    According to Krikzz's changelog there's been a bunch of updates since this review. It's now in V4.04 and for example multi bin support for CD games was added in 4.01. My own cartridge is in the mail at the moment, upgraded after good experiences with the budget model X3.

    Man... So many little disappointing bugs. It sounds like Krikzz rushed this one a bit. Seems like it needed a bit more time in the oven before release. This is most definitely not quite up to Krikzz's usual quality standards. Kind of a shame. Hope these issues get fixed soon!

  • @dacypher22

    @dacypher22

    4 жыл бұрын

    It is and I hope they are fixed soon as well. But I also do hugely respect what they are doing here and how much more difficult this is than just making an Everdrive-type device to run ROMs on the system they were designed for. A lot of the Sega CD was just using the power of the Genesis but there were quite a few custom chips as well and to handle those through FPGA? Well, that is complex.

    I seem to remember most of these products (both Krikzz and Terraonion) launching with hardware/software issues. It's hard for such a small team of people to test *every* scenario. It usually has to go out to the public before most things get ironed out. I remember getting my SuperSDSystem from Terraonion only for them to have to recall them since one of the capacitors were installed backwards.

  • @skins4thewin

    @skins4thewin

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@SmaMan Well yeah, some very small issues usually with the Krikzz Everdrives. They've never had issues to this extent though. And the Super SD is a whole different can of worms as that thing was supremely flawed from the getgo. The video circuit was a complete mess, and those in the community even tried to help them fix it, but they copped an attitude and tried bashing the community that tried to help them. Ever since then TerraOnion has kind of had a bad rap with me personally, but I did still give them the benefit of the doubt and bought the Mega SD which is a quality product. The Super SD 3 is still flawed tho even today, they still haven't fixed all of the video circuit issues and they refuse to do so which is why I refuse to buy one.

  • @skins4thewin

    @skins4thewin

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@bigwut123 No, not at all. I mean yeah they did a revision that fixed some of the issues, but some issues still remain, and they refused to do a 2nd revision. In fact Voultar still sells a RGB bypass mod for it that many ppl like to do. I'd recommend doing the mod to yours if you know how to solder. The remaining issues may be considered minor to some, but they are indeed present. For me I just refuse to buy one as I am not going to pay for a device that needs modwork to function properly when the thing already costs nearly 300 bucks. I don't like that you need to mod it to get a proper RGB signal out of it. Mistakes were clearly made, and they just plain didn't know how to design a proper RGB circuit. Voultar tried to help them and they copped an attitude. Not very smart on their part. Besides, I already have a nice working PC Engine Duo-R with an RGB mod, so I don't really need one of these anyway.

    It's nice that people have another option since many people just don't want to mess with Terraonion, but i think this new one from Krikzz could maybe use a bit more time baking in the oven so to speak. When you are already spending $200 on a product, going up another $60 doesn't seem like a big deal to get everything you want and working in good order. The file format stuff alone on the Mega Everdrive Pro would be an annoyance. With MegaSD also being available at StoneAgeGamer so you don't have to ship in from overseas, it seems like the best option still. Hopefully Krikzz can fix some things up in time for the holidays.

    Don't think that file format shall become an issue. I am used to gluing CD images for POPStarter. Krikzz option is better for me as he has a shady online shop here in Ukraine. Delivered within couple of days with only 1-2$ for postage. Though I would invest in SNES cart now, as my cheapo Everdrive X3 is pretty sufficient for my sporadic SEGA gaming.

    Just Wow , once the standard everdrive was released, i could,ve only hope that people would mode existing mega cd games in a compremised form to run trough that old everdrive, (by deviding those nega cd roms into sections of 4MB aka clusterchain format, while the CD audio could,ve bern mixed and converted to just 8bit pcm), sure having a mega everdrive save all the all such impractical needs for such hurdle, but still it would,ve been cool anyway and i still see lots of untapped potential in them.

Kkkkzzzzr is sure to top it soon, as he is king of the flash carts." But I am surprised at how much better the SD seems than the ED Pro. I don't want my Genesis to play NES games with wierd colors and sounds or not at all. Just no thanks. I have an NES. It seems wierd to me that he would bother with that when there are already enough issues to work out with the Sega consoles. It's obnoxious that I would have to look for a specific repack of an image file, rather than just use any type. And why is the audio so much better on the SD? FM channel works and everything... I love my Everdrive MD. But it looks like I might upgrade to the SD over the Pro...

    Thanks for taking a look at these! The idea of playing Sega CD games on a Genesis without a Sega CD is very appealing to me. Sega CDs are a pain in the ass to keep running these days and that is in stark contrast to the nearly bullet-proof core Genesis system.

    @@NoshAbroad haha ya, i do want to get one with sega cd support because i had a power surge in my house and it burnt out part of the mobo where i had bypassed the fuse that is known to be faulty on the model 2s. Luckily i had another model 2 that had damage to the cd reading daughterboard so i swapped out mobos and it works but now i am all hella sketch that something might happen to this one so i keep it unplugged till i want to use it.

    @@tuffasgong About 25 years ago when i was in HS my friend's home caught fire and burned down as a result of a Sega PSU being left plugged in while not in use. There was a very lengthy lawsuit and in the end Sega had to pay for the damages. However, later revisions of the Genesis manual say to unplug the Genesis after use as a result of the lawsuit.

    Krikzz only manufactures them. It was designed by ikari_01 and the firmware is mostly his as well, with some contributions for special chip firmwares from redguy (SuperFX & SA-1), magno (S-DD1) and redacted173 (Super Game Boy 2).

    Thank you for an unbiased review. Key notes for me personally. The bootup times ARE better with the Pro, and the cartridge is compact and natural. Though the Mega SD has game menu support with MCD games. And better cheat support for Pro-Action Replay.

    I get a much bigger kick out of collecting and playing the actual carts/discs, so these devices are not really for me. They do have some really cool features though & I totally understand how people would find them way more convenient. Thanks for another entertaining episode.

    I'm pretty satisfied with the performance of my Mega SD, I have it coupled with the Mega SG and it's about as good as it gets. I wouldn't get too excited about the NES core on the MEP, MadLittlePixel showcased it on his channel live and it was very buggy, many games had bad glitches or wouldn't run at all. Hopefully some of the kinks with the MEP get worked out because it looks like a promising product, but as of now i'd give the edge to the MSD, even with it being a pricey device it gives you outstanding performance and options.
