I actually had once I stopped being like "you can't chase kids in a dress" and realized women did EVERYTHING in dresses for freaking hundreds of years (which- DUH lol). Some I kind of assigned niches to- like that black floral one I don't do yardwork in, because yeah, bend over wrong to weed the garden and the neighbors know what color underwear I picked that morning 😂 but it works just fine otherwise.

Maybe if worn with longish knickers? My thighs sweat BAD and the skin on skin is incredibly uncomfortable. I have some linen pants and comfy shirts that are my go to for at home wear. I do want to add a few house dresses to my wardrobe but don’t care for the styles locally available

You can either get form fitting shorts that go mid thigh to knee, or shape wear that goes about to the knee. My one daughter has same issue, and is rather warm natured. And works as a Massage Therapist, so any time she wears a dress she wears the shorts. We call them “bootie shorts”, but they are longer.

I cut up a pair of leggings and made a pattern from them. Cut to just above the knee, and made from a cotton knit I found at Joanns, I can make make one from 1 yard of fabric. If I shop my sales right, it's cheaper and less annoying then going clothes shopping! It makes dresses much more comfortable!
