The mind-blowing skills of the château artisans. Château Restoration #15

The mind-blowing skills of our roofing artisans are on display as they follow a centuries old tradition. The roof starts to be returned to its original 18th century shape and we start cleaning up the château grounds after a long winter.

We are watching real craftsmanship happening - like nothing any of us have seen generally in our lifetimes ! I bought a small 1850 home in PA many years ago, and in doing the renovation it needed a new stairs handrail built - the old one had gone - I knew what I needed done, but my carpenter was aghast - "nobody can build such a dainty thing these days" he said while laughing at me ! So - it did not happen sadly. That house is long since sold, but I've never forgotten that so much is lost because no one trains for such workmanship these days - we all know what a dainty Georgian staircase should look like after all !

One of my favorite things to see on the restoration projects I have worked on here in France, as well as my own property, are the initials (or signatures some of which are emblems) of the artisans who worked on the construction of the buildings in prior centuries. I'm glad to see the artisans involved with Purnon are doing the same. Cheers-

Thank you! It's very important to us that they record their names. We can see the names of earlier generations who worked on Purnon inscribed in the stone often with the dates when they worked. It's fabulous for us to know that some of their descendants still live locally and can come and admire the incredible work of earlier generations.

That work on restoring the roof profile to its original is nothing short of marvellous. The artisans clearly know what they are doing and - obviously take pride in their workmanship. I know you know this, but how fortunate you are to have them at your building site. They would each have likely completed a five-year (or longer) apprenticeship in their chosen trade.

Hi everyone, please respect each other's views. On this KZread channel we all love French heritage and we want to preserve and restore it. We have put our life savings and all our energy into saving Chateau de Purnon. But we could not do it alone. We acknowledge the incredible support we have received from the French Government (via DRAC), the Fondation du Patrimonie and other philanthropic groups. Indeed, their support is listed at the end of every video that we post. We also honour the incredible work of our French architect and our French artisans whose skills and expertise are helping us save this incredible place. We are also thrilled that people from around the world are sharing our journey online. Best wishes to everyone!

The new roof shape is definitely an improvement, both visually and structurally. I missed part of the explanation of the zinc guttering. I heard the talk about horseshoes, but I don’t understand what they’re for? And they don’t look like gutters that I’m used to. There’s no U-shape to carry the water, how do they work? Thanks for sharing the project. The place is going to be beautiful when you’re done!

  • 2 ай бұрын

Thanks for your comment and interest. The horseshoe shape helps to maintain the integrity of the shape of the lead over time. Regarding the guttering - the key point was that huge zinc guttering was added at the end of the nineteenth century. This guttering changed the shape of the roof and damaged the facades. The new guttering is made of copper. It is much smaller and subtler. It does not threaten the facades. It has the appearance of conventional guttering in its form. There was a brief image of the roofers working on the copper gutters - they were handling downpipes during that segment. This new guttering has enabled the roof to be returned to its original shape. We hope that addresses your questions.

@ Ok, that does answer the horseshoe question & I did see the copper downpipes but none of the horizontal gutters, so I wasn’t sure where they were being attached, or how they would look. I’m sure you’ll feature them in a future video when it’s all done, so thank you for your response & for all the work you’re doing on this gorgeous old chateau. 😄

Several of our workers are doing training while they are working here at Purnon. They spend several days each month at school and sometimes share the photos of the training they are doing with us. We are incredibly proud of the skill and expertise of our artisans and we hope our project here at Chateau de Purnon is helping to keep these trades alive. Thank you for following our journey.

Astounding that past generations of engineers? didn't understand the harm their renovations or updates were doing structurally. Is there a school for these artisans? They seem young and one often hears of arts dying out.

There is an institution called "les Compagnons du Devoir et du Tour de France". There, young artisans (they can start at 15 yo) learn from older ones. They spend several years learning and practicing, traveling through the country. This institution dates back to the Middle Ages, to the time of the cathedrals.

The English pronounciation sound like prenon to me😅 the U pronouciation is muted in english so each time she pronounce the chateau name I hear prenon! For me the pronounciation it's like pure , pure non at best even tho there is no y in the intonation so instead of pyure its pure. Purnon.

Let the yard out to local famers with horses and goats to keep the grass down, placing temporary fencing. Farmers benefit, animals benefit and cost you little to nothing.

Im sure they are the experts, but putting lead back on your roof seems like a lil bit of a bad idea. Why not aluminum or straight copper, or tin, or anything but a metal that gets into your blood and will cause a lot of problems? lolz.
