The Melodic Minor Scale: Functional Applications (Melodic Minor, Lydian Dominant and Altered)

Музыка

Continuing from last week's video, here are some useful applications for Melodic Minor that will work in a wide variety of scenarios! Have fun practicing!
P.S. - I mention that F Melodic Minor shares almost every note with C major, in terms of common tones for the IV- reference. Please note that while true for the most part, you still have Bb (not just Ab) is also present. So manage your phrasing/melodic ideas accordingly. Excuse any odd mistakes, as I usually just go off-the-cuff with these lessons!

This lesson was very useful. Thanks for sharing it. A very concise video with a lot of information and practice material. I really liked how you explained in which chord context the scale can be used.

Great lesson, i really connected with thinking of the parent scale to give more freedom over the fretboard. This isnt talked about much with modes but it totally helps me to think that way.

Thank you so much for this nice video ! I have some newbies questions... : - would you play Lydian dominant on a V resolving to a I (or only on backdoor, IV7, tritone sub) ? - would you play altered scale on a V7 or only on a V7(alt) ? I obviously tried on V7 but it seems to me a bit odd. - would you play altered scale on backdoor, IV7, tritone sub ? Have a nice day ! 🙂

Hi there! Glad you enjoyed the video. I'll just briefly answer as best as I can through a message. 1) Lydian b7 (Lydian Dominant) will usually only apply to the backdoor, IV7 and tritone subs. If you want a Melodic Minor sound on a V that isn't altered, try Mixolydian b13 2) You can, and this is usually a great example of having to develop hearing tensions against a chord that doesn't contain them. It's a very common device! Playing it against the V7(alt) will give you more context, whereas it will sound much more explicit and "out" over a run-of-the-mill V7. At the end of the day, it's a V chord. 3) Generally no. In my experience, it leads to some awkward voice-leading. Hope this helps provide some additional context!

@@JuanDhas Thank you a lot that's very helpfull ! By the way, your 2 videos on superimposition are awsome too. I don't saw too much about mixo b13, it seems less "in the light" than alterd and dom#11 but that b13 sound awsome... 🔥 About Lydian b7 : - Is the fact that it doesn't works with the V a voiceleading problem ? (same type of problem than the altered on a triton sub ?) - I thought I read somewere that it was refered as "the modern" jazz sound. Is that correct ? (-> Altered was already used in the 30s ?)

@@homermao Of course! It's an interesting question. The standard application for Lydian b7 is usually non-functional dominant chords (meaning dominant chords that don't resolve via a 5th). My best guess would be that the V chord is diatonic, and as a result certain other scales take "priority" as they preserve the original function within the key. Personally, I think Lydian b7 on V pulls a little too far away from your home key. At the end of the day, this is all the "standard practice" stuff that worked its way into the language of the style. If the harmony is non-functional, have at it and freely experiment!

Kiesel HH2 for the guitar. As far as an amp goes, I was using a logic amp sim here as I didn't have my cab with me at the time.

Practice learning the common applications (including finding real-life examples), as well as scale exercises based around intervals. The more time you spend with the scale, the more you will internalise the sound over time. Hope this helps!

Just a simple and dumb question eheh. On the example you play at 10:10 you're actually playing Ab melodic minor and not F mm right? Great channel tho!!

Yep, playing Ab melodic minor. Was referring to Lydian b7 off of Db (matches with the Db7 chord in the example there). Thanks for the support, and hope you've enjoyed some of the other content on here!
