Ойын-сауық

Despite what the Ottawa name translates to, the Muskegon River was an integral part of the development of America.

    It was! Although being right on the bridge next to traffic made it a bit challenging to get the shot without getting tons of traffic noise. However, it was very fortunate, because there aren't many bridges over the Muskegon in this part of the state, and this one just happened to give us a perfect and close view of the convergence between the Muskegon and Hersey rivers, which turns out to be a place of some historical significance.

    Being a kid of Reed City, I grew up running around Hersey area at one time there was a old steel and concrete bridge at the end of 3 mile rd that ran into the west side of Hersey... and as a kid my brother and I crossed it. It was so bad then that some of the concrete was falling of in big patches as we crossed.

    The abutments are still remnants right along side of this bridge. I noticed it just after we finished videoing. It appears that they built the new bridge parallel to the old one so as to not disrupt traffic during construction. Which is good, because there aren't that many bridges over the Muskegon up here. LOL!

    So happy to see you are back in Michigan and doing well. I love these two vids on the beautiful Muskegon and Hersey rivers. Seeing this beauty makes me miss Michigan so much. I moved to Texas in 2015 and let me tell you it is HOT here and very conservative for an Ann Arbor liberal. LOL However, I don't miss the Winters.

    Mary, It is good to be back home again! So glad you enjoyed this episode too! If it's any consolation, I've been in Texas when it snowed, quite a lot in fact. So the heat does abate occasionally there. Of course we were in north Texas (Dennison) at the boyhood home of Dwight Eisenhower. So, depending on where you are in the state, weather can be a lot different. By the way, we passed right new Ann Arbor just yesterday on the way home from a business trip. Really hoping to get to spend some time there eventually and shoot some video.

    Wow, thanks so much! I thought it was a great setting, and we had an almost perfect day for weather. Every story starts with asking a question, like what if, or how did this come to be, or what happened before. Then the research just sort of leads you wherever it is going to, and by the time you're done you just hope you have an interesting story. It certainly was interesting to me.

    Okay, that's weird. I took that link directly from the video manager page of the video, but you're right, it's a bad link for some reason. So, going straight to the video itself the link is kzread.info/dash/bejne/opaE2LZscZTAlpc.html I test that and it worked, so I feel a little confident it will work, although not completely.

    Interesting continuation of the previous videos :) the pronunciation thing being a way to id locals is so true! amazing how often that can be a dead giveaway. I like the look you're sporting in this one, the rather natty hat you're wearing is a real nice touch! 🎩🙌

    LOL! You got me. I actually had to look up natty. Well, thank you. I've had that hat somewhere on the order of 35 years, and if you look around you will see it show up in videos periodically over the last seven years. I love that hat. I will likely be buried with that hat. I got a lot of grief from locals in New England about my Midwest pronunciations when we were up there, and a lot of those were pretty unkind, and subsequently deleted. So I do understand how it happens. Thanks so much!

    Well, I do find it amusing, but only because I'm from here. It doesn't really bother me, since it is a French name, and well, I at least grew up learning to pronounce things with phonics. Which incidentally makes Spanish a lot easier than English. So glad you liked the scenery. It is a relatively peaceful place for being of such historic significance.

    Interesting reminds me of how San Francisco was built out of the oak and redwood trees that use to be all over the Marin headlands then floated across the bay and then after 1906 earthquake they floated lumber down the Petaluma river out to the bay and across to SF side. infect my family history comes from SF and I use to live in Petaluma but the first Dome on the SF city hall was built in Petaluma and floated by barge down the Petaluma river and across the bay

    Hi Paul, thanks for the tip about the pronunciation of Mackinac Island, I've been pronouncing it "maki-nac" all this time when it's actually "maki-naw" - I've always wanted to go there because it's where one of my favorite movies of all time was filmed "Somewhere in Time" - have you ever done a video from there?

  • @Realunitedstates

    @Realunitedstates

    Even, first, glad I could help with the pronunciation. Second, no we have not done video from Mackinac Island, yet, but several videos from just across the straits in Mackinaw City (spelled differently than the island) and St Ignace. However, as chance would have it, Beverly was working on the island at the time they were filming Somewhere in Time, and in fact met Christopher Reeve on one occasion. To this day Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini will make us stop, pause, and smile. I will leave it at that. LOL! Somewhere I believe we still have a full-size marquee poster for the movie. Perhaps one day we will go and film on the island. There are certainly several opportunities for videos, including the Fort and the home of Dr. Beaumont.
