    Fun fact about the Marspeople Mothership being “deep”: concept art for MS3 actually shows that the long hallway is the player going around the circumference of the ship (which is a couple of kilometers, i believe) and you’re gradually spiraling inward until you reach the next screen.

    The Rugname's(Marspeople mothership) height itself is actually only about 2 storey's high (12 meters) but it more than makes up for because of its wideness. Metal Slug 2's concept art shows the scale of it compared to the Daimanjis(The spherical ships that attach to the bottom of the Rugname) and they are TINY compared to the Rugname's girth.

    Secret hint about shitty looking water/rainbows. On digital output it looks shitty because it is flipping between the waterfall the rainbow quickly and each full frame is instantly shown all at once. Now if this was hooked up to a CRT, the scanlines will switch between the two frames but due to the nature of phosphors in CRT glowing for a bit by the time the game scanlines comes back around, it will draw the waterfall with the faded rainbow colors resulting in a constantly blending of the two images. this is also the reason sonic running on emulator has waterfalls that look like shit compared to how it looks on a CRT

    @@perteks7639 Here's an example of the effect I am talking about. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pWiFsaqeZMW1isY.html The first 4/5s of the video is showing emulator attempts with various shaders/filters to recreate the waterfall effect on a digital monitor. Some are very close, most are horrible with either Sonic or the Waterfall being most visible. The last fifth of the video shows what the game looks like going to a CRT. That is the effect I was talking about.

  • @HotClown

    @HotClown

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's not an accurate description of how this effect works or even the effect that's happening here (or in Sonic). The checkerboard dithering in the waterfall is simply for transparency, not a rainbow effect. It also works (to a lesser extent) on modern LCD TVs when the console is connected via composite. Composite is kind of inherently shitty and blurry, especially horizontally. The blurriness is increased on CRTs by the phosphor glow as the electron gun scans across the screen, but is still there on LCDs, because again, composite is shitty. The moment you switch to component, RGB over SCART, S-Video, or anything digital, the effect falls apart, even on a CRT, and especially on an LCD. Because of how blurry composite is, you can put checkerboard dithering on a sprite and the entire dithered region becomes a sort of gradient between the colours involved. You can use this to get partial transparency in a sprite, which is what's going on here. Sonic uses vertical transparent lines for its gradient transparency, which looks better on composite (checkerboarding would a little bit more obvious because composite is less blurry vertically) and far worse on RGB (now Sonic has vertical transparent lines through him). This is awesome in an era where transparency is basically limited to 1 bit, because now you can easily fake partial transparency. It also obviously works well for gradients, and on CRTs, producing colours that the console naturally can't as the phosphor glow causes colour "blending". The reason it's switching which pixels are transparent every frame is to create a sense of motion, but the transparency works without that. The rainbows happening in Sonic's transparent waterfalls happen even on LCDs over composite, because it's specifically the Genesis's composite output not entirely conforming to spec causing that, nothing to do with CRTs, or phosphor, or pseudo-partial-transparency. I know I'm gonna type (have typed) too much already, so I won't get into the Genesis's video output or subcarriers or anything like that. A huge number of older games use dithering for this exact reason, and some consoles straight up supported it in hardware. Soooo many PS1 games use the built-in hardware dithering heavily, and they look much sharper, but much shitter, as soon as you switch to RGB output. Some of the skyboxes in Gran Turismo 2 are totally fucked on anything but composite, regardless of the display. Ecco's title screen is a great example of composite+dithering being used to get blended gradients, and Streets of Rage uses big checkerboard yellow/transparent cones for partially transparent ceiling lights. I don't know that I can post links here, but google "the case for composite" and you'll get a blogspot post with great still examples of what I'm talking about, including the ones mentioned. Nothing mentioned here is a very fancy use of the technology of the time though, it was all very normal game dev stuff, though Sonic did at least kind of use the janky Genesis video output to its advantage in an interesting way. CRTs don't really work how you described- by the time the electron gun gets back around to any given point, that phosphor has mostly stopped glowing. That's why CRTs are mostly dim with one big fat glowing line when filmed. At any given time, most of the display is pretty dim, but human persistence of vision makes it not really matter. If they did work how you describe, they'd be terrible, especially at high refresh rates, and anyone who has played CS at 120Hz on a CRT so heavy that it causes their desk to bend knows that isn't the case. Thanks for coming to my TED talk yadda yadda

    It's really not even the sprites that get me in this game, and yes the sprites are fucking INCREDIBLE, but other games have sprite quality to this level. What sets Metal Slug apart is their animations. They animate things that no other game ever would take the time to animate like the POWs hanging are slightly rotating back and forth or the character idle shifting or some crazy hit reaction animations like the tank has a silly personified knock back animation when it's hit. It's so amazingly stylized, brilliant, and complex. I can tell the sprite artists on this team had a real passion.

    Metal Slug is one of those series where I swear I've experienced every individual part seperately in some way before even playing the game. Seeing the pixel art just because it's good, hearing the music just because that's good, hearing the "RAWKET LOWNCHER" and "HEAVY MACHINE GUN" just because they're funny voice clips. So actually playing it was amazing. Also because the game is just cool as hell. It's got that Metal Gear kind of over-the-top nonsense taken somewhat seriously. Yeah I'll save a half naked man who gives me a rocket launcher out of his spare underwear to shoot a railgun tank, why not? Also for the record, the TAS of Metal Slug 3 is absolutely phenomenal, highly recommend. I think it's done with 2 characters to optimize damage, and the amount of grenade spam and crazy perfect shots and throws is amazing. Plus because it's a tas there's perfect teamwork, one character clearing stragglers so the other with the beefy guns can save their ammo for the big enemies, it's so cool.

    Ah Metal Slug 3, SNK's swan song before filing bankruptcy. Here's some interesting bits about Mission 2's mid-boss (Monoeyes) and their ship, which is the boss of the stage. Yes! The Monoeyes are Marspeople just a different breed apparently and the way the Zombies are caused initially is through psychic emissions from the Monoeye's ship, then afterwards infection through bodily fluids start. About Mission 4. Mission 4 has the most amount of alternate pathways in the game. The mission takes place somewhere in Brazil apparently where our heroes are sent in to investigate a distress call from a hidden Rebel research lab inside an Aztec pyramid. The level's main threat are genetic experiments and bioweapons produced in the facility-hence the Man Eater plants and their spores. This was also where mutagenic research was transferred to when Dr. Moreau's Lab(Mission 1) was raided by our heroes. Hence you see giant crabs and flies in this level as well as other mutated wildlife if you go to the bottommost route on the level. Metal Slug being Metal Slug, of course, being built below an Aztec pyramid, it has mummies if you take the middle-top route. Going straight leads you into a Japanese camp. Division 6 of the Rebel Army, to be precise, they were told to guard those caves ever since the First Morden War(the first game) but since our heroes never went there for TWO games, the Rebel Army themselves forgot the existence of Division 6. Division 6 having lost contact with the rest of the army had to subsist by living off the land and notably having outdated tech, since they didn't even know the Rebel Army has lost 2 Wars by this point. Sol Dae Rokker(Mission 4 boss) is something kinda out of left field. Apparently it is revealed to be one the Marspeople's ancient weapons that crash landed on Brazil but was operable enough to have a god-like worship from the people in ancient times, Sol Dae Rokker has laid dormant for centuries until the Marspeople reactivate it to fight off the exiting Regular Army Commandos.

    Ok, THIS is the hardest nostalgia that I have ever felt, and that'll probably ring true for years to come. For those unaware (all of you), I have only played Metal Slug 3, but on a console that belonged to one of my cousins, who lives in a different continent that speaks a different language, a continent which I have only been on holiday to (to meet him and other family) 3 times, 2 times where I was capable of playing a game, the latter of which coincided with my 11th birthday. And yet, when grayfruit played MS3, I remembered the vast majority of bosses, enemies and setpieces that the game had. I have very few memories of what it was actually like to play with my cousin with the language barrier, but I could remember many details from the game with ease. I also really like how there isn't really a need for you to understand a certain language in these games too; aside from menuing, all of the story is shown visually, especially in the third one. Something that was kinda highlighted by this video is how over the top some of the shit in this game is, like the part in 3 where they throw a million tanks down on you in the water, or the machine that makes monoliths rain, or the blood lazar from the captured character; I guess I never really picked up on that when I was younger. All in all; this is a masterful series of games. Both eye and brain candy. I probably won't watch subsequent videos on this series until I play the games myself.

    Oof, I feel for you dude. I was convinced as a naive little boy that if I just searched enough, I would eventually be able to find a copy of Halo... for the game cube 😅 My friend had an xbox and I didn't, but I loved playing it over at his house, so I *needed* to find it! Eventually I got a 360 a bit after it came out, and I was perfectly happy with Halo 3 and eventually Reach then! Also, they made a version of CoD WaW for the Wii! Like not a pirated one, and the motion controls worked alright lol. But I found out the hard way that it didn't include Nazi Zombies 🤦‍♂️ (I still had a lot of fun with it, but once I eventually got a gaming PC I also bought the game on steam to play zombies with friends).

    Pro tip When in a vehicle crouch and then jump to dismount, when you do that you get a small moment of invincibility, you can jump back in before the invincibility runs out, you can use this to avoid taking damage in a vehicle and helps a lot in boss fights if you get good at it

Every bit of money I had I would exchange for machine tokens so I can play more ;D Much later on PSX I was playing a lot too, even to a point of doing 0 death runs on Metal Slug X. Good times, great to see someone play for the first time and being blown away with how solid the game is

    Fun Fact about Metal Slug 3: The male characters use handguns, while the females use revolvers. Depending on what gender of the character you play as, the ending will change. Of course, all four characters will throw their gun into the water with unique animations, but for females, it'll show their revolvers sinking instead of the males' handguns. Why and how do the females fire 200 rounds with revolvers? Don't ask me.

    7:24 the problem with some of those ports, including some of the metal slug games, if memory serves, is that they are either bad ports from mobile in specifically Chrono Trigger's case, or in Metal Slug's past, bad emulators that can barely function. MS's had it happen more than once if I remember.
