We’ve had 3 minis. Lost our second in November at almost 16 years. She loved being carried upright like a baby so she could see over your shoulder. She was so sassy, she grew up with our kids, jumped on the trampoline with the kids. They are great with kids. You’re right about the lapdog thing, I called her my sidecar dog because she set beside me all the time. They also are very easy to potty train. I set a timer for every 45 minutes to take her out when she was a pup. She never had an accident in thr house until her very last day. She was my dog. I carried her the day we brought her home at 8 weeks old until she breathed her last breath.

What a wonderful comment, my heart ❤️ My dad had a miniature schnauzer, they had him for 16 years, back in the seventies. He still talks about him all the time. We have a Maltese now, and I love him so so much. I dream of a schnauzer one day, too 🐶

As an owner of minis for 27+ years please note that it’s a common trait for schnauzers to be “yappy”. Not all do but it’s definitely common amongst the breed. Also, not all schnauzers dislike being handled or picked up. Ours have always been affectionate and easily handled, love to snuggle etc.

I had a mini schnauzer, barked when doorbell rang. Was good with waking you up. Did not smell, shed, did not care for picking up, but definitely was a bed sleeper. Basically an all around good, smart dog 🐶, lived for 16 years, I’m still grieving for him. 🕊🌈🙏🏽❤️

I decided I wanted the dog! Went to the library and got books on different breeds. I chose the schnauzer. Soon after my daughter found on the internet not far from where we lived schnauzers for sale. She was one of two left. I've never regretted bringing this dog home. She was never a problem. Very intelligent. Easy to potty train. Affectionate. Loving. Obedient. Just a great dog for a sidekick! Loved my company. She thought it was her company and was excited to see them come over to play with her. LOL yes a perfect Watch Dog. She has a very loud voice into alarming that something or somebody was in the yard! She told on them! But she was not a yapper!, I never had trouble with her chewing on the house furniture when teething or at any other time. Never had any problems with her stealing my shoes. Just amazing for a puppy! She played with her toys. She was just a wonderful loyal cute sweet little baby dog.. I'm not afraid to say she wasn't exceptional and a perfect dog! She was with me 24/7. It was as if she could read my mind. I had a for 10 years. And never regret it a moment of it! I lost her about 8 weeks ago. And I miss her terribly. It breaks my heart to think that she's no longer with me! I trying to persuade myself that she was just a dog. Not to grieve because she was just a dog. No she was not just a dog! She was my companion! And a loyal companion at that! I love this little creature with all my heart. And I miss her so much. I don't know if it would hurt any worse and what it did if she would have been a human baby! She was so part of me. There will never be another dog to take her place!

I lost my Basset Hound 15 years ago and fall of 2020 felt like I was ready for a companion. I had no intention of a Mini Schnauzer - was not even in my radar. After a series of offensive run-ins with breeders of a different breed I began doing more research and going back over old research. Realized that the one dog consistently appearing on every list I had - Mini Schnauzer. Tomorrow 7/15/21 my dear Ulrica or Uli and I will have been together for 2 weeks. This beautiful and amazing creature has taken over my heart. She is amazing. It’s like I have literally waiting my entire life to found this little one.

Raised Schnauzers for many years. My first boy was in 1981, after that only Schnauzers would do. I'd say you forgot two things, Schnauzers are fiercely loyal and smart. In fact, while watching the Westminster Dog Show several years back, I believe it was John Hurley who said that Schnauzers are the dog with a human brain. I learned that if left to their own devices they WILL entertain themselves, so make certain they have plenty of toys. I have loved every Schnauzer I've had, they were all pets and are my first love among dogs.

Something happened to him as a pup it sounds like! Schnauzers are traditionally very affectionate & loving. Both of mine prefer to be next to or on you. You do have to be careful handling a mini & pick them up in an appropriate manner...supporting their back legs. Mini's are guard dogs, plain and simple.

I had one. She never growled at me but growled at others approaching me a couple of times. She was definitely a lap dog and preferred to be carried over walking - especially when she got older. Agree with no smell or shedding. I’ve heard they can be yappy but mine wasn’t. She barked a couple of times, as is said here, when someone came to the door. All in all a great breed!

Our mini is 12 1/2 and the best dog we have ever had. He absolutely loves to be carried like a baby with his paws draped over my shoulder. Agree with the guy in the video. Our mini is not yappy but he does let you know when someone at the door and take a bit of time to stop barking when strangers (to him) come in. He also is great with other little dogs but barks like crazy at big dogs and multiples. Go figure. Regrettably, he has been diagnosed with a rare cancer for little dogs and we have been told he only has anywhere from 4-9 months. We are going to enjoy every day we have with him and give him the best quality of life possible. He has quite a bit of energy now and walks twice a day for a total of 2.5 miles a day. We would not hesitate to have another mini one day.

100% agree with you on most things. Very protective in that will bark if someone walks by apartment door. Clean - impressively clean inside. And doesn’t have doggy smells. They are impressive intelligent - almost human intelligent. It’s not just a dog - it’s becomes a friend. One thing with yours - get him trimmed man. That hair is too long. They are meant to be shorter haired. Specially the face except the beard and eye brows.

I've had several schnauzers and I absolutely love them. they make for a great security system! the one I have right now, Major is a spoiled brat at times. insists on going for a walk everyday and is very very vocal! this is a breed that I will always keep. they are exceptionally one of the best family dog you can own. the biggest downside to them is when they get loose. Major refuses to come back and I have to go hunt him down.... when they put their noses to the ground, they're brains seem to turn off.... but I love them all the same!

Reading the comments about picking up. Disagree. Both mine were very independent and with few exceptions didn’t want to be picked up. They loved their independence to walk. That’s not to say they did love snuggling but they came to you, not you went to them. If they were walking slow and I’d say ‘I’ll pick you up if you want’ they actually would walk faster…. They are very independent. And as for walking - ours gets three walks a day. Did I say intelligent - we go to visit my parents every few months - so a big break in between. One street away she would jump up at the window of the car and start crying and pawing the window as she recognised the street. Or take us right through the town centre to the other end to a pet store we hasn’t been to for months.

  • @bluemush86
    @bluemush863 жыл бұрын

True my schnauzer didn’t mind being picked up too, you have to be careful though and if you cradle them properly one arm under belly the other in front of back legs and pick up with surety he was ok. But if he sensed you didn’t know what you were doing he would growl. 😂 they are the greatest breed to have. He was a little diva full of energy, as he got older he had arthritis so fish oil, rosehip was given and his back legs wore out and they started to tremble. He was the best thing that came into our family and is dearly missed, they are very playful (hide and seek), smart so teaching them tricks but he was also sassy so if he felt like he would do the trick if not he would just look at me and walk away.

Hey! When I saw your dog I said to myself this guy has abducted my dog, oh no! that is not possible my dog is sitting next to me, this guy lives on the other side of the world, so my dog might have a twin. Yours looks so much alike. All or most of the remarks I read tell me mine IS a genuine schnauzer all point to the same hereditary traits. I was in doubt since we picked him up homeless about a year ago, we call him Rex. Thanks for your nice explanations about this race. We live at Athens, Greece. Regards, Andreas A. Tsatsos

I understand that your doggie does not like to be picked up and growls to let the person know that he doesn't like it, however, this is definitely NOT a common trait of the Miniature Schnauzer breed. If he does not like to be picked up, it is likely because when he was a puppy someone that picked him up on a regular basis did not hold him in a manner that encouraged trust. I just don't like that for those who are considering a Miniature Schnauzer watching this video would steer away because of what you said. Mine loves to be picked up and held in fact, the two before this one and the one in my childhood years all loved being picked up to be held.

I totally agree. My mini schnauzer loves to be picked up, held, cuddled with, and is very protective. He is not an aggressive dog, but will chase a cat, or smaller animal. They tend to get along with other animals. They are great around children and are easy to take along as they are small, but not tiny. My mini sleeps in my bed. He was crate trained/potty trained within two weeks. Very smart dog. Treat and positive reinforcement motivated. He loves his pit brother and cat brother.

He's rough and tumble all the way. He's built tuff. He a perfect dog Just like yours. I love the color of yours. Mine is the same. My only bummer is when it's just us two he wont play ball. They have natural oil that causes them to have a scent/smell. I bathe mine and the minute he goes outside, he picks up the outdoor odors. There are perfumes for dogs, and if you keep him trimmed low in hot weather, he'll smell less Otherwise, wipe him down after coming on from outside and just tolerate the smell. Diet plays a role in their odor too. I have mine on a diet rich in omega 3. His breath smells like omega 3.

I've had 4 now, one is 16 years old, and mine love to be held and are total lap dogs! They could snuggle all day. My male used to growl when some would pick him up but never with me bc he knew better than to try it with me lol

I had a schnoodle who passed away last May one month short of his 17th birthday. Have a new one now who is a puppy at 4 months. You are right. He does look like a schnoodle. Almost like my boy who passed away in May.

Miniature schnauzers grow up to 20 lbs. If not groomed like a traditional mini schnauzer cut, they will look like other breeds. The best way to know the difference is to see how their classic eyebrows and "mustache/beard" grows. From this video, I see the classic eyebrows.

If your dog isn't a show dog, no need to strip their coat or give them the Schnauzer cut. I chose not to show mine, so she got to enjoy a puppy cut most of her nearly 15 years.
