Saw this when I was in high school and because of Milla Jovovich (my all-time CRUSH) but when I watched it again, I realized the message of this film. It's not a hero film or Braveheart, but it's about faith and the border between sane and insanity. It's a Psychological rollercoaster and that's the reason why many people disliked this movie, because they were expecting a Braveheart ripoff but instead, you will question yourself if Joan and the other Saints were telling the truth or you know, they had some mental problems and seeing things. Besson is a freaking GENIUS.

I know People have different tastes and all, but nobody should expect something in a movie before watching it. You never know how it may be. And if you expected a ripoff, got deceived by YOUR OWN EXPECTATIONS and disliked it in return, i'm sorry, but you have the mental capacity of a toadstool. Sorry, i have nothing against you, but UUGH this is one type of people that makes my blood boil Have a beautiful day and i hope you still love that movie

Literally like all Besson films, truly an iconic and masterpiece of film. Milla Jovovich nailed the role as Joan of Arc, and what a saint Joan was, and what she had to endure. A true hero, who stood her ground to the best she could, had a message, and delivered it. Joan was human, and like all not perfect, but she was devoted, and had to endure injustice, but her loyality stood above all. Honestly what a film it was, such a perfect cast, soundtrack, and portrayal of the story and history of Joan of Arc.

The first time I watched this, I was just 4-5 years old and I don't understand many things. I kept telling mom that she should have run away with that guy that was played by Desmond Harrington since he was the most handsome looking man in the film. But when I grew up and I watched this again, I realized that having partner is actually the least thing I should think of about this movie. This is a sad true story of a young girl, she's brave, she's honest but then in the end, they accused her of being crazy and burned her. Now she's in heaven ^_^ Anyway, Milla Jovovich really nailed this one ^_^

What a trailer, and what a film. Another legendary, and masterpiece film by French Director Benson, which I'm really glad that it was done by him, as he's French, same with Milla Jovovich nailing the role as Joan of Arc, a film that changed me, and had a major impact on me, and really made me look into things more. Like what a saint & true hero Joan was, an inspiration as well, with all that she had to endure, suffer from as well as prove. Where no matter what, never backed out, and always stood her ground to the best she could even if things would end bad for her. A saint and hero who had a message sent by God, and delivered it with her loyalty to him standing above all. Like every human, we are all not perfect, but she was devoted even during the worse times and always confessed to her sins, endured injustice, especially betrayal, but always delivered from the word of God & always remained loyal to him and with that her loyalty stood above all. What a film it was, a film that made her my inspiration, adore her, thank her for everything, and always makes me feel bad for all that she had to endure. A film that I felt through heart & emotion for her. A film with such a perfect cast, soundtrack, and portrayal of the story and history of Joan of Arc. A film that everyday, I always thank Joan, ask as well as pray to her to help me every day. A saint with such an impact, story, and inspiration.

The one thing that bothers me about this movie is that she is not depicted as a powerful person. She is only painted as a saint, as a holy woman but she is not actually represented with her wit or her courage. She is a very good character but I don't think it's what I would expect from Joanne of Arc.

Historians have debunked this film's portrayal of numerous issues, since it's mostly bunk from beginning to end. The "Joan of Arc" character in the film bears little resemblance to the actual woman: e.g. at her trial she said bluntly that she never fought, but instead carried her banner in battle and stayed out of the fighting, and many eyewitness accounts described her as quiet, composed, and "beautiful and shapely" - nothing similar to the shrill, twitchy, butch stereotype in the film (no, that modern hairstyle is not what her hair looked like). Many historians and doctors have rejected the idea that she suffered from schizophrenia or other forms of mental illness, as the movie implies. Her sister Catherine was never killed by English troops, in fact there weren't any English raids on Joan's home village (only Burgundian raids which didn't kill anyone), and Joan mentioned that she was hoping to go back home and see Catherine in 1429, so Catherine was still alive then. The battle scenes in the movie are exciting but often absurd (Joan punches out an armored English soldier, propellers whack people's heads off, some soldiers wear spiked armor, etc) and Joan's visions bear no resemblance whatsoever to how she described them in her testimony. The scriptwriter said that he wrote the entire thing as an anti-war film based on his personal view that God never supports even defensive warfare. That's his personal theology, and has certainly nothing in common with Joan's own theology or anything to do with history.

Mmm everything right but the hairstyle is the only right thing, the color is wrong, the hair was black. That was the most fashion hairstyle for men of that period, and not the bob. Look at the king and the soldiers. It's considered fashion now, but 10 years ago.. horrible for men 😂 The bob was used in paintings for gave her a feminine appearence because in the past a woman who looked like a man was not completely accepted. This hairstyle is in many paintings. The soldier's hair were really short because they're comfortable in battles.

@@patriziasforza8484 Yes, her hair was black, but the style was not the modern type shown in the film, and it wouldn't have been the shaved "pudding basin" medieval style either (she couldn't have shaved it, especially while in prison with no means to cut it). It must have been a very rough-cut style, and must have grown out considerably while she was in prison for 13 months with nothing to cut it (unless the tribunal was cutting it and then blaming her for it).

@@RayB1656 She said bluntly that she never fought, instead carrying her banner; and the eyewitnesses said the same thing. As for St. Catherine and St. Margaret: we don't even know which Catherine or Margaret she was referring to, so you can't say they never existed (and the attempts to de-authenticate two of the saints with those names are disputed at best and nonsense at worst).

The late Hank Reinhardt, co-founder of Atlanta Cutlery, said he walked out of this movie about 1/3 of the way through-- then heard from a friend who stayed through the damn thing more than one heckler was shouting at the screen.... "BURN THE WITCH!" ...long before Jojovovich (cannot dignify her with the Maid's name) was captured. Seriously, Luc Bresson made a deliberate agitprop slanderous hatchet job. Just about each and every place and fact about Joan who could get wrong, or twist beyond all recognition, he could and did. While lacking MRI brain scans, the Medievals knew about mental illness. They knew you do NOT place thoroughly unpleasant, illiterate, utterly no military experience 17 YEAR OLD peasant girls in command of a royal army EVEN IF they claim to be getting messages from the Saints. Then, as now, they knew a nutter within one minute of meeting one. If Joan had been anything like this travesty, she would have been bound, gagged, and sent home to Domremy for her parents to take care of her. While she had a will of iron, Joan was always lucid, she was only truly angry when foul, let alone blasphemous, speech was said in her hearing. She took actual command, inspired her men-- including nobles and aristocrats--lead from the front, and out thought and argued two months of University trained theologians set against her. I look for the day when we get a movie made from a novel written by Joan's biggest fan, Samuel Longhorn Clemons, aka Mark Twain. Clemons, an atheist, an anti Catholic, and not liking the French very much either, wrote his dearest to his own heart book about a devout French Catholic girl who was also a warrior of God.
