I think our upward inflection is a mix of friendliness, wanting to include the other person in the conversation, and seeking their approval. It's endearing, but can get a bit monotonous if someone uses it too much.

@@candicemoll8386 It means mono-pitch (one frequency only) which is why the rising inflection by definition cannot be monotonous. But it can get repetitive. No speech is entirely a mono-tone, but as the tendency increases, the speaker becomes more tiring to listen to. Constant pitch modulation is the name of the game. If you want an example of someone moving toward monotony, you can't do better than Kym Gyngell, in his characterisation of Col'n Carpenter. The fewer times when he does depart from the flattish pitch adds to the emphasis and thus the comedy.

Re Aussie politeness, we also say things like "give us a look" even though you're the only other person present and should be more like "give me a look". I think this is because it sounds more like an invitation to share with 'everyone', rather than an instruction.

English is not my first language, but I'm learning it since kindergarden. And it was so strange, since we were learning words in british, but talking in american (flat, lift etc.). So I had kind of mixed accent. But when I first time heard australian (H2O: just add water) I wanted to learn it. Plus, I really want to live and work in Australia as an actress. But I sound soo stupid talking aussie, it sounds like I'm mixing brit and american.😳

Do they still do that? I want go back to my roots and learn the correct accent. I am very proud of my Australian heritage. We go back about 8 generations mostly in the Queensland area.. 4:03 That video... Thats legit the video I have already been using lol. Cuz Im trying to get sort of an accidental australian accent. Cuz at one point I was watching grian’s hermitcraft videos literally 24/7 for a couple days trying to catch up, and I sort of started sounding like grian, whom is brittish. It took awhile for that to wear off. Literally months. So now Im going to see if I can get that to happen again, only with the australian accent and hear australians speaking. And that video is legit perfect to try this with, as the dude speaking has a very strong australian accent. I watched it 2 or 3 times and it was already effecting my speech.

I think it's difficult for anyone to hear their own accent done badly. BUT! Don't let that discourage you. You have to be bad at an accent before you become 'good' at it. Anyone who can perform different accents perfectly, were 'bad' at it for a time. So practice as much as you can and use it anytime you like! Anyone who has a problem with it can go jump in the lake. And you can tell them that I said so! 😘

The "Question inflection" is a minority accent from one or 2 suburbs in Sydney. In 1988. And is largely an obtuse overly used urban myth that came out of Channel 9? comedy farce. (Only a handful of Sydney female children EVER used this "accent" .. decades ago. Leave it be!
