The Mayfield Backpack Pattern - from Knotted Threads Co.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a companion tutorial to the Mayfield Backpack PDF sewing pattern.
The pattern is available for purchase on my website: knottedthreadsco.com/ or Etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/KnottedThre...
This is an intermediate-advanced sewing pattern, and it is recommended for semi-industrial/industrial machines.
I am sewing on a Juki 1541 industrial, with some parts being sewn on a Juki HZL-DX7. I'm using Tex70 thread throughout.
Materials used:
- Mora vinyl from emmalinebags.com/
-Themed hardware from thumbsnthimbles.myshopify.com/
-Cotton woven fabric from Zombie Bunny Fabric zombiebunnyfabrics.com/
-Woven interfacing from Sew Dulce Hardware & More sew-dulce.myshopify.com/
-Cork labels are my own design from Warehouse Industries (found on Etsy)
-Waterproof canvas from www.fabricwholesaledirect.com/
Other hardware and supplies needed have been purchased wholesale/from large retailers.

Beautiful bag and beautiful job. I love seeing bag makers create such sleek professional bags. One small suggestion. It would be nice to see a walkthrough of the bag and its pockets/zips/compartments at the beginning of the video.

Thank you so much! If you're speaking about the magnet, it would be best to follow Thumbs & Thimbles for those updates as that is not my company - I'm just a supporter and customer :)

Beautiful bag. You have inspired me to make it with your amazing video. I was wondering where to purchase the cord ends. And did you use biggish strap sliders?

  • @knottedthreadsco

Thank you so much! You want to stick with narrow sliders as most webbing is going to be skinny enough to slide too much with wide ones. The cord ends can be found in many places. Look for zipper ends as that's what these were intended as but can also be used for this purpose ☺️

what brand of foam did you use for this bag?

  • @pascalecanuel2915

I have Janome HD9 (semi-industrial) but I'm little bit stressed with all layers at the back panel. Can we add the foam after adding straps and strap anchor?

  • @knottedthreadsco

You can certainly give that a try, but I have not personally done that to speak to the final results. I would suggest waiting to add those rivets until after you've fused the foam to further secure it.

Thought I'd chime in. I also have an HD9 (as well as an industrial) and in my experience the machine struggles with thicknesses like that. I end up with skipped stitches and inconsistent stitches. I found thinner foam at my local sewing shop which definitely helps. I now use that for all my bag sewing. I believe you can get it on Amazon. Hope this helps! 🙂 Edited: using a larger needle also helps. Size 16-18.

What type of pressure foot are you using for the top stitch on the top edge ?

  • @knottedthreadsco

On my industrial I'm using the standard foot it comes with. On my domestic I'm using a 1/4" piecing foot I believe it's called.

These were from Thumbs & Thimbles, but that shop is temporarily closed. If you are on Facebook, there are businesses that run limited edition fandom based fabric and hardware for bags. I'd join the group "Sew Whatever" and do a couple searches in that group for links to various businesses.
