The Math Behind A Crochet Circle & Why It Matters

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The math behind a crochet circle is the secret to getting perfect circles that lay flat! I had so much fun making this video and geeking out about the intersection of math and crochet (see what I did there?). Even if you're not interested in the technicalities of the mathematics, I've included key takeaways so you can improve your circles through the power of math - whether you understand the math or not. ;)
Also, today marks the 7 year anniversary of my KZread channel! Thank you all for the love and support over the years. I'm blessed to have such a wonderful community of crafters. I really enjoy sharing my hobbies with y'all, and your comments always brighten my day. Much love to you all. 💚

    Lisa, I hope you know your comments always make me smile! The funny thing is, going through the math logic for this video explained why my amigurumis sometimes turn out a little goofy. Not sure why I never thought to use math to troubleshoot this before. Us math people can be some of the smartest dumb people out there 🤣 Or maybe dumbest smart people? I'm not sure. Either way, thanks so much for the comment, and know that I treasure your prayers! (and decades of being with the same person is major #goals!!! Congrats!)

    What about if I need 7 petals coming out of my circle?

  • @CraftersAutonomous

    @CraftersAutonomous

    2 ай бұрын

    Great question! I'm actually wanting to make a follow up video on this exact scenario. The short version is: it's possible to work with a different number of stitches per round IF you can get the ratio between the height and width of the stitch to work out. Going with a smaller stitch makes the stitches narrower. Using a larger hook makes the stitches wider. So if we normally use 6 stitches per round and we go up to 7 stitches per round, we need each of our stitches to be narrower. Thus, if we are using more than 6 sc, we want to go down to a smaller hook to make each stitch a little narrower. The reason for sticking with 6 stitches is because it's soooo much easier to troubleshoot the math. In that scenario, just make sure your stitches are roughly squares. When we go to a different number, it's harder to troubleshoot because the ratio between width and height is harder to calculate. One other note: if you start with 7 stitches and were working just single crochet, you would increase each round by 7 stitches. If I put together a video on this topic, I'll cover the math behind why this is. Of course, if you are working petals, the following round are likely different types of stitches. In which case it can be harder to get the hook size right so things don't curl or ruffle. But at the end of the day, it is possible if you have patience and don't mind frogging and adjusting hook size until things lay flat!

    I just found your channel, so I'm not sure if You've made a video including this.... But i would love to know how to accommodate a bigger booty or breasts into clothes. I can only imagine a skirt, for example, would come up way too high on the backside of done like the front and then hips are usually wider as well. Also which yarns are best for which kind of projects. I'm particularly looking for something that has give/forgiveness but bounces back and doesn't lose it's shape.

    Great question! I have a playlist about crochet wearables - kzread.info/head/PL4vtl2v9reIHuYnWw-q-uGmSwkMiTH67j I don't have a video about crocheting a skirt/pants (yet... that might happen one day). But I do have some videos about crocheting tops. Specific ones to check out include: How to Crochet a Tank Top That Fits Your Body - kzread.info/dash/bejne/dI6t3KisY8_RnNY.html ^this covers a general strategy with instructions and tips for sizing and making it fit your body. Within that, there's a general approach for sizing to fit a larger bust. How to Crochet a Tunisian Crochet Tank Top - kzread.info/dash/bejne/aWesr9B_idTOctY.html ^this is a tutorial using Tunisian crochet, but it shows a general strategy of how to use an article of clothing you already own as a guide for crocheting your top. Ugly Christmas Sweater CAL, part 1 - kzread.info/dash/bejne/m5pl2ruEaaiol7Q.htmlsi=xdRH0Ll_aq4IPeh0 ^this crochet along shows a different approach for making a sweater garment. I don't remember how much this goes into to adjusting for the bust. But there might be some helpful nuggets you can glean from the 4 parts of the CAL (each video should link to the next part, but if not they're all in the Crochet Wearables Playlist). Hope these help!

    Other people: what type of music do you like? me: I don't really like music. Other people: you don't like any - there are lots of different types. me: I like math. Other people: ugh, I don't like math. me: you don't like any - there are lots of different types. 😂 I, too, love both math and crochet. But, as an engineer, I request that you stop using dots for multiply and instead use parentheses - the elimination of dots for multiply and filling the world with amigurumi are my two goals in life! 😝

    Hahaha I love that argument! I have found my people 😂 On the notation- I was trying to keep it as easy to understand as possible, and initially was going to use the multiplication x. But when I typed it out, it didn't look like multiplication and just looked like another letter thrown in. Personally, I absolutely would've used parentheses if I were doing some scratch work on my own, but I felt like the multiplication dots were a little more accessible/understandable to the less-mathematically-inclined general public. But parentheses are absolutely where it's at! (And I'm loving this opportunity to debate/discuss math notation 🤣) I wish you great success in your life goals! 😁

    @@CraftersAutonomous Crochet and math - such obvious bedfellows. Ratios and conic sections are so necessary for both. Aaah yes, the "less-mathematically-inclined". I saw a stat recently that half the adult population doesn't understand that 1/4 is less than 1/3...and the other half just can't believe that anyone doesn't know that (let alone half).😳 I think part of my loathing of dot for multiply comes from spending some of my school years in England where they don't ever use it. When you get to algebra and can no longer use "x" for multiply, you jump straight to parentheses (always called brackets there as they don't use the word parentheses, at all). The other part comes from teaching engineering at a university where my students would write stuff like 6.r.12.84.3.56.v - aaaarrrrgghhhh 😡

    That reminds me of a headline I saw that I sincerely hope was just a joke. It said "2/5 of Americans don't like math, a majority of the population" 🤣😭 That's really interesting about the different notation practices in England! If they call parentheses brackets, what do they call brackets? I'm used to (parentheses), [brackets], and {braces}. And each are used in specific cases. Hahahah that would drive me crazy trying to interpret "is this for multiplication or a decimal???"

  • @thejkennedy

    @thejkennedy

    @@CraftersAutonomous Yeah, 2/5 a majority - I hope that's a joke, but 🤔 In England (at least when I grew up and the school I went to) the teachers were consistent with: ( ) - brackets [ ] - Square brackets { } - curly brackets "Braces" are only for holding up your trousers ("suspenders" in American). Of course, "suspenders" in England are for holding up socks or stockings ("garters" or "garter belts" in American) while "garters" also hold up socks or stockings but only by putting a band around the top of them (like a mini belt), not by holding them from above. Moving to the US has been an adjustment. 😅

  • @CraftersAutonomous

    @CraftersAutonomous

    I almost like calling them all brackets better! Keeps the terminology a little more consistent. But yessss the US really likes to reuse the same words but give them totally different meanings 🤣 As an American, it's always funny when I'm confused by online articles until I realize it's written from a UK perspective. Suddenly it all makes sense as my brain "translates" the terms into the US equivalent!
