I used to listen to your voice telling me stories when I was drunk, then in detox. Now sober. Thank God for you, brother. One day at a time. ❤
My father did brown river gun boat duty. Utterly terrifying especially because in Vietnam you can't see anything in the jungle on both sides. He survived after coming home to a hateful crowd and that was the straw that broke my fathers soul. 8 years later he took his life. Apologized for being a failure to family and country

I can remember we were living out of 135 and dad and mom were sitting in the living room talking and I looked over and said hey Daddy look there's a gray spot on that sheet and he turned around and looked and it was a Vietnam picture that Grace but thanks to the black and white TV was actually blood dad told me to turn my head not to be watching that TV at all. What we called, Fog of War
I normally don’t partake in internet commentary but I feel compelled to share that it’s my 15 year wedding anniversary to my childhood sweetheart. We married at 19, he deployed to Iraq a few months later , a year and a half later returning back to the states stationed in Kansas at our apartment far away from home in Ohio . He unexpectedly took his life innthe midst of a terrible flashback from the horrors he experienced in Iraq. It was the eve of Thanksgiving . Every anniversary has its heavy affect on me year after year to say the least but this year I felt a new form of comfort and sense of calmness listening to your channel … as well as Wartime Stories Channel .. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to hear you mentioning Wartime Stories channel. You both are truly masters of your craft and I’m so grateful for the impact you both have had on me . I know my husband would have been a huge fan as well ❤ keep it up fellas , you’re a gift to us all.

My dad was in the Air Force for about 25 years. He was stationed in England during the 60s. He lived on base and his neighbors job was to investigate alien/paranormal activity. My dad asked him what he believed after working in that field for years. He said, officially i have to keep an open mind, but off the record there were places he would never let his family live. I never met the man because i wasn't born until 1980 but all my siblings remember this interaction and the impact it had on my parents.

My dad served at Fort Dix in NJ during the Vietnam War. He had an experience and went to his commanding officer. Yeah, they didn't believe him and it didn't go well for him. The Army has a "Keep it to yourself. You saw nothing!" mentality. It sucks! Thank you for your service. My 17-year-old son has been donating to your charity that helps the war veteran who goes into bad places and saves civilians in the crosshairs of war. He had a medical issue recently so I'm not sure if he will be able to continue the support or not. If he cannot I will put the $15 monthly support fee in his account. I love Mr. Ballen’s videos. He’s so detailed, you feel like you’re actually there.
My dad was on the USS Yorktown during the battle of Midway.He had a model that he put together of the Yorktown. Yowards the end of his life, he asked me to get it and was showing me what he was doing while the Yorktown was sinking. He said he was on the right side of the ship on that weapon and was shooting at the zero's. Well many many years later and well after my dad passed away my wife was watching something on the Yorktown and they said they hadn't realized there were still men on the Yorktown if it wasn't for the guy shooting at the zero's. My dad told me a lot of things but i wish he could of said it earlier in life. Thats his side of that war. Also he wasn't supposed to be on the Yorktown but when Pearl harbour got it he was put on the Yorktown. He also told me he used to pray the rosary to see his birthday. My dad was born June 6th 1919. The Yorktown sank June 7th.

My father was on the USS Benevolence hospital ship that sunk near the Faroe Islands. I remember that day. The waters are very rough and it would not be surprising that bodies were not found. The ship sank in 15 minutes and 23 died. August 1950.
I discovered Mr Ballen during covid. I binge watched all the videos and impatiently waited for new content. Thank you for entertaining an old lady locked dewn during covid!
The only weird, sort of military-related story I have was when I was in the St Louis airport at 5:00 in the morning, headed to West Germany. I worked under contract as a civilian for the DoD. There was a magazine store that was still closed, on the way to my gate. Out in front of it was a stack of newspapers in an honor box. I looked down and thought it was rather odd that they had the next day's date on them. Not wanting a paper, I went on to my gate. A couple hours later, I came back to the now opened store for something to read. The honor box was now completely empty. I asked the guy what happened to all the newspapers and he said they won't get delivered until around 8:00 a.m. I said, but there was a stack here a couple hours ago. He said it wasn't possible. He signs for them every morning and said nothing was there when he opened the shop. Pretty strange. I think he was convinced I was off my rocker or something.

The delivery guy arrived earlier than the normal 8 am timeslot (the usual guy was out sick) he sat them down in the honor box in front of the shop, waited a few for the shop owner, and ran to the bathroom to drop a load when you would have been walking by shortly after. Then minutes since you pass thru, he came back out, still no shop owner, and said screw it, he'll come back later when someone is here before taking back all the newspapers in the honor box. There ya go.

Is there not weird things at Camp Pendleton
This story is legendary but also easily explained. When the mechanic left the blimp that solved the total weight issue but it did not, however, solve the weight distribution problem. When the blimp went down to investigate the oil slick one of the pilots went out to the side of the blimp to lean out and get a better look while the second pilot would stay in the gondola. This drastically started to shift the center of gravity for the blimp and it began to list to that side since there was only one man inside when there’s supposed to be two. When it did so the second pilot began falling/stumbling in that direction or he saw the outside pilot begin to fall over the rail with it listing and made the poor decision to try and go physically help him. In either case as he fell or ran that direction the blimp listed even more drastically that way to the point that both men quickly spilled over the side. There is evidence to support this. Firstly, the wired megaphone was off of its receiver in the blimp. It’s believed that when the second pilot began to fall to the side of the blimp he likely grabbed it in an attempt to self arrest. Secondly, there was only one hat still hanging on its hook in the gondola. This supports the theory that one pilot went outside intentionally after putting on his hat and the other was forced outside or was in a rush to get outside. Thirdly, the blimp rockets upwards after dipping down to investigate the oil slick. This is because it suddenly loses the combined weight of the two pilots. The blimp goes up into the atmosphere until there is little atmospheric pressure and then gas begins to escape the blimp rapidly causing it to dip back down and become malformed. The men are never found despite wearing life vests but this happens literally all the time. The ocean is MASSIVE and the men are wearing navy blue uniforms in a big blue ocean. There are a lot of witness testimonies that conflict with each other on whether the pilots were in the blimp and when. Some witnesses say they saw no pilots even immediately after take off, some say they only saw one, some say three, and all these accounts are at different times with different answers. This is why eye witness testimony is basically useless unless there is evidence to support it.

I started listening to Wartime Stories on KZread starting in February. It’s a wonderful channel. I’m so happy it’s the newest addition to Ballen Studios!!
Super glad you've found Wartime Stories, been following that channel for ages now, love it! Love that Luke can now be part of the Ballen family and get some well-earned recognition!

Possibly the best story teller in the world. I like to think I have a good imagination but when Mr ballen tells it I get a perfect picture.. his content is so efficient u can tell he puts his heart in every story.. his enthusiasm is authentic.. stay dope Mr ballen.. 💯💯
I'm glad Mr Ballen found an outlet and is able to live a fulfilling life with his family. There's a lot of us out there that didn't get out so easily.
Here’s my theory: A spy or sympathizer snuck into the gondola, hence the extra weight. They were aware of the Japanese submarine or wanted to sabotage the blimp and waited until the routine flight to ambush the pilots. Once incapacitated, instead of bombing the sub they put down flares or the flares were the last thing the pilots were able to do before capture. Afterward they commandeered the blimp and threw the men and themselves overboard to evade capture and info on what happened.

2:58 funny you should mention the Good Year blimps mate because sometime after the crash L-8 was repaired and turned into a Good Year blimp for a number of years before she was eventually restored back to her original navy shape and put on static display in a WW2 museum where the mysterious vanishing Ernest Cody and Charles Adams will likely remain unsolved just like the disappearance of the Mary Celeste crew
Been listening to wartime stories for awhile now and kept thinking "this is a podcast MrBallen needs under his studio" and low and behold you got it. So excited to see what comes with him being able to hopefully get some help and what comes from that.
Over 9m followers...Wow! I remember when barely anyone knew about this guy. So happy for you man! Appreciate you!
I'm so glad you brought Luke into the fold! I've been watching his videos since the beginning when he asked Rich, Mikey, and Simon for permission to emulate the Bedtime Stories logo and animation for his channel. That man worked very hard to build his channel by himself, doing all of the research, scripts, animation, and editing personally until he could afford to hire a team to help. It's really amazing how great the quality of his videos were then, and still are. Yay Ballen Studios family!

@StanleyDuboise Well then, with a name like that, I have to check them out.
My theory (which I'm sure others have offered by now) is that the person dropping the flares somehow started to fall out of the gondola, the other person tried to save them but was dragged out in the attempt (and they both subsequently drowned). This accounts for the rapid ascent. Later as the pilots found it, it developed a leak (from altitude?), and started descending. And Aida was simply mistaken in what she saw. She thought the silhouettes of seats or something else were people. Occam's razor.
@panzer948
12 күн бұрын
Agree 100%. Heck the photo he showed of the actual blimp damaged shows what could be interpreted as people too, but is likely seats or equipment. I too think they fell out, either near the surface, which would explain its rapid rise, or something else went wrong and they lost control for it to go where the air was to thin to breath and they possibly jumped out.. sadly like how the 911 workers did to relieve themselves from the fire or smoke from the burning building.
@kaibacorporation3000

@akiramenai I agree with your theory, well said.
@funilyily

@@panzer948maybe the smaller theory is the flare caught fire in the blimp and so they tried putting it out ,but they couldn’t see well enough and panicked they fell out near the surface , and the blimp just rose until it hit max altitude where it started crash landing rapidly
@GOBIRDSPHILS

I like this theory a lot. Or instead of falling out they both jumped intentionally to go AWOL/desert and the fisherman was in on it. Picked them up then lied to corroborate their "oil slick" radio call. They could have set the blimp to asend, jumped out, and hitched a ride to shore, change clothes, blend in , then abscond. The lack of both bodies since the had life preserves bothers me.
@knowsmebyname

I like the stow away theory. The blimp was over weight by one person and then a witness says she saw 3 people has to be explained. Remember this was a war craft and we were in a two front war. Why would it not be the first thought that the war ship was attacked?
Me and my BFF stay up and watch Ballen before bed over screenshare :)

I have a theory. There was a stowaway that had forced them to take their life vests off, then pushed them out in the ocean, killing them so they wouldn't be witnesses. Then as the blimp crashed, maybe he was able to escape and blend in with the crowd.

I wonder what personal/escape type parachute technology was like in 42? Did they have backpack chutes? And if so, do you think that maybe the reason it went so high into the sky was so that said stowaway could jump out? Of course it’s all just speculation, but seems plausible enough assuming the science checks out. I don’t know much about parachuting back then tho. Or today for that matter. Just throwing it out there.

I recently read a comment from a combat infantryman I believe, on reddit, about his experience with an abandoned British Colonial-era military personnel village next to an abandoned airfield his troops were basing in, North of Saddam’s hometown, while serving in 2003/04. Military company higher ups took base in the actual houses, and after a sleepless week, many reported running footsteps at night, slamming doors, and finally, children’s faces in the window. This is the US Army, so they must have been severely affected (if not by enemy combat) in performance as they managed to get upline to approve the company move out. Not only that, they arranged nightly perimeter patrol, where soldiers would hear children playing, and occasionally be hit by pebbles that bounced off their full-military amour. Nothing was ever detected on thermal, scopes, nothing. I wish I could remember OP’s handle, his troop had an experience with a large shadow with red eyes that was keeping pace with them, following them through the village streets at night. It looked confused they could see it, and it reduced one man to a sobbing, shrieking mess. OP put it best: “the trauma of combat was explainable, but this was completely unexplainable.”
I came across this channel by chance and fell in love with the way you tell stories. It feels like you would be such an interesting friend to have! Thank you for what you do, it’s put me through the toughest time of my life this year and I appreciate that a lot.
I almost always zone out listening to MrBallen. His story telling voice puts me into some other kind of state of being where I really want to follow along but get distracted easily by his story telling voice. It seems strange and mysterious and only seems to happen with MrBallen’s videos almost always. It’s rare when I can focus but when I do I really enjoy the content. Any recommendations to help solve this would be much appreciated. Thank you!

@albtckl and others. First of all I want to sincerely thank you for your service. I’m just a 38 year old handicapped attorney with a few metal parts where some of my bones used to be (early onset arthritis that was diagnosed and treated way too late). Why am I saying this? Because I never have and never will have anything close to military service and therefore base my conclusions on historical and anecdotal information. Still I respect the Hell out of those that serve. It’s my personal opinion that we’ve reached a point in our history and evolution where war, especially on an international scale, is a COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE abhorrence that’s beyond any reasonable or justifiable rationale, and that the wealthy (corporations, politicians, unknown powers) boost global economic prosperity by sending humans (many of whom are kids) to kill other humans…. I honestly can’t articulate how deep and prolific a sickness must be to orchestrate such horrors. I can’t even properly describe how fervently opposed to that sickness I am, but I’m probably rambling. My screen is small and my font is smaller, so I digress no further… So despite my hopes for a world where all soldiers are trained to do something other than kill, dominate, and destroy people of other nations, I’m super glad we have individuals like you guys that keep us all safe with the way the world is now. P.S. HUGE supporter of the second amendment. I’m anti-war. Not anti-protection of self, family, home, etcetera.

Mrballen never disappoints. What the best about his story is that he was just guy that took chance after chance and capitalized on every opportunity
It should also be mentioned that there was another eyewitness, seventeen-year-old Edward Taylor, who also claimed that while watching the dirigible fall through binoculars, he saw three people moving in the cabin.
Dude, you were a beast in SOG I once saw this dude round a corner of a building and I saw this figure following him. It looked exactly like that Grim Reaper thing only without a scythe. Alternatively, the witness was mistaken and there were never three people - perhaps because she knew how many crew would be in a blimp, expected to see three, and in the excitement of the moment, her brain filled in the blanks, especially when the windows of that gondola were quite small, so seeing occupants wouldn't be that easy. Many witnesses are shockingly unreliable and see what they expected to see, rather than what was really there. Still doesn't explain what happened to the two crew, but the convenient way they left the mechanic behind suggests that they might have wanted to disappear, and made their exit by parachute, long before the blimp crashed.
