Nick Johnston is one of the hottest players in the scene today and we had an awesome chat last month at GuitCon 2018.
It was really eye opener to know that Nick never had a formal guitar education and how that shaped his unique sound and harmonic choices. He learned all this stuff on his own and then reverse engineered it to learn the language and be able to communicate with other musicians.
We also discussed his songwriting process, how he composes without the guitar and the challenges of releasing your own instrumental music.

My rule is that motif and rhythm must support a lyrical foundation and a vocal lead. Best lead solos come out of great songs. Instrumental music is never as enthralling as soaring power vocals, like mine.
