But crybaby wanted to become her mother’s stronger version and play with guys while making ‘industry girls’ insecure. Like your beauty is not enough to fight with me i will get your man with my personality. But then industry girl showed some skin and get the boy back. Melanie wanted to become her in mrs potato head. Its like she was trying to find who should i be ? My moms better version or the reason why my mom cheated. I don’t think she did those on propose. I guess it was the traumas making her did those.

She didn't kill him in soap. It's a metaphor. "Should have never said the word love. Thew a toaster in the bathtub" She felt like she ruined the relationship by saying she loved him, the toaster in the bathtub wasn't killing him, it was killing the relationship.

fun fact : in the beginning of pity party mv, you can see cry baby wrote down "Jhonny" on the letter. (Jhonny was the boy in soap n training wheels mv)

btw this album isn’t about anyone melanie created the character cry baby and created the story,she then turned it in the songs she’s just amazing

There’s a deluxe for cry baby with 3 extra tracks “play date, teddy bear, and cake”

idk if anyone has pointed this out yet, but the line “your favorite candy’s cotton, that’s why all your teeth are rotten” refers to the cotton ball diet. it’s basically an eating disorder where people dip cotton balls in juice or smoothies and swallow them so they feel full without eating. eating disorders also make your teeth very fragile and weak, hence why she says your teeth are rotten. it’s also why she says there’s “weights in your pockets” because being that light after eating nothing but cotton balls (which can obstruct your intestines) would raise quite a few red flags. sorry for the essay, just thought it was a cool detail.

My interpretation is that soap was all in her mind and that in training wheels she helps him grow but he leaves her. And she didn't die. In the end of the video, she is seen awake but the angel represents her innocence being taken away

I really enjoy your reactions, especially that you rarely talk through videos - I’ve seen so many people react to Melanie and they talk over it constantly because they’re excited, but they miss really important parts of it. Your K-12 reaction is gonna fire, I'm so excited. But I was in the same camp as you where I didn't really want to watch it, I just wanted to listen. What I ended up doing was listening to a couple "staple" songs like "Drama Club" and "Show & Tell" just through my headphones first, and then gave myself about an hour and a half one night to sit and watch the film to see where and how they fit into the initial Crybaby narrative. Your observations about the characters with the blacked out eyes is almost dead on especially within the context of K-12 continuation. Subscribing, I love the way you break things down and really take the time to give each track your attention.

Melanie also has a film that’s linked with album “K-12” and she recently released her EP called “after school” you should react to them

Melanie Martinez's music honestly makes my skin crawl. I don't mean to minimize any childhood trauma that she may have experienced; we all have had some amount of childhood trauma, and to say Melanie didn't have any is ridiculous. But she has said in interviews that she had a "very pleasant childhood with loving parents." And I don't mean to imply that you can't tell a story about trauma without having experienced that trauma firsthand. That would also be ridiculous. But the character she produces has such a shallow, impersonal, and vapid relationship with the supposed traumas that she is experiencing. She didn't experience the trauma herself, which again is not the issue, but she doesn't paint of a believable picture of someone that did. She makes the most unsubtle characachure of it. Take Dollhouse, for example, a song on the album that I find to be relatively less objectionable. It could have been a pretty cool peek behind the curtain, going through her parents and brother one by one and showing what everyone else sees vs. what she sees at home. The verse about the mom is what the entire song could be like. But no, instead we got "Mom, please wake up. Dad's with a slu- and your son's smoking cannibis." Okay, not the direction I would have gone, but there's still the potential for a good song there. She could have gone the route of showing that now that she's growing up, she's being pressured to put her doll's clothes on herself and sit on display. Or anything really at all about how living in a dollhouse is affecting her personally. Instead, all we get is a vague "One day they'll see what goes down in the kitchen," and a chorus that gets repeated one too many times. And that's what a lot of the album is. Detached. Impersonal. The songs that are more grounded in Melanie's personal life experience are allowed to shine more, and she could do more of that. But the ones where it is all character and no personality are the weakest. And Dollhouse is one of the better tracks. Then you have songs like Tag, You're It and Milk and Cookies, which are an awful take on kidnapping and abuse. If you're gonna write a song about that, you need to get the tone right. It almost has to be grounded and serious. Not hypnotic, playful, almost sexual at times. And because of how badly she characterizes trauma, the album doesn't come across as her character experiencing trauma, but _glamorizing_ it. It feels like cosplay. As soneone who was victimized as a child, I absolutely dispise the approach and the execution. To be honest, the fact that she can even write a song like Dollhouse is baffling to me. This entire album and K-12 is her dressing up her trauma dolls, and she fails to see the irony of it. Edit: I wanted to bring up an example of a song with a premise like Tag, You're It that I think is done well: I'm Sorry by Flyleaf. It's a different genre, but it is mature, serious, and evokes a visceral reaction in me whenever I hear it.

Watched the whole video, AMAZING as usual 😌 And the next album is a continuation of the story of “Crybaby” and the lyrics, sound, have matured A LOT, k-12 is basically calling out a lot of issues in our society, her voice has slightly changed and matured as well I don’t really know if you would like it as for most people it’s a hit or miss, but it is really beautiful and if you can, watch the movie on your own time cause it’s crazy how Melanie wrote, directed, designed the movie.
