The Misogyny of the Rom Com | Valentines GRWM

It's the valentine's special! Part 2 is coming to a screen near you next week 💕
Rom coms are my escape, I love a good cheesy movie, people falling in love in a beautiful setting and all the big gestures, but the problem is, there's an underlying issue to most of these. Whether its overt or covert, the misogyny is real, and I wanted to have a chat to you about it. Do I watch too many rom coms? Possibly, but if I didn't I wouldn't be so well versed in this topic.

I saw 500 days of summer for the first time like a two years ago. The whole movie I was confused. And then I saw her version of events and I was like “bro, that’s your own fault.” But if I had seen that movie when it came out I probably would’ve thought differently. Now that I’m older, her experience is relatable. Plus he literally moves on as soon as he sees another girl. That to me showed that he wanted to be someone but it didn’t matter who. However, I’m in LOVE with joeseph Gordon Levitt.

Hell, I'm 27 & active in these kinds of female education/empowerment communities online & I didn't know they were meant for us until right now watching this video & reading your comment. Straight up abusing us all up, down & over the abuse scale & it's FOR US? Good God I'm not surprised but it's saddening. It's just ANOTHER thing to add to the billion page list, so I guess it's one of those traumatic numbing realizations. For me at least. Too overloaded at this point.

No, I disagree regarding 500 days of Summer. The movie maker's intentions was for us to see through the main character's eyes and therefore end up being upset at Summer. But we're also supposed to realize that his perspective was subjective and he was wrong about her. That's why we only see the rose colored scenes first and then the bad ones. And so the movie was never meant to make Summer the bad guy in the end. It's supposed to show that he didn't want to see things for what they were and that he imposed his romantic vision and expectations on her, when from the start she was clear about not wanting a relationship. Look it up. Some people just didn't get it because they are too used to "nice guy" characters.

Yes! I came here looking for this comment. It’s one of my favorite movies and it makes me a bit sad that it’s so often misunderstood. I think if sb saw it as a teenager, they should probably give it another go as an adult and see if they still think that Summer is the “villain” of the story.

I enjoy a good rom-com but I agree with all of the points you made. Looking back on the movies I enjoyed in my teen years in the 1990s, I cringe in 2022, haha. The stuff I used to think was ok in my teens, my 40 year old self doesn't have time for. That said, one of my favorite rom-com movies is A Life Less Ordinary. It came out when I was in high school, 1997. If you can find it it's worth a watch. It's not without its own issues, and it may not have aged well in some respects I'm sure, but it's still pretty amusing.

Ooh! I'll have to find it! There's so much stuff in these movies which bothers me now (obviously, or I wouldn't have spent 30 hours making a video about it) and I'm hopeful for more inclusive and less misogynistic ones in the future (without falling down the NLOG trope...)

  • @anulydal

I would love to see more inclusive films in the rom-com genre. It's really beginning to take off in novels more and more. Especially in YA novels which is great. In the 18+ end of the genre it's a bit slower but more and more books are coming out with all kinds of different representation. And thankfully I haven't run into too much of the NLOG trope. Every other one under the sun tho. But that's just romance books. 😆

The fatphobia at this time was so bad that looking back it's bizzare! Bridget Jones was supposed to be ..chubby? I watched that movie at like 12 and thought 'God if that's chubby, what am I!!' The impossible bodies that women were forced to have in Hollywood were and still are INSANE. Hollywood wants women to look like frail, naive little girls and it shuns anyone who doesn't fit that little box. This is why I never judge people for losing weight, or changing their appearance once they're famous or in the Fame scene. I would feel that immense pressure to be 'perfect' to, we all feel it even from this distance, so I can't even imagine.

One of my other favorite classic black-and-white romantic movies is Paris Blues. Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier play expatriate Jazz musicians living in France so they could live freely from racial discrimination. Diahann Carol and JoAnne Woodward (Paul's long-time wife) play their girlfriends who vacation in France. Paul and Sidney make huge life decisions on whether they want to stay in France or go back to America to stay with their girlfriends. I LOVE this film because it is so beautiful, and I love the representation of black love on screen when I see Diahann and Sidney. The Jazz soundtrack is also incredible. It is a beautiful film, and both Sidney and Paul are very charming.

Had to comment to say that in Clueless they weren't half brother and half sister... they were step brother and sister... totally not related by blood at all. Her dad married his mom, but then divorced. So it's not actually gross. It's just a way for the filmmakers to build a relationship between them that somehow made sense.

I think this is just an issue that arose from trying to adapt Emma into a contemporary story. Some of it may not translate well. Although in the book, Mr Knightley is Emma’s brother-in-law as her sister is married to his brother which I think is less creepy . But he’s also significantly older and a friend of her father…. I guess they thought they didn’t have time to establish a sister character or something

Was a while since I watched it, but there's a movie about a gay Chinese-American man who's not out to his family, and his family is pushing him to get married. The relationship that blooms between his sudden fiancée and his American boyfriend and him, I just delighted in. It's by Ang Lee, so. :) "The Wedding Banquet" (1993).

I recently had something like a mental breakdown because I watched a certain anime that portrays a gay couple and I just started to cry and couldn't stop for days when I realized I never had anything like this in my life, the men in this anime were equals, respected each other, made each other better, adored each other. I've never experienced anything like this in my life, my relationships have always been unequal, I've been severely emotionally abused, objectified, treated like I'm a car they're buying, does she tick all the boxes? Is she the status symbol/brood mare or mommy/maid I'm looking for? Over all these cold considerations there was only spread a very thin layer of affection, following the dating conventions from these media, dinners, gifts, when to kiss, when to move in, that could be discarded and replaced with "my crazy ex" the moment the relationship ended, usually when I wasn't compliant anymore. And heterosexual rom coms have actually indoctrinated me into lowering my expectations, follow the script, starve and adjust myself to their expectations, I watched my mother being relentlessly shamed for gaining weight due to an autoimmune condition by my father. Growing up in the 00s I feel like I need to completely reexamine myself and get rid of all this internalized misogyny, it's almost a type of ritualistic, learned self harm. I don't expect to ever find real love because I'm so thoroughly disgusted with men at this point, I just want to heal my heart and try to find joy in other aspects of life.

It's also produced by John Hughes and is not as racist and problematic as 16 Candles

Another rom-com I have to recommend is Little Black Book starring Brittany Murphy. She plays an associate producer for a daytime talk show. She gets curious about her boyfriend's past relationships and gets upset when he won't talk about them. She steals her boyfriend's phone and tells his other girlfriends they will be on the talk show. It isn't until she develops a bond with one of his girlfriends that things get complicated. The climax is the best part because she never wanted revenge. Only the truth... In the end, she walks alone and free and finds a new life and opportunity. The whole movie leaves me with happy tears and also tears because Brittany Murphy was taken from us too soon... It is such a sweet film Spoiler alert: CARLY SIMON APPEARS IN THIS FILM????? BEST! PART! EVER! The whole soundtrack is practically all Carly Simon songs. Also, Brittany has a scene where she sings and it is super nice

I just watched Down With Love today and I LOVE IT!!! If you have ever seen the Natalie Wood and Tony Curtis movie, "Sex and The Single Girl," the Down With Love movie is pretty much SATSG with a different name lol. I like that it's camp too. I am usually not a huge fan of sex comedies because they can often get offensive with the "humor," but I love Down With Love because the humor is intentional and it pays homage to all of the hidden sexual humor in old classic Hollywood rom coms which means the sexual humor is more mild and smart because it takes a light bulb moment to realize where the intentional humor is

really enjoyed this video! a lot of these movies are nostalgic for me, but i don’t have an issue with critiquing them. so glad that a lot of us are able to look at media from our youth with a critical eye. i think it’s more productive to have a conversation instead of just accusing “this generation” or being “too sensitive”. i just don’t see the point of getting defensive over crap media. critical thinking is key! wonderful video essay :)

The nostalgia is strong for me, too, but I totally agree it is worthwhile looking critically at our media. I'm still trying to find a rom com that is 100% good, without people falling into bad tropes. Closest I can think of is Single All the Way but even that falls into a friends to lover trope where yet again the one black character is self sacrificing to the lead protagonist

Ever After was my favourite when it came out ❤ And I loved Clueless as well, but I think I was around 12 at that time. I remember a friend of mine and I dressing like Cher for PE, and we thought we looked fabulous 😁 Anyway, yes, it's incredible (now) how misogynistic a lot of those movies were that were specifically directed at women and girls. Yet back when I was a teenager I didn't even notice. I was completely blind to it, and it seems like the producers were too, when you consider how they didn't at all try to cover it up. It was just so ingrained (is that the right word??) But are they getting any better? I haven't watched any new romcoms in quite a while, so I can't say..

I took the following messages from it: - do not stay with a cheater, you will achieve more in life without them; - stealing ideas from someone else will get punished, don't do it; - as a girl, guys (her colleagues in the first half) will always try to belittle you, but if you believe in yourself and your ideas, you can make it; - you can have a career and still be in a relationship with a guy. Maybe I did not get the terrible message even until today? Please help :)

The ARE, not were unfortunately. And that will not change. Woman has to be young and beautiful and ideally she is obedient and has no own will. That counts as much today as it did 3 years ago. Even worse, if I see young girls today and what the put themselfs through everyday to be attractive. And it gets worse: the wave of dumb "tradwifes" "stay at home girlfriends" and shit like that from women to dumb, lazy and/or naive to not understand the long term effects make me wanna puke.

    - Bring It On is great, although I would've liked it even better if Eliza Dushku's character *had* been a lesbian. It really would've helped make those 'jokes' about her vibe go down a lot easier. - Yes, Shakespeare in Love is fun! Sliding Doors is another good Gwyneth Paltrow movie. Plus, John Hannah is always a win. - Is Some Like It Hot a romcom? Who cares, go watch it anyway. It's one of the best movies ever made. As Hitchcock once said, the 2 most important words in cinema are "Billy" and "Wilder". - Imagine Me & You is the best romcom of the naughties, change my mind. Other watchable romcoms: Love & Basketball, But I'm A Cheerleader, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bringing Up Baby, The Apartment (another Wilder classic), The Worst Person in the World, City Lights, Saving Face, When Night Is Falling, and Show Me Love (a Swedish movie that perfectly encapsulates growing up in the '90s).

EVERYTHING U SAID IS JUST SOOOO ** insert chef’s kiss here ** ❤🖤🤍 absolutely dyingg at what u said about the quirky asian bff w/the colored streak! i’ve seriously never felt more seen or heard.. as an asian who grew up during this time & desperately consumed every romcom that hit theatres, i can 100% confirm that i definitely wanted colored streaks in my hair. literally because of this very reason. little did i know it was just due to the work of whichever males gaze was at play that filming day…. 💀🤦🏻‍♀️ ohhh, if only we alll had the knowledge we have now back then! the world couldn’t handle that tho, tis why they try to stop us, by attacking our confidence asap by negging us with this misogynistic media!!! next, u should take a look at romcoms & shows created & written by women! do like a compare & contrast, might be fun to see the stark differences, or maybe surprising similarities ?

This is exactly why I always hated rom coms and couldn’t stand five seconds of them. My mom always said I was heartless because I’d laugh at them since I was little but I had a ten year older feminist sister who opened my eyes to feminism so young I never saw them as anything other than toxic. She never taught me this in movies I just was taught so young I could spot it faster than my dog spots a squirrel 😂. I love that I was taught that but I was always 💩ed on because I was able to spot it before society catches up and only now that I’m in my 30s do people only now start to say I was right. Even other woman sadly 😢. They admitted they were scared to agree in fear that a guy wouldn’t like them for being perceived as “THE ANGRY FEMINIST” 🤣 even though there was no anger😂

Thank you for this great video. Love this look of yours and the the top (youtube be damned...what’s wrong with seeing a nice rack lmao!!). It sucks realizing a lot of movies growing up were so problematic. I do remember being pretty jaded even in middle school and refusing to see a lot of these because I hated the “she takes her glasses off and straightens her hair and now she’s beautiful” BS. Can’t wait to see the Dawson’s Creek video. I watched a few episodes back when it was on when I was in middle school but I was too edgy for it lol. But I watched it on dvd when blockbuster online was a thing in the late 2000s and really liked it. And fun fact-I found out Kerr Smith grew up in my hometown! Hah

Thank you! I remember having a love/hate relationship with these movies when I was a kid/young teenager too but that was for more nlog reasons and I got mad that the women had to be a particular kind of femininity to "get the man". Dawson's Creek surprised me given the time it came out honestly, more progressive than I was anticipating but also so very problematic haha

Regarding Grease, Danny did actually turn Jock briefly because he thought thats what Sandy wanted but she went full rock chick at the end so he didnt have to. Grease 2 however, turns this on its head, its the nerd guy that wants the rock chick, leader of the Pink Ladies but hes not one of the guys yet so he has to buy a motorbike, learn how to ride it and do stunts and dress cool in order to draw her in so its not always on the girl to change. Side note: not a fan of Romance movies except one which lands in the sub genre: Horror Romance called Warm Bodies, that was okay only because I prefer horror to romance any day.

My all time favorite rom com is My Best Friend's Wedding, and I get the fight between women for a guy trope, but I will die on this hill for that movie. It was the first rom com I saw that the main girl didn't get the guy and was still happily dancing at the end. It gave me so much hope because Julia's pursuit of Michael wasn't for romantic love, she was ''losing'' her best friend. He was doing things now that she wasn't and he's going to become preoccupied with having a family and a wife, while she'll be alone. He won't have time to meet with her or go on crazy vacations, things are going to change and she didn't like that. So, by convincing herself that she romantically loves him she tried to keep him with her by sabotaging the wedding. It's not emotionally mature by any means, but she was just scared of things changing. And in the end, he picked the girl he romantically loved, not out of some obligation to Julia. And despite all that, they stayed friends.

Ahhhh, I HATE Love Actually! There are so many things in it that are awful. But I have a funny story: We watched it as a family and my brother and me got talking after it about the woman who left her date for her brother because he wanted her to be there. And my brother looked me straight in the eye and said: If you ever do something stupid like that just because I pulled a stunt like that, I will be mad for eternity. LOL So, whilst I still find that movie deeply upsetting, some parts of it I can watch - not many though. ;)

Love actually is for me a masterpiece...it does not even try to be romantic. It blatantly hits you over the head by "selling" the most outrageous things to you that have absolutely nothing to do with love....and manages to fool so many people. I never understood it as romantic. When I watched it, I thought it was intentional to make people realise, that those stories have nothing to do with love and I was surprised how many people loved it as a love story. like...WTF

@@endlessstudent3512 That makes so much sense and explains why it always ticked all the wrong boxes for me. Thanks for making it that much clearer in my mind. It never came across as romance for me (similar to all the new "hype" about "bad boys" or Colleen Hoover novels). Maybe I was too young when I first saw it to not be able to articulate my problem with the content of the movie. So, I agree: I can't understand how people treat this movie as a romance.

Love the video but slight correction for chasing amy, she didn't "turn" for a guy, she was bi, and for both her women partners and because of male past partners (assuming she was just done with men in general but not necessarily not being not attracted to them as a whole), the movie was never about anyone's orientation changing but about a man being so stupid he let dumb things that didn't matter ruin what could have been a great relationship for him if he wasn't a terrified easily intimidated manchild. The only comments about anyone's orientation changing are made by stupid people in the movie, intentionally.

Speaking about fat women being actively sexual and confident about it, what do you all think about Donna Meagle from Parks & Rec? She's one of my favourite characters on that show and I've always considered her a bad ass, but watching this video I wonder if she was written like that as a joke too? I'd love to read someone else's insight on this, since it's been a while since I watched Parks.

It's funny to watch this as someone who now realizes that some people FEEL somehow romantic towards each other (or have really sexual attraction towards random people). For me the "falling in love" part was just a fiction trope like "the overprotective father" in 10 things. That's the reason why I have to contradict one thing: friends to lovers is the only way I experience relationships. And I love it depicted on screen. The closeness, the mutual respect, the slow evaluation of boundaries. The trust. I love it, but please without the part where they suddenly find each other boring. But maybe realizing that their love ist worthy and they want to be in a relationship, no matter how it looks (sexual or platonic)? Friendship is so underrated. And it can be kind of romantic, too. Tbh, the most "romantic" movie I watched was one that left open what kind of relationship the girls had (do not remember the title unfortunately, was a 90s movie and I was a child / young teenager) as well as The Body (in terms of friendship). AND I like Clueless and do not think it is that creepy, because there are just 2-3 years between them (Josh just started College, Cher is 16) and they never grew up like siblings. Their parents were married for a few month and afterwards Josh was a casual visitor findig a sanctuary from his mothers new lovers. I get this part, too. They form a kind of friendship before they realize they want to be more. PS. The worst Rom Com ever was The Ugly Truth. I hated it immediately. Grease had at least some music although I never liked it either because of how it ended.

I hate Rom-Coms! The Wife is always trying to get me to watch them, but they're sooo formulaic! They hate each other-they fall in love-they have a misunderstanding and break up-they get back together. Every. Single. Time! However, I do have a few that I enjoy. "She's the One", "A Life Less Ordinary", "Along Came Polly", "Better Off Dead", "Boomerang", "Coming to America ", "Doc Hollywood", "High Fidelity", "The Mexican", "A Thin Line Between Love and Hate", "Zack and MIRI Make a Porno", and "The Brothers Bloom".

I came across this (👆) via another feminist-centric video, & I must say this was a *VERY* rough watch. Now though I don’t necessarily agree w/ the majority of today’s feminists’ views, I don’t necessarily oppose their content either. When it’s done well, I’ve been known to seek them out (e.g. the aforementioned video that got me here). Given the right content, I don’t mind hearing things that go against my general beliefs (like most people in my experience). For this reason, I have 3ish points that I’d like you to consider: 1) Now no pun intended Ms. Claire, but you’re having & eating your cake when it comes to female characters. It’s a bit much to complain about the stereotypical pretty, subservient, ‘at the whims of her male counterpart & his patriarchy’ female character, while also taking umbrage w/ characters who don’t hold those traits (of whom are played by actual people who also may hold your beliefs). Even if your points are coherent, perhaps eloquent, making both of those larger arguments in the same video is too big a roadblock for anyone who isn’t already on your side to cross. That contradiction smears every sparkle of validity presented. 2a) More importantly… Stories will often present what they deem to be bad, so that the opposite can be taken-away from. Sometimes it’s even found in subtext; not a grand reveal necessarily. For many consumers, that’s a tastier treat. Seeing something that you deem ‘problematic’ doesn’t mean that’s the apart of that film’s “messaging”, when in fact, it could be the opposite. Your committing logical myopia, & I saw this in use many times throughout this video. Now since I’m sure you disagree w/ my assessment, fine… 2b) A good story will emulate real life. It allows the consumers to relate, in turn to become immersed. You think the patriarchy is real, yes? Western society is chock full of gendered oppression, right? Well in that case, a film loaded w/ the most pro-feminist message, reel-to-reel w/ intersectional greatness, is no longer a romantic comedy. You’d be watching a fantasy sans dragons, or mysticism (aka a shitty fantasy). Anyway, at least consider what I’ve said. Thank you. BONUS POINT-Overusing/highlighting buzz words like “misogyny” (e.g. your thumbnail) is cringy by anyone not already agreeing w/ you (I’d guess by some who are of a like-mind too). It reeks of trying to hard. Food for thought.
