You’re not going to find a stock one. And if you do it’s going to be ridiculously overpriced. Don’t get me wrong, I love a MKII. But it has a lot of shortcomings. The one I currently have has an ABA bottom end w/ a 16v head and a big turbo. Lots of fun when it hooks up.

Had a '92 for a few years. My son had bought it used and drove it for a few years, and I bought t from him when he went to university. It was a 1.8 litre 16 valve and was a bit of a mess cosmetically, but it ran really well. It was fun to drive. Over the years he and I drove it, I was forced to learn quite a bit about auto repair and general maintenance. I replaced the clutch shortly after he got it and again after I took it over, 2 timing belts, transaxles, various seals, a head gasket, all shocks and struts, brakes front and rear. I'm not complaining. I liked that old beater. It was fun to drive and pretty easy and relatively cheap to work on. Good looking car too though mine was a bit of an eyesore. Got rid of it when it had something like 385,000 km on it. It could still pick up speed on a fairly steep incline in top gear. Body and interior were well past their due date. Great little car overall.

@@nicostenfors5690The GT in the US was 1987 and 1988 (maybe 1989 as well but my memory is fuzzy) and was a slightly de-contented version of the 8V GTI sold alongside the 1.8 16V. It used the 8V engine but still with fuel injection and 100 to 105hp. It lost the rear hatch spoiler and got rear drum brakes, however the GT was available with the 5-door body and optional automatic transmission whereas the United States never received a GTI as a five-door from the factory until the 5th generation. 1990 to 1992 (like the car in this video) saw the GT disappear and the return of the GTI badge on these sporty 8V cars in 3-door form only (no 5-door), the rear spoiler also returned, but drum brakes on 8Vs stayed as did the automatic option.

This is actually a very good buyers guide. You can also apply 90% of this video to a MK3 Golf since it looks almost identical underneath and has similar problems, and a lot of things are shared ( you can use MK3 seats in the MK2 and vice versa, it's plug and play ) and the rust spots are basically the same although the MK3 is a bit more prone to rust than the MK2. Anyway, the best generations of golfs remain the first three.

@@mihaisirbu1I agree with you. The Mk2 is a fantastic car, but it was a little bit dated looking out of the box and it had an unusually long model cycle. When you think about it, the last of the Mk2s were still being sold new when the original shape was on the designers' desks an entire decade earlier. The "big bumper" refresh was still working with a dated body. The bumpers did not even really integrate with the body. They were larger covers that still wrapped around the body as opposed to be integrating into it. Another dated item was the lack of semi-concealed windshield wipers. Even in 1984 these were becoming common on cheap cars but the Golf retained fully exposed ones until the Mk3. The Mk3 was a little bit better looking overall, but it was also late to market. The Mk3 should have come out around 1989 or so in my opinion.

I'm in nostalgia overload over this. My first new car was a 1992 8V GTI. Tornado Red, just like the one driven here. One thing worth noting is that the transmission final drive ratio has the engine screaming at highway speed. There was a kit to change out the fifth gear overdrive to get the rpm more sedate on the interstate. You could do it with the trans still in the car. Also worth noting is that the speedo was cable driven, so jerks like me who drove long distances could easily remove the cable and rack up miles on the sly. The only two headaches with the car was that the A/C belt would squeal when wet, (which I never fully solved) and the Digifant fuel injection, which would suddenly go into limp mode when least convenient. Anyone who finds a clean one will be very happy. It's the 'Slow car driven fast' kind of fun. Run away from any rust belt car. Run fast.

The circular puck at 11:44 is not a jacking point. If you want to lift the car from the front, use the rail just to the inboard of it, as that's a solid point (where the undercoating is worn to primer on this example). The area with the puck is not structural and often rusts - it's a good way to put the jack through the body, speaking from experience.

Got my license on a Mk II GTD in 1988. Felt like a king when my brother lent me his black, Pirelli-rims-sporting Mk II GTI for a 6-week trip to France back in 1989. I love the Mk II. However: Whatever you do, don't crash in it. In 2003, a German car-magazine did a three way crash-test with an OG Beetle, a Golf Mk II and the then-current Golf Mk IV - using the standard test for new cars that year. The result was quite shocking and the older Golf fared even worse than the Beetle.

I've been a GTI fan since 'reading' issues of Auto motor und sport magazine that my father brought back to the States from Germany. Like many, I lusted after the '84 Mk1 when it was announced; it just seemed perfect. Though I liked the Mk2 right away, by the time I was shopping for a Corrado VR6 in '92, the Mk2 16v across the dealer lot seemed antiquated. Six years later, I sold my Prelude SH in order to buy a '92 Mk2 16v that had been abused in parking lot autocross. After a lot of fastidious maintenance and extensive modifications it was my turn to use and often abuse that wonderful car, though in my hands via track-based autocross. It never broke, though I often was. I encourage any enthusiast to buy one, though I'm partial to the big-bumper 16vs complete with comfy Recaro seats and fragile BBS wheels.

Hey Hoffa don't you know this is the "where is Jason Cammisa" chat room? LOL. Thanks for the comment- glad you liked the buyer's guide. If I get a nice 16V GTI in and my wife doesn't trade this 8V in on it I'll let you know! As for the Saleen, good eye. It's an '85 Big Wing car. Gotta love the super crude early cars that rolled out of Steve's garage in '84/'85.

Hey don’t get me wrong I really enjoy Camissa as his personality is a lot of fun. Your no-nonsense approach is great and I like the crossover from the traditional classic car stuff to the RAD era cars like the Gti and your recent Si buyers guide. You make me want to own them! Looking forward to an upcoming Saleen buyers guide too.

I always loved the MK2 GTI though and agree that considering its place in time, the MK2 is the best one. I'll take mine with a Syncro swap and a EA888 from an R.

This is a decent buyers guide for a used car in genral but not for a Mk2 Golf specifically. Some of the information is inaccurate or just wrong (e.g. the jacking points, unavailability of interior plastics), other is pretty much irrelevant (e.g. frequent gear box oil changes). The most common rust spots are not mentioned at all (lower front inside corners of the front doors, the lower corners of the rear panel and around the gas filler door, as well as underneath the gas filler neck mounting point).

I got a new GTI in 1983. By 1988 it had 100k miles so I bought a new 88 GTI 16V. I was always disappointed with the 16V engine because it has poor low end torque. The 8V engine is way more fun to drive. In 1992 I bought a new Corrado SLC (still own) and used the 88 GTI for my winter car. Then I loaned it to my brother and after a year he sold it.

Sorry but in the UK and Europe, the Mk 1 GTI was the first mass produced hot hatch. The Peugeot 309 GTI, 205 GTI, Ford XR2, XR3, Renault GT Turbo, MG Metro and Maestro, Alfasud Ti and Fiat Strada all came out after, to compete with the golf. The Audi quattro and Lancia Delta road cars came out after their RAC and world rally success. The only one that may be considered earlier was the mid engine Renault turbo. But this was more a two seater race car, than a mass produced four seater hot hatch.

ALL MK2's are awesome cars. Big interior, decently comfy, less rust than MK1's and MK3's, easy maintenance. The carbureted models with the pierburg carbs are very problematic thanks to old age and worn out carburetors so i recommend getting injected model. Pre 1988 have a weaker body, badly placed mirrors and a slightly different interior. I love my 1987 1.6 5-door. I changed the orginal carburetor to a Weber 32/36DGV
