In this video, I interview Audi UK Digital PR manager Alex Fisk about his Mk1 Golf GL. This was his first car and one that he will probably never part with.
While I've sold lots of GTIs, the Mk1 Golf 1.5 GL has always been a car that I've had a soft spot for as I have lots of childhood memories of them, more so than GTIs.
So it was great to document this special car and discover that it actually drives quite nicely.
It was also good to see where the Golf and began and how the Mk1 laid the foundation for Europe's most popular car.

Saw the car on your Twitter feed so really great to see the video of it. What a fantastic machine, so many of the non gti models have been lost yo the modifiers, credit to the owner for its preservation. As a mk1 gti owner its interesting to see the standard machine. I've always had a theory that a car is best judged from lower rather than top spec, where the fundamental quality of the design has to show through. Great video, let's have some more of cars and their owners

@@volkswizard absolutely, in fact it s down here in Cornwall with me. Made journey down easily and cruised better than expected. Dare I say it apart from being noisier, was better than mk2 with better throttle response when needing a litre squirt to nip past something.

Andrew, Thanks for the reminiscence Andrew as this sort of brought back memories of my Golf GTi mk1 ,one of the first in the UK Dealerships , yes in had steel wheels and a 4 speed box. The 5 speed was introduced about 6 months later (bugger) However, we loved it and it started the Golf Gti romance.

This is an absolute gem! I wasnt even born to know about this early of a VW nor has it even come up.in conversation. You've done well to get the owner and the car featured in such a composed and well presented video! The traditional car channels/magazines would be screaming to get such a well presented piece of content on this little beast :) Thumbs up.

Great video Andrew - love a car enthusiast OEM focus & care and Alex’s Golf GL a great example - would be great to see you review a mk 7.5 GL equivalent alongside and see how far they’ve come. Most cars had transitioned from fabric to steel belted radials by the late 70s early 80s with the exotic continental tyres being a safety feature here for the last Passat and Golf GLDs sold here in ‘81/‘82. Showing my age :) - just love the icon that is a Golf mk1 with clean crisp lines.

Fantastic video, I really enjoyed watching this, I used to own a Mk 2 GL it was great with lots of character and that same classic VW smell that you mentioned in the Mark 1 . I always wanted a Mk 1 GTi but they've gone up in price as time has gone on, great to see someone keeping a Mk 1 in original spec and well looked after also looking forward to future videos from the series.

Poor Golf having the Audi RS2 lurking nearby trying to take the limelight! Nice original example though. Was looking on the internet last night at some restoration project MK1 GTIs and the crazy price being asked for them so this is a nice tonic.

The Wolfsburg badge ! Wolfsburg was a totally bogus name, in late 1945 the British occupiers ordered that the factory and workers town must change it's name from ' Town of the Kraft durch Freude wagen' to Wolfsburg after a slightly distant old castle, nothing to do with cars, the nearest habitation was Fallersleben. Or was it ironic? we know which late leader's nickname was 'Wolf'.

I agree Daran, hence why I made the video. Just a pity it's not getting the views but I guess non-GTI MK1 is a very limited audience. Still, glad I've recorded it for posterity and even more happy that I got to drive it as I've recorded the experience in my mental database, and guess what, it was an eye-opening experience!

Thanks Trivern. I do normally use an external mic but this time I was interviewing an owner so not possible to both have a clip on mic Need to sort this out before the next one so will try an external mic that sits on GoPro rather than depending on internal. In this video I thought the audio improved after the first few mins - there was a very fast main road just behind the hedge which you don't notice as being intrusive when you are in the car park but the GoPro did it's usual thing and amplified the bit you don't want!
